Why we shouldn't be focusing only on one network

Hey everyone,

First, I must say it's my opinion and if you agree or disagree is completely up to you.

Second, don't get me wrong - I think IMDbTV is a great network, but I think we should also focus on Netflix. Focusing solely on one network is a mistake (in my opinion) and that's why:

As long as we show our love for the show to more networks we have a bigger chance it'll be picked up by one of them. As I see it, IMDbTV and Netflix are our best options. Now you might say "we request on Netflix daily so what more can we do?" a few more things actually.

Streaming MacGyver on IMDbTV is the best way (and a great one!) to show our love and support for the show. We definitely should keep doing this. But since we can't stream the show on Netflix, the best way to let them know we're here is to make noise. While requesting can definitely help, I think it's not enough. I believe we should send postcards and paperclips to Netflix to let them know we're still very much here (IMDbTV clearly gets that message).

Why Netflix is still a possibility to #SaveMacGyver?

They said no to saving a few cancelled shows (such as Prodigal Son) but they never said no to us. Actually, they have no problem rejecting campaigns, so if they wouldn't be interested in MacGyver they would've said so by now.

At the beginning of the campaign one of the fans called Netflix (I prefer to keep her name anonymous) and the representative told her they can't take actions until the lawsuit is over or dismissed. It might be a lie, but since it came from a Netflix representative and not from the fan, it's worth mentioning. Any way, any network can't save the show as long as the lawsuit is still on, so while we're waiting for that to happen, we might as well keep making noise to as much networks as we can.

Netflix is an international netweork (as opposed to IMDbTV, sadly). They might be interested in the show because fans from 81 countries are interested in saving it. As the one checking (regularly) the audience demand for MacGyver around the world, I can say the demand is above average in many counties. The latest reports are on my Twitter account (if you're interested - @MRpaperclip).

A few days ago it was announced by Netflix their former cancelled show Manifest would be back for one more season. It's a great example they listen to fans if they're interested enough in saving the show. Of course Manifest was already on Netflix so the fans had no problem to stream it (as I said, streaming a show is one of the best ways to track attention to any campaign), but since it's not the case with MacGyver we should make noise differently.

Netflix saved shows before. The most famous example is of course Lucifer and they did wonders to the show. Now Lucifer is well known around the world and has five seasons (the sixth is out in a few months). MacGyver is not different in genre so it's still a possibility.

So that's it. I think we should focus a little bit more on Netflix (by sending them postcards and paperclips) because it's clearly an option. Even if you don't agree with me (which is perfectly understandable and valid) please keep streaming on IMDbTV and requesting on Netflix.

these are my words, ones that have been rattling in my head all day, and maybe, even for a long time. this is about the accounts that haven stolen my edits, edits from other fans and have been rude towards people who have called them out. who have continued to steal with no respect to content creators.

this isn’t just because of one stand-alone event. but recently one account has sparked such frustration. “_macgyver.forever_” on instagram has stolen parts of my riley davis “bad chick” video which has been posted on my youtube channel - “lostinwonderland” - since 2019. and also a macriley photo edit posted to my instagram - “twistedsteel_sexappeal” - years ago. they have also stolen other fans video/photo edits. they have recently deleted all comments. they have acted in an ignorant, arrogant, rude, insulting, childish manner when told they have stolen the edits. they refuse to delete, and continued to steal.

over the years since i joined the macgyver fandom i have tried to be nice towards accounts who have stolen my edits. it hasn’t happened just once, or twice, or three times - it’s been a constant battle. an exhausting anxiety that arises every time i post a new edit. i’ve had video/photo edits, GIFs and even some fics stolen. come across other accounts re-posting without giving credit while others assume they made them. while they also get praise, comments and likes on their stolen edit. too many accounts have little regard towards content creators. to many times i have messaged these type of accounts to ask for them to delete or add my credit, and too many times i have been made to feel shitty and like i had no right to be upset.

i have reached a point where i am beyond frustrated, that it’s even become a mindset of “giving up”. i have considered, countless of times, to delete everything - every post, edit, video, fic. i battle with that thought even more now as it seems this account “_macgyver.forever_” has no intention of deleting. i am completely done with the sheer amount of battles content creators within this fandom (and any other) have to endure.

honestly, i don’t think enough people realize just how much content creators put in. how, without them, fandoms wouldn’t be the colourful place they are. they wouldn’t have all these beautiful edits to enjoy - for free. the tags would be dry, lifeless and not as enjoyable. content creators put in time and huge amounts of hard work, and this is what they have to constantly deal with?. they don’t ask for much other than an like, reblog, share, comment and five seconds to be appreciated. and they certainly don’t ask for other fans to steal their edits all because those fans are lazy, disrespectful and unwilling to learn how to create their own edits.

it has been said over and over if you struggle with creating an edit, ask for help. if you struggle with getting clips or photos to use (ones that haven’t been edited by anybody else), ask another account to help. if you don’t know where to get an app or how to use one, ask another content creator for tips or advice. yes, the first few edits will probably be not as you imagined. they won’t be masterpieces, and they may not even get many likes or comments. but you learn with each edit made. it’s literally trial and error. you keep going. you build up your skill each time you edit. what you never do is steal another content creators work.

sadly, i know these accounts will get away with it. people will forget what they did. they’ll continue to get followers and others will continue to think they made those stolen edits (even if they have someone else’s watermark). those accounts will steal again and it’ll quickly become a vicious cycle. many will forget a day later, and many probably don’t care. and i know i’m only one content creator in a sea of countless others in the fandom, and me saying all this won’t ring any alarm bells. but i make no apologies for feeling the way i do; for feeling angry or frustrated. even if you’re not a content creator, even if you may not understand why this is such a big deal, the truth is, content creators hardly get treated right. many don’t get the appreciation they deserve. many get their edits stolen. and many have a hard time with mixed emotions when they see their work get less love than others. we’re human. it’s hard to be a content creator. it’s hard to constantly battle the pressure of what we expect from ourselves vs what others expect from us.

our edits take hours, days, sometimes longer. and it only takes a few minutes for fans to consume them, then demand more. the ratio does not add up. the positives and negatives sometimes outweigh each other. with the negatives, lately for me right now, taking the lead.

this latest situation with parts of my edit getting stolen, with this account acting the way they have, i simply wanna cry in anger. i wanna scream in frustration. i wanna delete everything because that’s the only way i know how to stop this from happening again. this has drained me. years of being in the macgyver fandom dealing with the same shit of my edits getting stolen…has utterly drained me.

Every person who’s a part of a fandom needs to read this. It’s beyond cruel to steal, and take praise for something content creators have poured themselves into making.
