So, during my playthrough I took a few caps of things that Gundam said that interested me, and I do wanna clarify that if I make mistakes here, feel free to let me know. This was my first playthrough and I don’t have a ton of knowledge regarding the series aside from the basics. However, I mean... Gundam says interesting things all the time, but he tends to allude to other things through his words (which I have more thoughts on but I’ll get to that some other time)
He claims he was born from a human and a demon, which obviously implies he’s talking about his parents. Firstly, I’d like to reference what he said to Hinata in their conversations. If you choose ‘Your mom’s an awful cook.’ He mentions that, despite its dissatisfactory taste, his mother would cry if he did not finish the food she cooked, so he’d eat it to make her feel better. Because of this line, I’d assume the “demon” he’s referring to is his father. So, from this, I’d take it his relationship with his father is not good, and perhaps, doesn’t even exist at all, considering the remark about him being shunned. In regards to this blog’s canon, I am going to say that his parents were once married, but eventually divorced due to his father’s abusive habits toward his mother. This ties into his one line in a conversation with Hinata about how everything that is able to talk will, in time, betray you. (This also explains his fondness and attachment to animals, for they cannot speak or stab you in the back).
Because he says he was shunned by both his father and his mother, I’m going to take it that his parents were divorced when he was still young. Perhaps around the age of five or six years old. He remembers some of things his father did, and he remembers when he left, but he grew to live without him. Now, the reason he says he was also shunned by his mother is because he grew up with a single parent. He knows that she was forced to spent the bulk of her time working in order to provide for him, but while she worked for him, what he also needed was someone to be there for him, someone to take care of him. But, because life gets in the way, he never received that treatment. I also want to say his mother struggled very much and probably had several dealings with grief, frustration, and depression, so Gundam knows what that looks like, and would often feel sympathy for his struggling mother. He loves her very much. I believe he even went as far to join Hope’s Peak Academy so that he could succeed and then provide for her, allow her to live a simpler life, and be able to take care of herself when she needed to.
This is the next line he says, which really ties into some of the information I mentioned before. Him and his mother did have a lot of money, and she wasn’t around a lot. She had money for the food and for their rent, but never enough to spend on something that wasn’t a necessity. I think it’s interesting that he says ‘nobody has ever bought me a toy’ instead of ‘nobody has ever given me a toy.’ The word choice implies that it had to do with finances.
