“It doesn’t matter anyway,” Maddie smiled before tapping her order pad. “Do you want something else with your order?”

“I mean, it’s probably a good conversation starter if anything,” Maddie said, giving a smile. “I can’t remember if there was a second version of the joke or not.”

“Everything he’s gone through?” Shaun knew of Mads more than he actually knew him. He knew some people who knew Mads, that sort of thing. “I mean…” He made a thoughtful noise. “I love Trinity, really, I do. I just think that like, if I’m gonna marry her, I’m gonna do it on my own time, not because my mom thinks I need to have a kid before I’m 25.”

“Yeah, he lost his wife a couple of years ago, you didn’t know?” She frowned a bit, shifting in her position a little bit. “Well, then that’s what your mom needs to understand. Wow if we had to have a kid before I was 25 I’d be screwed considering I’m 28.”

“Yes, yes it was. It was funny then and it’s still funny now even though it seemed to come out of the blue.”

“Moms are so…” Shaun made a noise that didn’t really mean anything. “Why do they wanna push everyone into marriage so soon? I thought the whole thing was ‘wait until you’re sure they’re the one!’ y’know? Like, when I was in high school, my mom told me to wait to make sure the girl I took to prom was the one I really wanted to take.”

“Well, I know for me, my mom wants me to marry Mads because he’s all I’ve talked bout for almost two years now. I know he’s the one but it’s way, way too soon to even think of that given what he’s gone through. I’m happy just being with him. Your mom sounds like someone that just doesn’t want you to miss out on it. Do you think your girlfriend’s the one? Is she all you think about and you can’t wait until you’re done doing whatever you’re doin so that you can see her and make her laugh and just hold hands walking down the street? That’s what my mom used to say to me and my sister. That we’d know the guy - or girl - was the right one when they were your first thought waking up and your last thought drifting off to sleep.”

“My mom actually asked me if I was planning on proposing for Valentine’s Day. It hasn’t even been 6 months, and she’s already telling me about wedding locations she saw in O Magazine last issue.”

“She just wants you to be happy,” Maddie gave a shrug of her shoulders. “My mother asked me if I had already gotten married at a courthouse because I’ve been in love with Mads for a while. “Did you at least tell her nicely that it’s not in the plans just yet?”

“I - “ Maddie blinked. “Um, I get it but I haven’t heard that joke honestly since elementary school.”

“Nope, don’t think the flu works that way Josh,” Maddie laughed. “There have been no coughs, sniffles or praying to the toilet gods for me so I think we’re both safe.”

“I’m pleased to tell you I’m fit as a fiddle. Perhaps spending time with so many ill people has had a marvellous effect on my immune system. Anyway, I hope the men in your life are doing better now. Was it anything very serious?” 

“That’s good to hear, I think mine is just super hyped up from taking care of sick family all my life,” she smiled and shook her head. “No, nothing too serious. My boyfriend’s son got the flu and then he got the flu but lots of fluids and rest and chicken soup helped.”

Anastasia rolled her eyes with a huge grin on her face, “That man is going to marry you one day for more reasons than your incredible cooking ability. Speaking of which, do I hear wedding bells in the horizon?” She nudged her friend on the shoulder for an answer. “Fruity white wine, got it. It’s a date then,” she clapped her hands together to reflect her excitement.

“Someday, maybe. Who knows. We just started dating anyway after, many years of song and dance between each other and avoiding that we liked one another. He needs time to keep healing and I honestly don’t plan on going anywhere. I love him.” Maddie laughed at how excited Anastasia got and shook her head. “What about you? Any wedding bells miss thing?”

“A pro, huh? Well, I might have to take you up on that offer. I’ll be responsible for the wine. Cooking definitely isn’t my strong suit, but you won’t be disappointed with the wine selection.”

“A pro, I’m telling you, that man’s going to marry me one day because I just remind him of home” Maddie joked, she didn’t actually see that happening but still. Hmm, a good white wine should do with the soup, maybe something with a slightly fruity dip near the end?”

“Oh very cute,” Maddie laughed, shaking her head. “Trust me if I was a carrier of anything, I would make sure to only go around those that are a waste of the air that everyone else breathes. What have you been up to Timmy?”
