Communication Design Studies Reflection

During this one semester of this subject I believe I have learned so much about many ideas within design and the history behind letterforms. The lectures and workshops were very interesting and engaging, shame it was in the morning, It was very tempting to fall back asleep. Though we didn’t have the chance to interact much It was quite interesting hearing everyone’s backgrounds and reasons that they chose to study design, things like, I wanted to do Architecture but was offered this instead or I need a career change. For the first time I met so many people with such a wide range of interest within design, from this I was able to see the many ways they had solved or not solved problems. So many people made amazing projects and I was able to reflect upon mine much better, but this also made some elements of the subject hard. It was hard to find the motivation to do many steps that I was not interested In, It was also difficult to not compare my project to others in a negative way. Learning to overcome these was probably the most valuable thing I had learned In this subject.

Finally finished this last assignment, I’m quite pleased on how it turned out even though my room is still messy from it. By far this was the most enjoyable project this semester, though the research took a while I ws very interested in the topic of Dr.Seuss. I tred to have each page with a theme that vaguely can relate to the interview question and also I avoided to many colours on one page and plenty of white space, to stay true to his style. I found It difficult to decide on what the front and back covers should look like, as I did the inside first but I eventually decided on, with the advice from my professor to keep it in the same style and I believe that was the correct choice. Making a Zine is a first for me but I have a few Ideas of personal projects I could do.

Recently I found Arimura Taishi’s Instagram page and I really enjoied his animations along with the Space Hamster Quartet. I quite like the way the music matches perfectly with the visuallys especially in, ミニ落語 (Mini Rakugo) and ダンシング火星人 (Dancing Martian). After seening the simple but cute animations I really want to try It for myself.

Communication Design Studies Lesson

From our activity in week 12 we were experimenting with changing the main focus of the given file. Which included a body of text, a caption and a photo. We first started by making the image the main subject, my first instinct was to add colour but after realising the file was in grayscale I decided to look for an alternative solution because commonly your later ideas would be more interesting than the first most obvious idea. Then for the text I was a little stuck, I was avoiding warping the text so I could maintain readability. But after seeing the other’s really creative solutions, I wish I had forgotten that.

Sanrio Europe store was just launched with a a new collection of Sanrio merchandice and It’s totally something I like. The stylistic but simple drawings of the charaters and the muted colours go really well together. I also love the Japanese typography, they did a really good job at making somthing simple and for everyone without being too plain.

Communication Design Studies Assignment Draft

Here’s the first page created for the zine. I really enjoyed the style of books, the brick colors and clean linework is something I quite enjoy. But I wanted to contrast it with the other works done by Dr.Seuss. Some of these works are quite interesting as the subject matter is very different but the style is almost the same, while others the style is wildly different. I thought that since the Interview will have questions regarding these works it could be interesting to collage them together in a zine inspired by a previous lesson activity.

Communication Design Studies Lesson

In today’s lesson we looked at the different styles of collages and then were tasked to make our own collages. So far this was the lesson I enjoyed the most, I really was inspired by the topic. I had no Idea that the style of three dimensional collages existed. I really disliked colleges in primary school, I had no idea where to place the rips of paper, and placing it anywhere does not help. Lucky for today’s lesson I had an old pile of almost every and any university that had a design course’s pamphlet or booklet. So I was spoiled for choice on cool looking images and colours, and of cours inspiring text. I’m really happy with the end result, some areas are convincingly genuine looking.

Communication Design Studies Research

After choosing Dr.Seuss as my subject to interview for the upcoming assignment, I started off with the research with the thought of what questions to ask in mind. The first place I looked was my brother’s book shelf, where he still has books from when we were kids and I was able to find the giant stack of Dr.Seuss books which included other series which were not illustrated by Dr.Seuss. I was purely looking for both illustrated and written by Dr.Seuss. With books in hand I continued my research, discovering the many other works done by Dr.Seuss. Next step will be to think of some questions.

