From high-end fashion designers like Stella McCartney and Vera Wang to independent clothing and home textiles makers, indigo patterned textiles are making a splashy come back. These dresses, pillow cases, and cloth tableware have all been dyed using a set of traditional Japanese resist-dyeing techniques called shibori, which has hit the market full swing as one of the trendiest fabrics in fashion today.
Well over a 1000 years old, the modern shibori methods we use today stay close to their traditional roots when the technique first entered Japan from China during the 8th century. The term shibori derives from word shiboru meaning “to wring, squeeze, and press.” It is a range of techniques that involve manipulating, folding, stitching, binding the cloth before dyeing in order to create distinctive geometric and floral textures.
