i remember visiting one of those lecture with the industry experts on ux/ui design in uni and the lecturer was going through the slides with examples and about one she said that it’s a dark pattern and we don’t do that and then the very next slide was a screenshot of a feature from the app of one of the biggest banks and she was like well this is also kind of a dark pattern but it wooorrrks so it’s fine. and i walked out soon afterwards

#it’s also interesting to think how even the training before entering the workforce cultivates particulsr values and worldviews #so much cheering about getting people to behave in particular ways and so much emphasis on the stats #very surveillance capitalism mentality. very illuminating to see it so embrace #and for context the surveillance capitalism theory is not just about surveillance to be clear #it’s also about this imperative to get people to exhibit particular behaviours #and in zuboff’s view (the author of this theory) it’s more important than affecting people’s will and actual opinions #and in this example it’s applicable #(on the whole though i prefer the data colonialism theory for the analysis these processes bc there is a very significant ideological #dimension to it. not that zuboff doesn’t consider the justification models but to her the ambition is to change people’s actions and not #minds it makes sense if you want to emphasize something in your work #but ultimately these things aren’t separate)#anyway #a blog as a diary

tech companies appear to be labouring under the delusion that users who click on the wrong program by accident because the button's placement has changed will naturally find themselves using and enjoying whatever feature they moved into the previous location of that program's button

#i mean ux/ui designers very literally need to prove that their work has results #very often it doesn’t matter if the user actually enjoys it. the goals are usually set in terms of increasing the amount of clicks #on some feature or visits to some page #that’s something the developer gets feedback on #if the outraged users spam the comments in the app store yes that’s also feedback that gets through #but very often these changes are not implemented bc the users ask for it #it can be very simply just bc some people need to justify their usefulness to the employer #which is understandable but that’s why you get all the updates no one has asked for #the problem is larger of course #you can talk about the standard mentality regarding how every company just needs to implement every single trend

the thing about people who use ai is that they will always start talking completely unprompted about how everyone uses it and you should too if you spend long enough if in a conversation with them, and my answers at this point are very short and baffling to them bc it’s all like. i prefer thinking and understanding. yes even when it’s hard. i like having control over the things i do. “but- but everyone uses it!” and?