Communication Design Studies Assignment Inspiration

I got recommended for this video today. Actually I had just visited the popup gallery in Melbourne. I was pretty amazed at the art of Dr.Seuss. After reading the books as a child I still remember his style and I guess I've come to enjoy it, but I definitely thought it was scary as a kid. Maybe the long hairy limbs on many characters of the cross hatching shading are done everywhere. And these paintings really brought that feeling back, creepy. But with that all said the movies that came later were probably worse.

Communication Design Studies Activity #2

In this activity we were tasked to create the alphabet out of only shapes found within the same sized square, So usign the quarter circle shape and the leftover cutout I created every letter with a few set of rules. Things like only 90 degree rotations and no more than two shapes, which proved quite difficult coming up to letters like ‘l’ or ‘s’ and many letters became quite abstract while others were either reflections or rotations of other letters. Maybe the rules were a bit too strict.

Trying a different approach now, looking at my possible materials and then deciphering a question relation to design from them has really helped pick up the pace. Out of the many Ideas generated, my chosen material and question had literally been sitting under my nose the whole time. Similar to ransom letters, made out of magazine letters, I plan to rip the printed assignment sheet up randomly and position them into letter forms asking the question, Should I study Design? Which I believe is a relevant question nowadays and companies are starting to look more at life experiences and profile and character rather than the degree you received. It definitely was on my mind last year, but ultimately I decided that I have much to learn about design.

Communication Design Studies Lecture 3&4

In lectures 3 and 4 we continued to look at the development of letterforms around the world in both their practicality and aesthetic, aiding to illustrations or architecture. Throughout this lecture we looked at many different fonts and the reasons or context behind them. I noticed that I never paid too much attention to fonts maining only using the pre-downloaded fonts and really only sticking to a few. As a small project of mine, I explored the many fonts available online and was able to find quite a few I liked such as, Astounder and crackly. After the dive down the rabbit hole there was really only one thing to do. I needed to make my own handwriting a font, as I guess you could call it a design that I have been developing from my whole life, almost. I used a free site online to make it, but next time i'll do be sure to write a bit cleaner.

Communication Design Studies Assignment I Have a Question

I’m quite happy with the outcome of this project, I spent a lot of time deciding on the layout of the letters, rather than a simple grid. To me it still looks like it's missing something, maybe some colour but i was advised that it was fine like this. I like the material that I chose as I could mix both the bold text and black paper for an interesting effect within the type. T would be my favorite with S at least, being that I left it too thin.

Communication Design Studies Fail

My first Idea involving ripped paper to form a typeface didn’t do so well. It didn’t occur to me that the lack of shadows or just the rips would provide enough contrast in order to see the letter. I could’ve tried suspending the paper, but I don’t know even where to start if I had wanted to do that. Oh well, lesson learned.

Communication Design Studies Activity #1

Our first online activity happened to be quite similar to the others where we were asked to find a noodle-like material and form into letterforms. Well, exactly all the letters, into a sentence. For example;"The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" is an English-language pangram—a sentence that contains all of the letters of the alphabet. While not wanting to use food materials, upping the scale and going for the longest extension cable I own would surely work too. It proved quite difficult as the cable stubbornly refused to do sharp turns. But overall It turned out alright, but I’m thinking that while the curves and bends give a certain character to letterforms, I find it much too unruly and messy.

Communication Design Studies Week 3

In our second lesson we are sculpting with homemade playdough, imitating the exaｍple from the previous lector, how some of the first forms of documentation were done using clay and reeds from a river bank. In the first activity, I had decided that a good portion of my time should be spent on getting the tablet as round and flat as possible, I really didn’t have time for an interesting question. But I was quite happy with how the text turned out, almost looking like a font, due to the curves all being at the same radius. I also enjoyed the last activity, where we were challenged to represent yourself in the playdough. I went with the third Idea I had. Rather than attempting a popsicle stick self portrait/icon, I chose to do something that simply was undeniably me, its a shame people couldn’t Identify my fingerprint.
