chestnut;; this is a most curious, multi-faceted wood, which varies greatly in its character depending on the wand core, and takes a great deal of color from the personality that possesses it. the wand of chestnut is attracted to witches and wizards who are skilled tamers of magical beasts, those who possess great gifts in herbology, and those who are natural fliers.
core: unicorn hair;; unicorn hair generally produces the most consistent magic, and is least subject to fluctuations and blockages. wands with unicorn cores are generally the most difficult to turn to the dark arts. they are the most faithful of all wands, and usually remain strongly attached to their first owner, irrespective of whether they are an accomplished witch or wizard.
BIO.
born on february 24th, the same day as her famous father, newt scamander, writer of fantastic beasts and where to find them, and becoming part of the ministry on behalf of magical creatures, it was obvious the adopted girl belonged with the small family. “she’s going to be like daddy!” her older brother, ronnie, would say. her mother, tina, could only smile at newt and whispered, “she’ll be just like her daddy.” newt loved the thought but wouldn’t put pressure on the small, smiling to the brim baby that his family had tried to place on him.
maddy always knew she was different from the rest of her family because of her skin color, yes, but newt and tina never hid her indian roots and encouraged her to learn — if only she had the focus or interest. all that mattered was her family and the scamanders were just that. she had the best home life one could imagine and found no reason to ever worry about something she didn’t know. she loved being maddy scamander. her parents adored and complimented one another perfectly. her brother was a blast to annoy and wrestle with. tina always looked at both their children with bright eyes. newt’s half-smile said more than his words ever needed to. the pureblood family wasn’t ever going to be the traditional type which suited maddy just fine. if she didn’t appreciate her family before she went to hogwarts, she definitely did after she started. she did all she could to spread the scamander love she’d always been taught from her first moment there.
“hufflepuff!” maddy rushed to the table donning yellow, black and embracing the furious badgers. upon sitting, she couldn’t help herself and began hopping in her seat with excitement and sporting a smile bigger than her face. she offered her hand to everyone and anyone she could reach. “hi there! you can call me maddy!” it was virtually impossible not to love her and the way she approached the world. she was contagious.
because maddy had such good friends, she focused on them and her social life more than her grades. technically she did the work, passed exams and did fine on her owls and newts but her grades were nothing to write home about. over the years, tina did all she could to get maddy to focus but couldn’t get her social butterfly to trade one thing for another. maddy couldn’t imagine sitting in front of books all day writing page after page after page of subjects that bored her.
with newt and tina still at the ministry and ronnie joining them straight out of hogwarts there was pressure for maddy to go down similar paths as her family. she would give the pressure a moment’s thought but it wasn’t in maddy’s bones to let it get her down. she always marched to the beat of her own drum. the one thing she got right was being her daddy’s girl. she knew he would help her tease out what she ultimately wanted. — it was like seeing a glimmer of the internal struggle he himself had. maddy had forever been his shadow. he was the one who fully encouraged her weird self to be her weird self. maddy was determined to be that, just as he had been his whole life. to her surprise, she would find herself wanting to follow in her dad’s footsteps and start to sit behind those books, reading and taking notes for a very special project.
after graduation, maddy sat cross-legged on the floor in front of newt. she nervously and excitedly asked what a companion to his famous work might look like. the shock that his daughter really would want to “be like her daddy” and to add to one of his biggest accomplishments made him tear up.
while compiling research she still had to pay the bills. because of her growing writing skills, outgoing personality and opinionated nature, she applied at the daily prophet as an advice columnist. it was a lark, really, so when she was hired she didn’t know what to say or do. what kind of advice could she give with blasted death eaters roaming the streets? obviously she didn’t think that application through. after a month of writing for the prophet maddy went to the quibbler. not quite surprisingly, writing there was more her style — its questionable reputation didn’t matter. they were her kind of people. people with open minds. the weird ones.
maddy’s open-mindedness and strong will tried to stick firmly with the order but couldn’t keep up with every meeting, every training and every update. she wasn’t always present but her flakiness didn’t stop what she believed to be true: she held firm and aligned with the order. without fear she was there when action is necessary. she would always do the right thing and the order was the right thing.
