Quarter House is a minimal residence located in Saitama, Japan, designed by uenoa. This is a private residence for a couple and two children built in Saitama Prefecture. The request from the owner who runs a vintage furniture store was a large living space as a showroom for furniture. So what we thought was to create a one-room space with the highest ceiling as possible on the first floor, and to arrange the necessary rooms compactly for the family of four on the second floor. On an efficient rectangular plane, we cut part of it diagonally to make an opening. Large blocks of light coming from large diagonal openings are divided into the first and second floors with different spatiality. In addition, the diagonal openings make a closely relationship with the garden in the site and keep a appropriate distance from the neighborhood.
Eucalyptus II is a minimal studio space located in London, United Kingdom, designed by Hugh Strange Architects. Nestled beneath a large Eucalyptus tree, the project provides a small studio space for painting at the end of a long garden. The studio is in very close proximity to the tree, and so the foundations are designed in order to minimize impact on the roots. Six small steel piles support a steel frame lifted slightly above the earth, mean no digging or concrete were required to the ground works.
House for a Ceramic Designer is a minimal residence located in Ljubljana, Slovenia, designed by Arhitektura d.o.o.. The property features an internal central courtyard that connects the various living areas, providing abundant natural light and air flow. The facade consists of a smooth concrete finish that is contrasted within by warm wood accents. In addition, a low concrete wall surrounds the perimeter of the home to provide additional privacy.
Kamiyama is a minimalist renovation located in Tokyo, Japan, designed by APOLLO Architects & Associates. This project involved the renovation of a room in a low-rise condominium in a quiet residential district in central Tokyo. The client is a collector of furniture by designers such as Finn Juhl and contemporary fine art by the likes of Hiroshi Sugimoto and Gerhard Richter. Accordingly, the architects aimed to create a space in which such furnishings and works of art would be able to coexist. As with the concealment of the ceiling-mounted air conditioning ductwork and its assimilation into the coved ceiling with indirect lighting, they followed a theme of minimalism in creating the space, envisioning the idea of a small museum that inspires careful examination of each individual piece to focus attention on the meaning of the furnishings themselves.
Woven House is a minimal residence located in Lake Winnebago, Wisconson, designed by Bruns Architecture and A Still Life. While this family of six lives in New York, deep memories and extended familial connections make Wisconsin a second home. The design objective was to create a welcoming gathering place with a sophisticated sense of style while maximizing connections to the outdoors. Due to the proximity to the water, all spaces, storage and mechanicals needed to be located above grade. These parameters drove the size and volume of the home as the family’s needs and aspirations were addressed. The result is a spatial hierarchy that locates public areas for entertaining prominently off the main entry, while an office space and all bedrooms were positioned for more privacy.
House in Kamo is a minimal residence located in Shizuoka, Japan, designed by Seiichi Yamada Architect & Associates. The home sits on a newly re-organized plot of land that intermingles with the expansion of the city. The architects set the floor height slightly higher in order to capture as much sunlight as possible. Privacy within the interior was adjusted by a series of eaves. The plan was simply divided into four parts, and connected by a main living area to create a circular flow line from the first floor to the second floor.
The Sculptors Residence is a minimal space located in Stockholm, Sweden, designed by Norm Architects in collaboration with Menu & DUX. Curated by Norm Architects, an apartment in the heart of Stockholm becomes an artistic haven of creativity and comfort during the city’s design week this February. Through four different rooms that serve as an exhibition space for designs from MENU and DUX, tactile sculptures by British object-maker Nicholas Shurey, functional ceramic objects by Sofia Tufvasson and Atelier Armand, limestone and marble podiums by Östersjösten and dolomite plaster plinths by St. Leo stand alongside furniture, lighting and interior accessories to transform the space with bold, geometric forms, natural materials and sleek, Modernist lines that perfectly offset the classical details of the building.
All’Arco is a minimal 19th-century apartment located in Milan, Italy, designed by Atelierzero + Tommaso Giunchi. The main goal was the creation of an apartment in which a contemporary approach could fit within the unique soul of the original space. The internal distribution has undergone some changes to meet the needs of the new tenants, a couple with two children, who often love to host friends and family at home. The dining room and the living room, initially divided by an internal wall, have been united, creating a single vast space, defined by calm green light color.

SOL is a minimalist furniture collection created by Australia-based designer Sarah Ellison. The collection, which includes sofas, lounge chairs, tables, and shelving, focus mainly on sculptural forms with warm materials and colors. The pieces were inspired by vintage 1970s designs, heavily playing on proportions and scale. Most notable is the Muse sofa, which emphasizes on substantially rounded features with a focus on comfort.
Shedbox is a minimalist house located in Ghent, Belgium designed by Atelier Janda Vanderghote. The shed roofs are broken down. The existing concrete structure becomes the blueprint for the new plan. A new steel structure was developed between the old concrete structure. The concrete draws itself as a pencil line between “old” and “new.” The existing elements require a subtle interweaving of quality spaces and honest materials that enter into a dialogue with the existing rough structure. The contradiction between roughness and refinement forms a tension to frame the whole. The new home nestles in the existing contours of the shed. This gives the house a large outdoor space for living spaces and an intimate outdoor one for the more private rooms. The communal garden becomes the green core of the entire site.
Tesserete House is a minimalist residence located in Tesserete, Switzerland, designed by DF_DC. DF_DC is an architecture and urban design office concerned with the project of space as an interdisciplinary practice. The architects are interested in how scale – from the patterns of the urban to the craftsmanship of detail – interconnect and inform each other. Investigation of human-scale atmospheres is crucial in their research. The interior mainly utilizes concrete, which matches the exterior facade. The light interior further brightens the room by amplifying the abundant natural illumination during the day.
