BIOGRAPHY

The first of the Rhodes children and one to always know how to make an entrance, Maggie made her debut into the world on her father’s birthday; conveniently getting him out of the party. Ever since, she has been one to know how to get the attention she wanted from crying to get her mom during her performances on Broadway and even ending up as a child on Broadway herself. She’d join her mom on stage a few times growing up; ending when she was thirteen. During this time, she was extremely close to her mother and wanted to be exactly like her. She remembers this time of her life being happy, especially with the addition of her siblings, but to her, she felt all good things need to come to an end.

For her, the ending happened when she was thirteen. Her mom had been drinking and there was an emergency which led her to drive. The car crashed and Maggie became very scared. For a long time, she refused to even get into the car and then refused to do so with her mother. She started acting out towards her mom and even trying to pour out liquor bottles to try to get her to stop drinking. She was very angry towards all this and it constantly showed.

The summer before high school, she demanded to go to a real school instead of being home school. So, the family moved permanently to Bridgeport and she started going to school. Finally having a regular social life she craved, Maggie met Eddie King and several others in town and she quickly became decently popular, but she was also one to skip school and sneak out at night to go to parties. Her and Eddie started dating and they had a happy relationship up until graduation when she broke up with him, but only because she was leaving town for college.

WIthout word to her family, Maggie took off to Portland, Oregon a few days after her high school graduation and started working while she waited for classes to start. After a few days, she let her family know where she was and would rarely call for a while. She started college in the fall going with an English major. She focused on her schooling, rarely going home at all, and after she graduated, she lived in Portland permanently.

Over the years, she wrote a book called Magnolia Grove that was loosely based on her family and Bridgeport about a town of magical beings. It became popular and she wrote a few more and quickly became a best selling author. During this time, she met an accountant named Mike and the two started dating. After a year, they got married. However, the second she was married to him, things went downhill. He wanted her to stop writing and stop contact with her family. He hated that she made more than him and was becoming famous. This led to a lot of arguing and after a year of marriage, she left him.

While trying to get a divorce, Maggie headed home to Bridgeport and bought a house. She started being around her family again, but still wasn’t as close to her mom as she once was. Now home, she reconnected with Eddie and got close to him as a friend again. After a drunken night, they started hooked up and it resulted in them having their first daughter, Audrey. They started co-parenting and Maggie continued writing her books and also trying to divorce Mike, but he kept putting it off. A few years passed and her and Eddie hooked up again, having another daughter named Grace.

After Grace was born, Maggie got a Netflix deal and her books were becoming a TV series. On top of writing the fourth book of her series, she was also helping write the script for the series and was trying to focus on her divorce too. While that wasn’t going through, her success was and eventually, she bought the old lighthouse in town after the caretaker passed. She kept it running while doing everything she did with her job.

It was in August of 2021 when things got a little worse for her. The show was between seasons and she was trying to finish the last book of her series and because she finally had time again, she started pushing harder for her divorce. She would go out to Portland to talk to him and come back upset. This led to her drinking to get worse to the point she was drinking almost every moment she was awake. She was angry and just wanted her divorce and was taking it out on everyone. It was at the end of March that it came to a climax. She got news from her mom she got MIke to sign the papers and raced to her childhood home. As she was almost there, she swerved as a car came out and tore up her parents lawn. Luckily everyone was okay, but this was a wake up call she needed to stop drinking.

Since then, she has been working on getting sober as well as promoting her new book and writing the second season of her show. It was all going okay, it seemed, and then she found out she was pregnant by a guy she’s kinda been seeing. She was nervous to say anything at first and after telling him, the two fought and haven’t spoken since. Maggie isn’t sure what she’s going to do with him, but she knows in her heart she’s going to raise this baby.

Brady was nervous about all of this, and probably would be during every appointment they had, but he was trying to push that aside. He had already almost let his fears sabotage everything once so he wanted to do better, like he had promised both Maggie and her mother. He squeezed her hand as he stared at the monitor. It seemed so surreal to think that he was going to have a son. He shook his head. “No, those are overrated.” he agreed. “But I’m sure you’re mom will have both of our heads if she isn’t the first one to know.” he joked before nodding. “That’s good to hear.” his smile faded when she mentioned family stuff was going on. “Oh. Is everything alright?” he asked with concern. He didn’t want her getting stressed out. “Yeah. We’re good.” he nodded. “I mean…this is all very strange, I’m not gonna lie, but it’s happening.” he chuckled lightly running a hand through his hair.

