jacks was simply terrified, because he loved evangeline and wanted to save her. he was really suffering from separating her from himself.

i also love how she says that both jacks and eva have reached a level of intimacy, affection and enormous love. the two of them talking about their feelings, almost as a couple, at the end of the book, is an important step for both of them.
