“A poetry major? That sounds amazing! I can get pretty insane about things myself. I studied a lot of languages on my own when I was younger including the dead ones. My father isn’t big on extended schooling but I did a lot of that by myself.”

“Oh my. That’s an awfully large question. I prefer a lot of the classics in their original language. Madame Bovary or Anna Karenina. Oh and War and Peace is always good. Look at me. You asked for one and I can’t stop. What about you?”

“Oh, I absolutely devoured Anna Karenina last year! In English, though, unfortunately. I know that a lot is lost in translation. I can read French pretty well, but Russian is beyond me.”

“Well, I mean, obviously books of poetry are usually my favorites. My number one is always Evangeline, that’s Longfellow, and I love Leaves of Grass. As for prose I really enjoyed Catcher in the Rye, surprisingly. Maybe just because my parents never allowed me to read it.”

“Right well you can join my club if you’d like. We can be boring together. I mean you do have wonderful taste in books after all so it’s practically meant to be.”

“Oh, thank you! It’s a wonderful side affect of being a poetry major. And I can also spend months analyzing a single line of poetry, which would be considered insane under any other circumstance.”

“So, which book is your favorite, if you had to choose?”

“I didn’t mean to be rude. It’s not so dreadful. I mean it’s your choice and all. It’s just always been sorta beyond my understanding,” Ivory attempted to explain as she realized how she may have sounded. “Oh no! I’m quite alright. I just get too curious at times. Another odd quirk of mine. I understand rebellion. I had a phase of it myself. I think mine was a bit more damaging to others so I’d say you chose an alright alternative. Wow that sounds odd. I’m going on and on because I made myself nervous. My apologies.”

“Oh, no, you don’t have to be nervous! I just get a little embarrassed about not being able to kick this is all.” Amethyst smiled at the girl, trying to show that she wasn’t angry. Her smoking had once been cool and fun but as her stress mounted she recognized that it was getting out of control. “So, how did you rebel? Graffiti, protesting organized government, something like that?”

The woman looked up at what the other was talking about. “I think it’s a little high for me too.”

Amethyst looked at the woman and then back up at the high bookshelf. “Hm, I suppose you’re right.”

“It’s okay, I’ve read it a million times anyways.”

“Right, ‘whimsical.’ I’ve never flown a kite before, but I think next time you might want to do it in a clearer place.”

“Give me a second, I’ll see if I can reach it.”

“Right, well...as you can see, I’m rather unexperienced in the endeavor.”

She stepped back and watched him as he tried to get the kite.

“Oh, thank you so much. I’m sorry to have bothered you.”

“I suspect that’s the case. You’re lucky you missed it. And my tip to you is to make sure to be careful at town events. You never know what’s going to happen around here.”

“Oh, you don’t have to worry about that. I’m really quite boring. The last party I went to was when I was reading The Great Gatsby.”

“You as well,” Ivory agreed with a soft smile. “Not to be rude but why do you do that,” she inquired, point to the cigarette. It was a habit people picked up that she failed to understand.

“Oh, um...well it’s really a dreadful habit.” she said, surprised at Ivory’s forwardness. “A boy I was seeing when I first started college smoked, and I guess I started to impress him, plus I was going through a rather rebellious phase. Still am, I suppose.”

“I keep meaning to quit, but you do tend to get addicted quite fast. I’m sorry if it bothered you...?”

“I’m not much taller but I’ll try. Which one is it again?”

“The red can right there.”

“Actually, if you could grab two that’d be lovely.”

“Sure thing. How come you’ve got it so high up there? It doesn’t seem very practical.”

“Oh, I didn’t mean to. I just thought I would be all whimsical and try flying a kite but it turns out you do need to have some idea how to do it.”

“Sure, I can get it. But it’ll cost you.”

“Um...I’m sorry, could you reach that for me?”

What’s there to be afraid of? Nothing. They’re just woods.

“Well, you know, bears and such. Or somebody could come attack you and...oh God, I’m turning into my mother.”

“Sorry...I can’t help talking about that book and I noticed you were looking at it. It’s one of my favorites.”

“I’ll be sure to do that. As soon as I have you thrown out for smoking in a building that clearly says smoking is not allowed inside.”

“Oh!” she quickly puts it out on top of a nearby trash can and throws it away. “I’m so sorry! I really had no idea...I completely spaced. I’m so sorry.”

“I don’t know if anyone ever figured it out. I was also too busy panicking to be worried about how. I just wanted to make it stop.”

“Really? Well I suppose I could have one. I’m Ivory by the way. I don’t think I’d mentioned that.”

“Amethyst. Lovely to meet you.” she smiles and puts out the cigarette on a nearby ash try.
