Title: Sheer Rage & Love

Summary:

One hand clutched the fabric around her shoulders, while the other held up the missive. “This is from my brother.” It wasn’t a question, but that dark head bobbed once in answer. “My brother who is in Camelot. And you…” She trailed off, finally taking in the man in front of her. Broad shoulders hidden under a heavy riding cloak hinted at his physique; a warrior's stature. She spared a look back up into those eyes that seemed darker than pitch, unable to place why they seemed so familiar. It took just a moment longer for the realization to make itself clear; this was no stranger.

“Balinor,” her voice was once again quiet.

His answering smile was a small, wan thing. Even so, the lines around his eyes came forward with it. “Hunith.”

Arthur & Merlin | 4.01 "The Darkest Hour - Part 1"

"Come on Mer-lin!" exclaimed Arthur, "I'm not paying you to sit there looking pretty, get over here!" He emphasised his statement by throwing a glove to where Merlin was sat several feet away. It hit his head softly with a thump. Merlin was halfway to his feet when Arthur's words registered in his brain. Had Arthur just said what he thought he'd just said? "Did he just…?" asked Merlin frozen and for a moment he forgot what it was like to breathe. Besides him he heard Gwen giggle. Arthur it seemed hadn't realised what he'd said. But in the immediate and utter silence that followed in the courtyard, a frown appeared on his face. He turned and looked to where his knights had just been making a raucous but now stood frozen various expressions of surprise, disbelief, and in Gwaine's case glee, on their faces. "What?" He asked as Gwaine let out a wheeze like he'd been punched. None of his knights replied, imitating statues as they were. "Well, get back to it. I'm not paying you all to stand around either." snapped Arthur, immediately irritated at being a but of a joke he wasn't aware of. Merlin's body functions seemed to take this as a sign to start working properly again and he grabbed the glove from where it had fallen onto the floor, refusing to look at Gwen knowing his whole face was likely red up to his ears. He certainly felt like it was on fire he just hoped everyone would ignore what was just an embarrassing faux-pas. There was no way Arthur actually thought Merlin of all people was pretty after all. That was certainly clear enough from all the teasing that he was subject to every day from the prat about various parts of his face. Like his eyes being to bright, or his cheekbones too pointy, or his ears too out there. Unfortunately, Gwaine, never one to leave things be when he'd sniffed blood in the water grinned "What so we're not pretty enough for you Princess?" "You just called Merlin pretty." answered Gwaine. "You said, and I quote: Merlin, you're so pretty get over here." "I certainly did not!" was the reply although a red blush was making its way across Arthur's face. "Eh," and Gwaine waved his hand in a so-so motion "artistic license." and then yelped as Leon, who had gotten over his shock stomped on Gwaine's foot. Hard.

Merlin is turned back in time, only to get stuck in a time loop.

And Merlin relishes in it.

The same day, over and over and over and Arthur is simply alive. It's a mundane day, only one assassin to kill.

Merlin's only fears are that he forgets to kill the assassin once and that this might lead to the time loop stopping.

...

What he doesn't know is that eventually, many hundred loops later, Arthur wakes up in the time loop and knows- I've done this day before. Is it like this for someone else too?

But the only one different than yesterday is Merlin. And he's a million loops different from before.

Arthur grows sick of the time loop quickly... but is he imagining it, or is it the first time in years that Merlin looks...
