Can’t promise we’ll leave together, depends if Vic wants me to wait around for him.”
Divya shook her head, pulling a face that somehow combined disgust and compassion. Even the simplest of heels were the source of pain and discomfort for her and she couldn’t even begin to imagine what the process of breaking in a brand new pair of point shoes might have been. “Sure, why not. That sounds quite nice.”

Billie, or Bee as she sometimes liked to be called, twirled herself around the empty stage. She let a grin grow on her face as she felt the air fly through her hair. Her moment of peace, however, was interrupted by a sudden noise. “Oh! Sorry, I thought it was empty in here.”
Divya, now muttering to herself under her breath, scanned the room intensely as she tried to locate the pair of fairly expensive gloves she had apparently lost the night before. The caretaker had allowed her in but had apparently forgotten to mention the space was indeed being used by someone. “Good god,” she breathed out, embarrassed. “I’m sorry. I just... I think I left something here last night. I’m just trying to find... that.” Good going, Divya.

He peered into her eyes for a moment, generally adept at reading people thanks to his own job - witnesses, jurors even just people on the street. She was genuine and it wasn’t just something she was saying to sound good. “I’m glad. Compassion is painful… and it’s also sorely lacking in this world. So I hope you never lose it.” He made a face. “Those bloody wigs are scratchy and hot and expensive as can be!” he declared with a grumble. “But it’s some old fourteenth century tradition that frankly, no one has ever said to stop. So they never have. It’s why I prefer most of my cases to get settled out of court.”
Divya felt curiously unnerved for the few seconds the man studied her, almost as if she was being scrutinised for some reason. It was a weird feeling but not one she was unfamiliar with. “Compassion is a funny thing. I mean, you feel really helpless a lot of the time,” she pointed out, deciding against a proper rant on the matter. “That’s kind of ridiculous. I mean, sure, traditions are fun and all but surely wearing a silly wig is not one of the more important ones. If anything, it seems completely unnecessary. Then again, who am I to say what’s right or wrong if it works for the people doing it. I’m sure you look dashing in your wig.”

Divya had no idea how she would’ve reacted if she had accidentally heard the conversation the other woman had been engaged in just seconds before. Luckily for her, however, she didn’t have to worry about the consequences of that as she’d been completely lost in her thoughts after a particularly interesting phone call with her cousin. “I didn’t see you either. I should pay more attention, really. The streets of London are not exactly fit for mindless wandering.”

Benji was nothing if not meticulous about his sex life. He, selfish bastard that he was, kept track of it all so that, on the off-chance he did get sick, he would know exactly who was going to kiss their dick goodbye. He couldn’t help but feel as though he was being mom-ed by Divya, not that that was a bad thing, just unfamiliar. “Yeah, maybe if I’d hooked up with someone super sketch, maybe. But not for your normal club guys.”
Divya had no idea where her need to look after and take care of everyone had come from but it was something she had done ever since childhood. Back then she had also been spectacularly bossy, always telling her older brother off for any sort of reckless behaviour. Divya could only hope others didn’t see her in that light anymore. “That’s great. Anyway, I hope you’ve been well on all fronts.”

“Excruciating? No, I wouldn’t say that. I kind of want to say invigorating, but I don’t think it would be that either.” Ciara laughed and picked out a red velvet cupcake out the box for her. “Here you go, I think they may actually be some of my best work.”
“Is it the power you feel like you get with it? Like you have some control over the poor folk with subpar maths skills?” Divya joked, still grinning away. “Thank you so much. I haven’t had a proper cupcake in what feels like ages and these ones are really very pretty.”

“Teach me to spend my first year here cooped up in my dorm and studying rather than getting out and seeing how London lives,” he chuckled, inhaling the wonderful aroma of the shop. There really was nothing like it in the world, admitted Josh. “So these vouchers, are they free or what?” he asked, puzzled how it connected back to her protest.
“Oh, yeah, you’ve missed some great coffee, my friend. Although I’m sure there’s pretty marvellous coffee to be had in the States, too. Probably better, actually,” she admitted, grinning. “There are some free ones, yeah. I think you get a phone app and then you can get points and exchange those for free coffee and other stuff? But the vouchers you get do expire and cannot be used once they’re, well, not valid anymore. Which is commonsense, really, and a ridiculous reason for anyone to go on a really rude rant, don’t you think?”

