Luke almost couldn’t believe it was finally happening. He would have a little sister. Legally. He already saw Maggie as his little sister, but now it would be all official. He leaned against the door frame, smiling at her as she asked for reassurance. “You look perfect, trust me. Today’s gonna be great. How’re you feeling?”

“Nervous,” she replied, honestly. “I’ve been this far before and it fell through because I was showing signs of magic and kind of knocked tables over. They were so weirded out that they sent be back to the group home on the day I was supposed to be adopted. I was nine. I know that Dads would never do that, I just, I’m always scared that at the last minute it’ll implode on itself.”

“I don’t know. There’s probably a spell for that, right? Like, what’s that one, Bombarda or something?” Josie rolled her eyes at the mention of Dallas. “Can we not talk about her? Obviously yeah, she’s annoying, like always.”

“What is your thing with her anyway?” Maggie questioned.

Cameron sighed. He wasn’t in the mood for this. “I wasn’t crapping on any one’s dreams. You asked me a question, and I gave an honest answer based on my own personal experience. Not my fault you took it so personally.”

Maggie was looking for the books she needed when she went back to school when she saw the boy out of the corner of her eye. Her small smile immediately dropped. “Here to crap on my dreams again?”

Magdalene straightened out her dress, looking in the mirror on the back of her closet door. This had been a long time coming, with many adoptions that had failed for her, it was finally happening today. There was always that fear though, that even this would fall through. She never felt like a part of a family since her biological family, till the Gardner’s. She heard a knock on the door. “Come in,” she said. She smiled when she saw her foster brother, soon to be brother, at the door. “Tell me I look okay? I want to look perfect for today.”

“Of course they don’t,” Luke shook his head, pulling Maggie into a side-hug as they walked. “Obviously I’ve never been in the system, so I don’t know what it’s like, but maybe that’s what he feels they want? You know, maybe his experience has been that his foster parents want to be his only parents, if that makes sense. And you’ve had a different experience with the system than he has. But no, I don’t think they replace your parents, even if you’re adopted.”

“I get bad foster homes, I’ve been in some myself, I just, it really hurt that he said that,” Maggie replied. “I just don’t understand how you can’t give people a chance. I gave your Dads a chance.”