“Just a bit.” She said with a smile before nodding. “I think you’re right about that.” She said, happy to hear him joke. It was a gesture of how things were before everything came down around them and found herself missing it when she was with him. Even when she was without him. At his concern, she wasn’t sure if she should tell him, but she wanted to be honest with him and talk to him like she used to. She missed that too. “My mom has to get a liver transplant. So its been...” Stressful, hard, too much. All the words she wanted to say, but instead she just shrugged instead of actually talking to him. “That it is.” Maggie agreed and looked back at the screen. “Can we talk after this?” She asked and looked back up at him. “It’s nothing serious, I’m just not great at talking when a nurse can walk in at any moment. And I...” She looked away from him. “I’ve missed you.”

“It’s weird to think accidents can be happy,” she pointed out though she still had a smile on her face, “but let me tell you, I love being an aunt and so more babies to be an aunt to? Sign me right up for that.” She grinned at her cousin. She knew that she wasn’t exactly an aunt but not having any siblings of her own, it was the closest thing she would ever have to being an aunt and she loved every moment of it. “I’m happy too,” she said as she smiled when Maggie returned, “All of the options are going to have to be looked at,” she let out a soft laugh, shaking her head, “starting with loads and loads of fries.”

“Noted. At least I got a free babysitter.” She teased her and was glad that her cousin was close to her to be like an aunt to her kids. She loved Pia like she was another sister and loved having her in her life. “Good.” She said with a smile. She really just wanted Pia happy and would support her no matter what. “Exactly. And definitely the fries. And onion rings. And even the loaded baked potato.” She said with a grin.

Brady nodded. It had been a long time since he had last been through this and things had changed since then. He looked at the doctor as they explained that they could try to determine the sex of the baby and looked at the small screen. He felt a mix of emotion as he saw some movement on the screen and it started to sink in that this was real. He felt a sudden relief wash over him as they said they would check for the heartbeat. His hand reached for Maggie’s without a second thought. He had promised her he would be there for her no matter what the outcome was. He heard the sound on the machine. Hearing the sound of the heartbeat made him feel more hopeful. He stared at the screen until he heard that the baby was a boy. “A boy?” he looked at Maggie. Brady couldn’t express how it felt to know that he was finally going to have the son he should have had.   “Wow… I mean, I guess it’s not hard to tell.” he chuckled a little. The doctor left them alone for a moment to check the results of something. he squeezed her hand. “I guess we don’t need a gender reveal party.” he joked before he let out a breath. “How are you doing?” he asked her. “I’ll talk to the doctor after this about any other test we should do.” he suggested. He wanted to make sure they took every precaution they could.

As Brady’s hand took hers, she felt a relief and gave his hand a squeeze. After everything she had felt this awkwardness around them. It wasn’t like she was expecting them to be together or anything, but they weren’t how they were before all this and she missed that. She missed the friend she gained during her darkest period. So having their hands intertwined made all of this worry and fear she was feeling pause because she knew she wasn’t alone. Hearing that the baby was a boy confirmed her suspicions. She knew this was different than when she was pregnant with the girls. She just stared at the ultrasound machine and smiled, giving his hand a squeeze as he joked. After the doctor left, she kept staring at the monitor and then her eyes moved to look into his. “Good, because I’m not into those. I like to blurt it out in random conversations.” She said and shrugged. “Pregnancy wise, I’m good. The morning sickness has gotten better, but there’s some family things goin going on.” She said and shrugged before nodding. “Okay. I talked to them a little bit, but you can talk to her.” She said before just looking at him. “How do you feel? We’re still good, right?”

“Oh shit, that’s awesome he sells some of your books too,” he knew Maggie was talented, even if he hadn’t read any of her books himself. He wasn’t that big into reading at the end of the day. Braxton nodded his head to her words. “I may be pretty young but I get complicated. He had spent a long time dating Verity, on and off, deciding what was good for him at the end of the day. It had been a complicated situation and some days, it still was. Years had passed since they had dated but Braxton would be lying if he didn’t still have feelings for her sometimes. “I’m glad things are gettin’ better for ya. You deserve a good life, Maggie.”

“It is.” It interesting how much her and Brady’s lives were intertwined before she actually took the time to meet him. Or, more yell at him but same thing. She took a deep breath before nodding. “I don’t think complicated has an age limit, unfortunately. Let’s just hope yours isn’t close to mine.” She smiled a little at him. “I know I’m like your boss or whatever, but I’m here to listen if you ever need it.” After all, over the time she had met and talked with the younger man, she looked at him fondly and like a younger brother. She could see now how her mom was so close to so many people. “Thanks. So do you, Braxton.”

