The Bowl-Bearer Princess. Volume 1

An Akahon - or “red-bound” picture books for young readers during the Edo period  (1603–1867)- published between 1700 to 1799. The story tells the life of Hachikazuki hime, a princess whose head is stuck with a bowl filled with treasures. The bowl was placed on her head by her mother when she was a little girl.

It is one of the first asian 'square like comic' type of visual narrative, bringing inspiration to the later manga movement that would exist.

As a portuguese native, this painting is very nostalgic to me. It shows one of the unique geographic locations of portugal: Alentejo, Beja, where you have miles and miles of yellow wheat. Its truly a sight to see, I reccomend. Small villages in this part of Portugal have always been isolated, but during our dictatorship with Salazar, some villages were hired by PIDE (opression police) to travel to neighbour villages to see if anyone was doing or saying anything against the regime. It has been a long time, these villages still have a lot of old population, but you might find that a lot of people from the hired villages from PIDE are proper evil and cruel. Animals being poisoned, fires starting, etc.. its a bit dramatic. (These stories are personal to people I know, so take with a grain of salt).

The organic contour that defines the human body and the special attention to the smallest of details on the clothes are characteristics of the authentic Mayan style, a work that uses shape in a way differently than the rest of the world at the time due to the pre-colombian tribes not being connected to the rest of the world.

I honestly love it a lot.
