Late Nights of Cigarettes and Selfishness
The nights I stayed up late,
Hands entwined with yours.
Watching re-runs of Scrubs,
Wrapped in blankets like the joint we smoked earlier.
While I sipped cheap whiskey,
Smoking the last of my cancer.
The nights I stayed up late,
With your chestnut head nestled upon my shoulder.
Perfectly situated into the nest of my neck.
Plans to live our lives together,
Plans I knew, unobtainable.
To backpack across the country,
Past the lush vegetation of the midwest,
Into the barren vast lands of nothingness.
Where we could be at one with ourselves,
The nights I stayed up late.
Never thinking of taking my eyes off of you,
As if you would vanish if I did.
Wishing things would never change,
The nights I stayed up late
Well past the moment you shut your tired eyes
Planning out our future, without you.
Thinking of the ways I could keep you forever,
Never wanting to share you with anyone.
While reading the texts you were sending him,
Only making me want to fight for you more.
Yet I never asked what you wanted...
And that was my biggest mistake.
