The Irony
Meghan Markle and Black Women
I was very excited when I heard of the engagement between Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. I’m happy for her and both of them but I will say this. I see a lot of black women who feel like she’s their saving grace or some monumental victory for black women. I also see a lot of Black women calling her “Black” princess and claiming her as Black. My thing is Markle solely identifies as Biracial and will not claim one over the other as she’s stated. She’s not known for being championed on black issues let alone really speaking about her half black identity. She mostly identifies and hangs out in white circles. Most if all her friends are white and the only black woman she seems to have a connection to is her Black mother. So Why are black people so quick to claim biracials who clearly don’t want to be claimed. We seriously think she will walk into the royal family and begin a black lives matter conversation and waltz around in her natural hair. Meghan is a biracial Black woman with white features who looks like a tan white woman. She’s played mostly into her whiteness in order to get harry. Harry isn’t dating a straight up “sista”. I’m not saying Meghan owes the black community anything either nor does she need to educate the Royal family on black issues which is unlikely bc she’s her own person and she can do what she likes but let’s stop thinking things will change things for Black women in the U.K. or that she actually cares about black women. The only victory in this I see is that it shows black women have options and can date who they like at any age. We can have a fairytale ending to whomever but then again if Meghan was full black I question would she be on his arm. Just my thoughts on this.
not to mention that a lot of Black girls do NOT look like her 🤷🏾♀️
This is so wrong for so many reasons. Black women are so better than this
C: I’m attracted to all types of men – black, white, Asian, etc. Lately I’ve been feeling an especially strong attraction to white men, which isn’t a problem to me. With that being said, is one less pro-black based on who they choose to date and marry? I hear a lot of people, black women and men alike, say they could never date outside they’re race because they want someone to “share the struggle”. Can I be more than struggle though, can I be a person first, can I be a human being first? Don’t get me wrong, color and culture are very beautiful entities in of themselves, although I think I have more to offer than the color of my skin and what my people have been through. Only time and experience will tell.

also i just get annoyed that the narrative of black motherhood is so deeply rooted in being aggressive and beating kids and cursing kids out. it’s toxic and inaccurate. i have no desire to fall in line with a stereotype just because it’s expected of me.
