Had some interesting conversation with one of my co-workers today😅

He asked me if I've watched any new shows while we had the season off work🙃

I'm still sorta new to anime, but yeah, I started with MHA, went to Dr. Stone, watched season one of Rising of the Shield Hero before I stopped it🙃 Solo Levelling, and I've watched all except for the finale of AOT.

So we started talking about that. He said he hasn't watched AOT, but he's kept up with the plot through other people who've watched it. And we kinda commented on Hype-Train Mechanics and why we kinda just avoided it when it first came out.

I said I started watching it once before, but didn't get more than a few episodes in before quiting it cuz of the gore, but now that I'm older, I guess I have a thicker skin...?🙃 And the only reason I actually started watching it again was cuz that song that goes "If the world was ending I'd wanna be next to youuuuuu" and someone made a post saying "this song is about AOT", and my brother was looking up stuff about it, too, and found a post of someone online saying "AOT is basically 'If the jews deserved it'." And the combination of those two things is what made me wonder "What the hell is going on in this show?" Lol so I watched it.

I kinda just started explaining why it's NOT even that🤣 Cuz like the Marleyan's are all about "Eldians are Bad and forced others to Bare their Children and this and that, and Island Devils blah blah blah" the rebels are like "Ymir was Good and built bridges and Roads and all this and that!"

But in MY mind being Eldian and being "A Child A Ymir" are TOTALLY seperate things, first of all, because YMIR WAS A SLAVE! She didn't CHOOSE to do any of those things. She was FORCED to do the Eldian King's biddng and bare the Eldian King's children, who were then forced into a life by their King and Father who they HAD to obey. And I was kinda surprised when my co-worker actually seemed to be in agreement with me on this, cuz when I was saying this same thing to my brother, he acted like he didn't get what I was saying at all...🙃

So then I got kinda excited and started going on to say that when "The Mainland" came into the show, it was actually hugely disappointing to me. I lost so much interest in the show after that, but I kept watching it pretty much just to get it over with(which, also when I said this to my brother, he acted like that didn't make any sense either🙃) and my co-worker was like "ExACTLY bruh!"

I even said I don't even really know WHY it was such a disappointment, but he goes "I mean, it's cuz it turned into a Man-vs-Man. Cuz BEFORE it was kinda like a whole 'We're all Human' kinda thing, and it pretty much did a whole 180°."

And I😦 Duh... yeah, pretty much. Exactly that😅 Essentially a whole Genre shift, there🙃

And we started talking about Eren's character and all that stuff, and my co-worker was talking about "WHY did he have to go THAT far, though, bruh."

And to me it WAS disappointing the way they took his character, it felt like a huge let down, but at the same time He's Limited, his time as a Titan is Almost Up, he's Desperate, everything that's happened to him and his people is Essentially All the Marleyan's Doing: terrorized by Titan's for how ever long, controlling/commanding/weaponzing the Mainland Eldians, threatening to wipe out everyone he has LEFT in the world and make sure their last moments are filled with Terror. He could have found a way to expose the truth of Ymir to the world, maybe, but there really wasn't any guarantee that it would change ANYTHING or save ANYONE, and all he really WANTED is to save whatever family he has left. To let them Live Out their lives in Peace. Specifically THEIR lives. No regard for the future, no care for the past. And the only way to "make peace" is to be sure NO ONE can ever threaten them again... and how do that? Basically destroy the entire rest of the world. It's the only sure way🙃

So, yeah it was super disappointing how it went, but I still kinda get WHY Eren went the way he did.

Even so😑 what was the point?

That mass extinction and Genocide is unavoidable?😑

Marlryans: Bias and Fear "Eldian's Must Pay for their Sins. Wipe out the Island Devils."

Bad.

Zeke: "Let Time Erase all Eldians and their suffering from the Earth."

Still Bad.

Eren: "I deserve to Live in the world I was Born in. You kill and threaten all that matters to me, I will protect them By Any Means Necessary While I Still Have The Power. No one will threaten them again. No one will be LEFT to threaten them."

Born of Desperation and a Literal Death Deadline that you can sort of understand, but STILL BAD!

So that's the bit that my Co-worker had a problem with "What was even the Message, here? That genocide is unavoidable? Bruh. That's not true!" And I kinda can't stop thinking about it.

For real, what IS the message?

Cuz it COULD have been avoidable, so what was the point of dragging it down this road?

I guess it COULD have been something to do with the lessons of history, maybe?

I mean, with the Marleyan's they had a Version of history that paints Eldians as evil beings. The Rebels had only Glimpses of a Beneficial History and Assumed the Marleyan's version was all lies and fables to guilt them into suppression and slavery.