I can’t imagine that,” he grinned, especially at her blush before shrugging. “Promise me if I ever get put in ICU that you will keep these lovely nails painted shiny black.” It was meant to be a joke, but in actuality that could happen to him. You never know. “You do a good job though, Divya, I’m sure a lot of people that get out of ICU can vouch for that. If you run into a doctor named Murphy King? He’s a friend of mine, feel free to give him shit. He’s getting married too soon. Cats are so god damn independent, it’s like all they need is food, water and a litterbox and they do their own thing, it’s nice until they start hiding things.” Hearing she had family over, Jackson smiled a little. “I bet that was fun. Me?Nah, I actually stayed at home and worked, it was a busy night logging things for my boss. I wish it had been sparkly.”
“Oh, it has definitely happen. What do the kids say? Right. I have no chill, that’s what that is. If there’s a confrontation, I turn into my mother and get very mouthy.” While Divya would’ve liked to be able to handle her temperament a little bit better, it was nothing she really disliked about herself. Sometimes you just needed to get good and angry. “Got it, I will keep a bottle of varnish on me at all times. Although that’s no an invitation; you better not end up in the ICU,” she noted, squinting her eyes as if trying to drive a point home. “Oh well, I do my best. It’s... It’s an interesting work environment, sometimes you feel quite removed from the rest of the world, you know? Murphy? I do know him! Well, I don’t know him very well but yes, we’ve talked before. I think he’s far too nice for any shit, though, don’t you? Hmm, that sounds frustrating. Did the cat ever hide anything very important?” the question was asked with a soft burst of laughter, one she didn’t even try to mask. “We could always celebrate the year changing at a later date. Surely that’s not against any rules?”

“Yes, that is me. I am the reason thousands of teenagers across the country stress over math exams.” She laughed. “I have vanilla, chocolate and red velvet, take your pick.”
“Oh dear. It must be excruciating, knowing the like of you are the cause of all those sleepless nights. However, I feel like they would forgive you if they had the chance to taste your cupcakes,” Divya smiled before pursing her full lips together. “Red velvet, I think. I never actually make them myself so I feel like I must do it now that I have the chance.”

“The point is, there are prettier people out there. And are you sure? You did tell her all about me, right?” There was nothing to tell about Florence that would sound terrible on paper, but she could bet meeting her in person would change everything into everything bad. That’s just who Florence always thought she was as a person. But with Divya’s convincing and her own need to find a place in the big city that was London, she shrugged in approval. “You have me sold. I guess.”
“Yes, there are people out there who are prettier than smarter than us. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t feel like we’re also pretty and smart.” It was something that had been taught to her by her mother, a woman of great substance and confidence, the sort of person who had no time for insecurities or self-hatred. Divya could only hope she would one day be half the woman her mother was. “Not all, no. But the important things, the sort of things you would tell your mother before bringing a friend over. She knows you’re nervous and not entirely comfortable with the idea. I assure you they’ll be on their best behaviour,” she hurried to promise, a bright smile spreading across her face as Florence promised to make an appearance. “Thank you! It’ll be great.”

“Exactly, I mean, especially in the inner city, I’m honestly in awe of them and their ability to do that everyday - though I haven’t done it even once but I’m sure it’s enjoyable or they wouldn’t be doing it. Right?” That’s what she hoped anyway. Taking a deep breath, Brigitte laughed. “I’m so sorry for just bombarding you with that, I’ve just been holding it in since it happened and well, I guess I finally just exploded. My apologies.”
Divya nodded, deep in thought as she mulled over the matter she had never really considered. “I am sure there are people who, well, who don’t really love it but do it because they need the money. Which, to be fair, is true to many people in a wide variety of jobs. I just really hope no one feels like it’s the only option for them if it’s not what they really want. Don’t even worry about it! I do the same thing all the time. And it’s an interesting subject so I am not too bothered or upset.”

“It’s okay,” David said, reaching over and putting a hand on her bicep for a moment, giving her a reassuring squeeze. “Whenever something like this happens, it’s a very common thing to be in shock in the middle of it all.” Offering her a more friendly smile, it wasn’t that out of the ordinary to show sympathy to those who were around the crime scene and let them know that they were still, and would always be, safe. “Are you okay? You didn’t get hurt or anything, did you?”
“I wouldn’t necessarily call it shock. I just... didn’t expect it. I don’t think anyone would have.” Divya wasn’t entirely sure why she felt the need to deny just how scared she’d been but for some reason it seemed almost necessary. “I’m fine. Absolutely fine,” she repeated, mostly to calm herself down. “You handled that very well. Well, that was completely redundant, wasn’t it? It’s your job, of course you would handle it well. I’m sorry.”

“It would, yes. And takeaway coffee, in general, is ridiculously expensive. Which is exactly why I should cut back,” she mused and rubbed the back of her neck. “Good, good. I don’t think I care for those people very much.”
