Be Who You Wanna Be, B-a-r-b-i-(me)

I think the debate over the physical appearance of the Barbie Dolls and dolls alike, is absolutely ridiculous. I’m all about love your own unique body images don’t get me wrong. But Barbie isn’t saying, don’t eat, don’t be fat, etc. Barbie is a girl who can literally do anything. She is a woman of infinite careers. She is meant to inspire little girls to chase their dreams no matter how large, or how nonexistent they are yet.

 I like to think of myself as a sort of Barbie. I don’t mean I’m just your basic blonde chick. I aspire to do every type of career I can get my hands on, anything that comes from inspiration. I want to be an actor, dancer, writer, photographer, painter, producer, director, event planner, and a designer. All these amazing career paths that all send an adrenaline rush through my body. I just happen to be blonde, making my “I feel like Barbie” statement seem pretty ludicrous.

 This drive I have inside of me has to stem from something subconscious, I don’t think I was just born to become all of these things. This drive has to come from a source. I was born in the mid 90’s when Barbie’s were still a huge hit with little girls like myself. There was no controversy over her plastic anatomy, she was just made out to be this average girl who did everything she set her mind too, even had the boy of her dreams! Until Mattel broke them up that is…  She was made out to be a real girl with REAL dreams. I don’t think I’m the only 90s kid who has this same internal drive. Many new actors and singers are my age, they shot for the moon, and those individuals knew they had nothing to lose. Probably because Barbie told them it was okay to do so. I know Barbie didn’t set out for little girls to become famous, but she set a precedent to do something extraordinary with their individual dreams.

 This controversy has come to light along with all of the head butting over shirts that tell people to “Eat less”. These body image standards and body shaming tactics are disgusting. But trying to destroy the good name that Barbie had just because Mattel designed her to be a certain size, is just another way of body shaming. Barbie is a girl, she isn’t supposed to represent every girl in the world, she had a story, and she was one person. Saying that Barbie was teaching girls to look like her is ridiculous! She was just set out to be a normal girl, with extraordinary talent and passion to change the world. Which was the point of creating Barbie, so prove anyone could do these amazing things.   Disclaimer…it isn’t teaching girls that looking like Barbie will get you far in your career endeavors either…because that is far from the truth.