“So not that long before me, then.” It was a tough to come to terms with the fact that their mom might not find a donor, and Liv was trying not to think about that. It was too much for her, and she was trying to be positive. “Are you sure you’re okay? I don’t want you to feel like you can’t talk to me about how you’re feeling. I know you want to be strong, but you don’t have to be,” she said, looking at her sister. “This is difficult on all of us.” Their family just couldn’t seem to escape bad things. “I wouldn’t say I’m handling it well, I have my moments where I cry for her but I’m trying to stay optimistic,” she frowned. “I hope she will, Maggie. It’s scary to think about what will happen if she doesn’t.” Then she wrapped her arm around Maggie’s shoulder and gave her a squeeze. “At least we have each other, no matter what.”

“Not long, no.” She said and kept staring off into the distance to not really look at her sister at the moment. She was staying quiet while Liv asked if she was really okay and that she didn’t have to be strong. She knew lately she was trying to be more open about things, but now she felt like she had to be the strong one again. She was the oldest. She had to carry it all. “I’m okay. I promise.” Maggie lied and finally let her eyes fall onto her sister again, finding it hard to keep the front up she wanted to keep. “But noted. You can always talk to me.” She reached out and touched Liv’s arm before rubbing it softly. “I know, but it’s going to be fine.” She said, more for herself once again, and wrapped her arm around her sister as well. “Don’t think about it. Nothing is going to happen. We’ll find a donor and she’ll be fine.” Maggie said firmly before kissing her sister’s head. “Always.”

“It’s a murder mystery novel.” he shrugged, extending the book out in the direction of the other, showing her the cover of the book in his hand. “I - my dad and I started trading books to each other for a few months until he got to where he couldn’t read them anymore. Then I would just read to him.” he smiled. “I just, I’ve always liked the idea of doing a secret book exchange and seeing what other people think about it. But, honestly saying that out loud it’s a little silly. Maybe I should just talk to city hall about starting up a book club?” he sighed. “But honestly, I know what it’s like to be asked to do work related things when you’re off, and I’m sorry I gave you that impression.” he smiled.

She nodded as she took the book and looked it over. She honestly liked murder mystery and was thinking about dabbling in that now that her book series had come to an end. Maggie stayed quiet as the man talked about his father and she smiled for a moment. It made her wonder if she was going to be doing the same to her mom. “It’s not silly.” She told him as she waved the book around for a moment. “My mom actually is part of a book club. A lot of people in town, actually. I can get information for you, if you want.” She offered up to him before shaking his head. “No, this isn’t really my job, per say. I own it, yes, but I let other’s do stuff.” She told him. “I’m an author. Maggie Rhodes.” She offered her name in case he heard of her young adult fantasy books, Magnolia Grove. “Aren’t you the principal of the elementary school?”

Leanne nodded, a strained smile on her lips at Maggie’s words. She was glad to see things between them seemed to be better lately. More understanding and less fighting. She was doing her part to show Maggie that she loved her and was on her side. She’d always wanted to be there for her, and now more than ever she wanted then to be alright. “Are you okay?” She asked after Maggie sat her down. She was more concerned with how Maggie was going to deal with this than being sick. What she just told her wasn’t easy. “Sweetie. Slow down a minute.” Leanne took Maggie’s face in her hands. “You’re pregnant. Even if you weren’t I’m not sure I’d want too even if if you could. You’ve got the girls, and this baby.. you’re so young,” They’d have to match, and the surgery was risky. Leanne couldn’t handle anything happening to one of her children. “I know you want to fix this.. to fix me, and we’re sure as hell going to try. I did this, I know I did. All those things you said to me, when you were upset well they were true. I did fail you all and this is the price I’m going to pay for it. Don’t let yourself end up like me.” She couldn’t hold it back and began to sob right along with her. “Honey, that means so much to me.. really.. I hope it doesn’t come to that. I know I am loved, but no one owes me anything.” Hearing Maggie talk about how she would pay for a liver if not one town wanted to help made her cry harder. “I want you to know how you mean to me. All those fights we have, they seem so silly now. Your my first born daughter and I love you just as much if not more than your brother and sister. I always will. If I’m not here, I want you to tell that little one about me, okay? Don’t let the girls forget.”