The only one who had the full scope, the full Picture, the history witnessed and explained in it's ENTIRETY was Eren... but he has other things in mind. He doesn't care about Educating anyone. Like I said before, he has no guarantees about taking that direction, and he's running out of time. But he's essentially disregarding the past and any future AFTER a lifetime. He doesn't care what happens AFTER all his friends grow old and die. He just wants THEM to be able to have peace in their lifetimes on the island and everyone else be damned.

So I guess in that way it COULD be a commentary on what false/broken/disregarded histories can lead to...? Maybe? Idk, but now I can't stop thinking about it...

Anyway! It was an interesting day and an interesting conversation!😀👍

Reblogging from an old post of mine. Wanted to add some resources and resource "search keyword" tips that I've come across since then that I didn't have before.New Masters Acedemy is a youtube channel I found a few years ago that has a Non-Nude series of timed figures for study. That's the main thing I used for awhile.

Aside from that it's mainly "Keyword" categories that I've found extremely helpful for non-nude figure/anatomy study. I've found poses are often pretty dynamic and energetic, this way. The costumes/outfits in these catagories are usually form-fitting/minimal enough to keep the form from being too ambiguous without activating that "awkward nudity" discomfort. I've found some books specifically on ballet excersises and photography of ballet that have served Me nicely.

Ballet

Figure Skating

Gymnastics

Acrobatics/Contortionist

Swimming

Diving

Dancing

Running

Boxing/Kick Boxing/MMA/Fighting techinques

Bodybuilding

You could also try searching "Yoga" and "Stretching Excercises" or just using regular excercise tapes for more simple refs.

Searching the keywords coupled with "Photography", "Training", or "Excerise" usually yields decent results for me, at least. In photos and other resources. I've found some pretty decent books with references this way.

Once you have a little more practice with seeing the figure in extreme positions and being able to actually intuit shape and form, then you can start to use other references with more ambiguous clothing from other action categories more easily.

I've used sites like Pexels and Pinterest as well other stock image/photography sites. Which specific sites I use mainly comes down to personal preference, so you can search around and find what suits you.

I'm only naming names and not linking links because discovery is it's own teacher, and you might come across things I haven't found yet/things better suited to you.

Also, because a lot of my study references are books I saw online and then magically randomly found in a dollar-pop thriftshop🙃

This really bothers me. Idk why it bothers me so much. I know it's from 2008 and nobody cares, but it really, really bothers me. Lol XD

Why does it matter so much if an artist prefers non-nude references that you have to go OUT of your way to poke fun and belittle them for it? Why would you be so offended that someone is searching for clothed refs? And why does that automatically make them "screwed up" by "some silly religious dogma"?

First off, It is Literally Just their Preference and that really should just be the end of it. It literally does not effect your life in the slightest. Sooo, why does it matter to you so much that you have to go out of your way to try and make them feel bad about it?

Second, there could be any number other reasons why they don't want nude photos on display while they're studying. They could be in an environment with young children, for one. I myself have two young sisters who could walk into the room see a naked model on my computer while I'm studying. I don't want that, they don't want that, nobody would be happy in that situation.

Third, it doesn't have to be down to some religious dogma. Some people just prefer not to see random people naked. It's not that weird. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say I think most people would agree that you wouldn't want to go into the grocery store and see everyone walking around naked. Would you say that's down to religious dogma, too?

No. In that case, it's just really unsanitary.

But my point is, a lot of people just prefer not to see people naked. Like when you accidentally walk in on someone using the bathroom or getting out of the shower. It's embarrassing and awkward. It's not like you would just keep standing there staring at them. That would be weird. (unless you were like in a romantic relationship with them or something it would probably be different, but that's not what I'm talking about)

Just because you're an arty farty that likes seeing naked people doesn't mean every other person in the world who DOESN'T is screwed by some dogma. Sometimes nudity is just something some are desensitized to. Sometimes it's something some are really sensitive about. And Sometimes that's really all there is to it.

Can I offer you a gummy worm Tangela in these trying times?

I saw a vid of this girl on yt commenting on "Monster×Human" tropes in media and saying how it's always "monster male×pretty woman" and NEVER the other way around (at least not in mainstream) because "Men require women to be beautiful before they can be chosen to be loved" and I🙃

I went into the comments to see if anyone had mentioned "Penelope" because that's the first movie I'd thought about. And yeah a few people did, others mentioned Howl's Moving Castle(which I've never seen, so have no opinion on one way to the other), and a few others mentioned The Corpse Bride.

Which I have seen and was almost a little embarrassed that it wasn't the first one I thought of🤣

Only to see people arguing that "it Doesn't Count because he didn't end up choosing her in the end" EXCUSE ME?!

