Sawyer knew a thing or two about dealing with monsters on the inside. You don’t spend years in guerilla desert combat without picking up your fair share of scars, and what the medication couldn’t numb, the booze made you forget. 

Okay, maybe that wasn’t really ‘dealing’ with anything, but it had worked for his old man, hadn’t it? Not to mention it kept him from blowing his brains out. More than once.

He cast Andrea a side glance. “Test, huh? I didn’t peg you as religious.”

  Right there is the exact reason why they work so well together. They had a certain level of understanding. Andrea found a way to deal with it. Torn from her opportunity to opt out, she found that saving the lives of others, trying to make a difference was enough to keep her from going insane. Hey -- maybe she was a solder in another life because the more she had a knife or handgun in her hand, the better she became at this war against the undead. It could just be determination.

quick rant, because this pops up a lot and it’s 2014 and i’m tired of seeing it:

andrea gave beth the opportunity to “opt out” because she empathized with her situation and wanted to let beth decide to live or die by herself; she wanted beth to have full agency in the most fundamental decision she would ever make.

andrea’s agency—her ability to decide whether she wanted to live or not—was taken away from her.  she was not allowed to opt out peacefully, in a way that wouldn’t hurt anyone else.  andrea was forced—quite literally emotionally bullied—into staying alive in a world that was cruel and vicious and awful.

she didn’t want the same thing to happen to beth, if beth did not want to be alive. 

andrea was not being cruel; she was not being callous; she was not trying to maintain control of the situation.

andrea wanted to make sure that beth had the agency to make her choice; that is literally it
