I'll make this quick–

Today being RTC day, I wanted to remind y'all that Constance is one of the most beautifully written teens ever and the way some of you portray her is not it. It's totally okay to not like her as a character, but you shouldn't reduce her character to "the nice one" or "Ocean's best friend".

She's sweet and caring and mean and helpless and hopeful and lonely and selfless and funny and creative and messy and empathetic.

She is the heart of the musical. Show her some respect.

Constance is the representation of a messy girl battling with mental illness and people pleasing to her core.

The resentment she builds towards her parents because of how they raised her, while still knowing they were good people. Her throwing out her "nicest girl in homeroom" award every year. The few times we see her true personality come out and her feeling like she has to shrink herself down smaller and smaller to be palatable for other people and fit into this box of "nice" that everyone puts on her. No one ever truly realizing who she was until death, and even then no one alive ever having ever known her fully. Her self destructive behavior prior to her death because she wanted to feel something real, to break out of that stereotype while also feeding into her negative view of herself.

Even the beginning of her song, comparing life to a jawbreaker that loses all flavor and color and yet you still keep going without purpose or meaning, you keep breaking yourself into pieces until there's nothing left, only to finally find release and express who she really is? The fact that Ricky handed her the mic so she could finally express everything she stuffed down for years???

Yes, she was nice, and yes she did find pleasure in the simple things in life but there was so much more to her. The fact that the most significant part of her life that showed her just how much it actually meant was her death? The fact that she was laughing as the cyclone was crashing???

She is SO MUCH MORE than people make her out to be.