Maggie didn’t even hear her mom ask her if she was okay. She actually didn’t register anything until her mom book her face in her hands and she finally looked into her mom’s eyes. “Then we’ll find someone who can fucking do it.” She said sternly. “And I’m not young. I’m almost forty and baby or no baby, I would give you any part of me.” She said before she sat back and moved her mom’s hands from her face, but keeping them in her hands before shaking her head. “No. You can’t believe the things I said when I was upset. This is not a price you have to pay. This isn’t karma catching up with you. This is something we are going to fix and there’s no reason to think it’s just a random occurrence.” All of this was more for herself. She wasn’t going to face the fact that anything bad was going to happen. She was sticking to the thought that things were going to be okay. “It’s not owing you anything. It’s what I’m going to do.” Maggie said, her stubbornness coming out. However, she felt a pain in her chest as her mom started talking about loving her and not letting her kids forget her. She stood up and moved from her and shook her head as she paced the kitchen. “Stop it. I love you, but... stop.” She said, fighting back tears. “You are going to be fine, okay? The kids won’t forget you and you can tell this baby about you yourself. Everything is going to be fine.”

“Yeah, the past doesn’t get to be changed,” which in part, was probably for the better though there were times in which Pia wished she could have. There were times in everyone’s life that they wished they could go back and change the past - but it just wasn’t possible. “Oh, me? Definitely not,” she laughed, shaking her head at the thought, “I want kids, but not right now. I mean, Briar just asked me to be his girlfriend, I don’t think kids are on the table quite yet.” She teased Maggie with a shake of her head. “You got it.” Pia headed toward a table that was in a less busy area so that they would be able to hear each other talk. She set her bag down at the end of the booth and slid into one, awaiting Maggie’s return.

Maggie nodded at her cousins words, even though they both probably wished the past could be changed. Lord knew Maggie did for more reasons than one and the happiness of her cousin was one of those reasons. She laughed at the objection of Pia being pregnant and nodded. “Hey, they weren’t on the table for me either, and now look at me.” She said and placed a hand on her small, but there bump. “Two kids and one on the way, all happy accidents. Congrats, though. I’m happy you’re happy with Briar.” She said before she went to grab the menus and returned to her cousin, sitting at the booth. “I told them to give us a few before we order so we can fully decide on the plethora of food we order.”

Since finding out about Leanne’s medical issue, Liv was very concerned and knew she needed to talk to her sister, not only for comfort but to make sure she she was okay as well. They always had each other, and Liv knew Maggie internalized a lot of things as an effort to be strong. As their kids played at the park together, Liv looked over at Maggie. “So…how long have you known about mom?” She asked curiously. “I feel like I was the last one to know. I understand why, but it still bothers me a little bit, you know?” However, that didn’t really matter now. “How are you holding up with everything? I can’t believe this is happening…”

To say Maggie was terrified about what could possibly happen to their mother, she did what she normally did an held in everything. She wanted to reach out to Liv and see how she was handling it, but honestly, she wasn’t sure if Liv knew yet. Last she knew, she didn’t and she wasn’t sure if she was the one who could just break the news to her. So when Liv wanted to have the kids play at the park, she had a feeling she knew now. After the kids were settled on the toys, she looked over at her sister and shrugged. Right after the fourth.” She said. “I don’t know how long they knew before we did, but around there.” She said. “I’m okay. How are you handling it?” She asked, pulling the classic diversion she did to take care of her siblings first. “I know, but it’s going to be fine. She’ll find a donor and it’ll be okay.”

“As long as it is fun, that’s what matters,” Braxton nodded his head in agreement. As Maggie went on, he raised his brows at the thought. “No shit, huh?” The words blurted from his mouth before he had a second to think, “Not in a bad way,” he waved his hand, not wanting her to think he thought it was bad. “He’s got the hobby store right? Some of my siblings like goin’ there, so I try gettin’ them gifts from it when I can.” Braxton told Maggie, “Y’all happy about it?” He questioned, “If that’s not too personal of a question,” the last thing he wanted to do was step on any toes.

“That’s true.” She said before she watched his reaction and couldn’t help but laugh a little at it. “Hey, I was feeling it being all sorts of ways at first so you’re fine.” Maggie told the younger man. “He does. He sells some of my books too. And neighbors with my parents.” She shrugged as she looked at him before smiling. “It’s not. And yeah, we are. Now.” She said and pursed her lips for a moment, thinking how much she wanted to tell Braxton. “It was complicated, but things are better.”

Despite the news of his wife’s sickness, Malcolm enjoyed the celebration his children set up for them. Even though, throughout the night, Mal was praying this was not the last year he got celebrated with his wife. With the dinner over, the grandbabies and kids all came back to the Rhodes house for more time alone as a family. After their song, Mal sat his guitar near Lea’s ukulele and kept his eyes on her while she spoke. He eagerly kissed her back, nipping her bottom lip a little as their kiss ended. Shooting her a wink, Mal grinned at his wife. “I agree with you, mammy. Today was great. And I honestly had no idea. You know I’m always the last to know anything.” He stated and chuckled. “I mean, I can’t decide with the kids though… You do like to control things, ma.” Mal mused, slipping another wink and smirk her way. When Olivia asked for smores, Mal’s head immediately nodded. “Oh, the odds are great, squirt.” He said, glancing at Liv then Maggie. “You two watch that one.” He joked, pointing at Leanne before walking to their house to gather the needed supplies for smores.

