I think I like riol because he gives PS1 era final fantasy for me. he should have been a temporary playable character, maybe during a sequence where you play as alphinaud escaping the banquet

(obviously the easiest expansion to make into a game is heavensward, just move the snowcloak stuff to the very start of 3.0 to give it more heft, and then you're doing kind of a tactics ogre thing where a lot of the main characters are just temporarily on hiatus from the more important heroic plot happening next door. playable banquet sequence is a backstory reveal a la cloud's playable flashback post midgar)