He DID, tho. He DID choose Emily. He chose Emily over LIVING! Yeah, he did it because he thought Victoria was gone and he no longer had any reason to return to the land of the living, but he didn't choose to Die Selfishly! He was going to Die and Marry Emily to Reside Eternally With Her in the Underworld because that's what SHE wanted, and he CARED about her enough to be CONTENT with that. He Chose Her… and SHE stopped him herself.

And they think that doesn't count just because they don't end up together?🙃

I mean, The Phantom and Christine don't end up together, but everyone I know who knows the story still counts it as part of the trope🙃 so how come that counts but the Corpse Bride DOESN'T count as the reverse trope?

…aaaaand women everywhere are romanticizing the Phantom despite him being… horrifying by action FAR more than appearance and saying that he SHOULD have ended up with Christine🙃 Um… he literally tormented her fiance in front of her to make her choose him🙃 and when she chose him, it was out of PURE PITY. Not affection in the way Victor chose Emily. But the Phantom is Sexualized while Emily is dismissed as "not fitting the trope"?

Idk but to me, that feels like it has a lot more to do with how the Women REACT to these "beastly" male characters than what men supposedly expect of women🙃

Another thing I noticed is in "the Corpse Bride" and "Penelope", they're essentially "self-love/inner peace/self-contentment" stories in the "Monster×Human" Trope we're talking about. They're not saved by a man, they move on their own.

In "the Beauty and the Beast" and "the Phantom of the Opera" the Redemption arc HINGES on the woman. SHE'S the reason the beast man CHANGES or his curse is BROKEN or he sets her FREE or whatEVER.

With the Monster Women×Pretty Man trope, the stories are the women empowering THEMSELVES.

But with the Monster Man×Pretty Woman trope? It's the Woman having the power over HIM, someone Big, probably darkminded, even DANGEROUS, and the Woman has the power change HIM, to rescue HIM, to break HIS curse.

And then she wonders why the latter trope is more dominate in media?

Try "Feminine Ego."

It's essentially "A woman don't need no man" vs "The Man needs a woman to save him".

It's MORE gratifying to indulge in a story where you have the power OVER someone ELSE to CHANGE them into what you WANT than it is to indulge in a story where YOU find the power and agency over YOURSELF to make your OWN choices.

I don't think it really has anything to do with "what men expect of women" as much as it has to do with how the feminine audience responds and how much of the POINT of the story they actually miss for sake of romanticizing pre-redeemed behaviors as "hot".

not to sound old fashioned or whatever but getting rid of payphones is a mistake, and the only reason we should do it is if we're replacing them with free, public use phones. Having the ability to reach out to others in every place of public congress and transit is an important safety feature and the advent and adoption of smartphones does not negate their utility.

I know i've already lost this battle, so it's somewhat pointless to say, but smartphones die. chargers aren't always there. smartphones break. some people don't have them. Being able to call someone and ask for help, to get in touch with friends and family, without relying on something you yourself own, is a societal good.

Furthermore, expecting everybody to have a single piece of fragile technology on them at all times to the point that critical services are not available without them is truly mind-boggling to me. This goes for things like restaurant menus and transit maps as well. you should be able to navigate the world without a brick made by Apple or Samsung, and if you can't, then something is fundamentally broken. It's one thing for new technology to augment an existing real-world experience, it's another thing to usurp it entirely.

“Take my hand”, Alex asks, his hand stretched out towards me.

“Alex, I’ve already made enough mistakes-”.

“Please… trust me on this one. If you do, I’ll buy you some chocolate”.

My eyes open with shock at his words, my heart going in loopty-loops. “Then what are you waiting for? Take my hand”, I insist, offering it to him.

“What about what you said earlier?” Alex questions, his eyebrow raised.

I start coughing dramatically, like there’s something caught up in my throat. Afterwards, I compose myself, thinking of the best explanation that can shock the entire universe.

“So you see… I experienced something called temporary death so I have no idea what you’re talking about”, I explain, taking his hand in mine.

A smile envelopes on his face as he begins to chuckle which soon turns into a fit of laughter.

“You ready?” he asks once he’s done with his signature smile. But dang does that mischievous look on his face make him more attractive than he already is.

“Ready”, I say as we jump from the tree we were on to his balcony and for the first time in a long time, I feel like we were back to our old ways; as friends.

(A combination of four of my characters personalities and concepts. It’s complicated yes, but it’s fun to write. Two of the characters that are featured are in an ongoing wattpad while the other two are in one of my stories without an ending. Basically, I’m saying I haven’t started writing it)

Words to use instead of ‘said’

**Using the word ‘said’ is absolutely not a bad choice, and in fact, you will want to use it for at least 40% of all your dialogue tags. Using other words can be great, especially for description and showing emotion, but used in excess can take away or distract from the story.