Hearing Maggie, Leanne nodded. “Yea.. You get that honest from me..” She laughed. “ Hey! I do not always freak out.. I enjoy the odd surprise… In my defense. I thought the seater forgot about us.” She defended, knowing she was in a losing battle here. “I think your father deserves this most of all for putting up with my high strung tendencies all these years. I’m a lucky woman landing this hunk.” She rubbed her nose against his, then kissed him several times bordering a make out session she knew her kids would hate. She wanted this night to last forever, pushing away her fears of this being possibly her last. “You kids enjoy those. I’m still stuffed from all that cake.” She watched malcolm go before turning to the girls. “Did you hear him? Pshhh…I’m fine.” She had eaten an edible earlier though. “Thank you both, for everything. I haven’t seen your father smile like since everything happened. It all meant so much..” She added, struggling not to get emotional. “So serious question. Will you help me push your father in the pool later?”

At her parents kissing, she scrunched up her nose and shook her head. “Gross. There’s kids present.” She teased more and rubbed Grace’s back more. The oldest child stayed quiet as she stared into the fire while her sister requested s’mores and their dad went to go get some. “You’re also not pregnant, so.” Maggie teased again before her face fell a little bit and she hid her face in her daughter’s hair, acting like she was just cuddling her more. “You know we’d do anything for you both.” She spoke softly and her eyes kept just staring at the fire. It was easier for her at the moment to do so. “I’m glad you’re feeling fine.” She said before straightening up and taking a breath. “I don’t know. Sounds more like a grandkid job to me.”

Brady was already somewhat worried about about Maggie and about the baby but he was trying not to focus on things that could go wrong. He had also seen the date of conception so there was no question in his mind anymore that it was his baby anymore. Still, he wanted things to be good between them, if they were going to do this together. He nodded and sat down next to the table. “Okay, good.” he said. “Are we going to be able to see the baby, and tell what it is? Or is it too soon?” he asked. He knew Maggie was only a couple months along.

“I think we do that at twenty weeks?” She said and looked at the doctor before the woman shook her head. “While its a little early, we could try to see if we can tell the sex of the baby.” She said as she finished getting Maggie prepped and put the gel on her stomach. She took a deep breath and her eyes focused on the monitor as the doctor moved the wand around to find the baby. Finally, the image of their baby appeared and a smile filled Maggie’s face. The doctor looked the baby over before saying everything was looking good. “And let’s check the heartbeat.” She said and turned the sound on. Their baby’s heartbeat filled the room and it made tears come to Maggie’s eyes. “Sounds good too.” She said before she moved the imagine and looked at the baby more as she turned the sound down. “And it looks like we can tell the sex. You guys are having a healthy baby boy.”

Leanne strummed her fingers over her ukulele in time with her husband as finished singing the last verse of a fleetwood Mac song to him. Lunch at La Maree had been a wonderful surprise for Leanne. She wasn’t expecting a room full of people she loved from all over town to be there to celebrate her and her husband. It was an afternoon she would never forget. After lots of laughs, food, games and so many presents the Rhodes retreated to their little oasis in liberty Hills to spend some quality time together as a family. With the children asleep it was just the adults, picking it some leftovers while Leanne and Malcom shared stories from years past. “Okay. I want to say a couple things.” Leanne began, settling her instrument aside and pulling Malcolm’s flannel tighter around her shoulders. “First of all. Thank you for everything today. It was beyond perfect.. sharing today with all of you. Especially you.” She kissed her husband then looked at all of her kids. “Secondly.. I want to apologize for being a little.. snappy earlier while we were waiting for the table.. I honestly had no idea about the party. Shocking I know. You kids really pull the fast one. Did you know about this?” She looked at Malcom.

Maggie sat with Grace on her lap and rested her head against her daughter's while listening to her parents perform. She always loved hearing them together and brought her back to when she was a kid and it lulled her to sleep. She joined in clapping when they were done and kissed Grace’s head while the little one rested in her arms. A laugh escaped her lips and she shook her head at her mom’s apology. “Please, you’re like me when you’re not completely in control of things. I think it was expected.” The woman teased her mom. It was a great afternoon, though, and she was honestly glad they were back t the house now relaxing.
