God, that stupid alarm went off again, burning your eardrums in the morning. You pull your pillow over your head to try and muffle the sound, but it doesn't work. Not surprising.
Your hand reaches for your phone and you bring it closer. You click the button on the alarm and look at all your notifications… yeah, about that. You never get notifications since you didn’t have hobbies and never really got out and about anymore. Your life was kind of just work, sleep, and sometimes eating.
You didn’t expect them either. You know you didn’t have many friends anymore. Well, that was a lie. You just got distant from your friends outside of work, and distant from the ones at work too.
Well, you do have to get to work. Dana won’t be too happy to see you arriving late for the third time this week. God, if only the weekends could come faster. But even if they did, you’d still have to work on them.
You finally get up out of your bed after rotting in it for a few minutes and head straight to the shower. You put your scrubs on and feel a little presence behind you while you’re brushing your teeth. Your cat. The one thing that has to be your friend no matter what.
You finish getting ready and give your cat her morning affections, since she won’t be seeing much of you until you get back. That is, unless you have to do some stupid double shift.
It’s a normal morning just like the others. Nothing special, nothing different. Just boring as ever.
When you finally get to work, you’re greeted with the familiar smell of the sterilized hospital. Well, most people call it The Pitt.
You get greeted by Dana like usual. She takes off her glasses that are barely sitting on her nose.
“Morning, kid. How was your rest day yesterday? Did you finally get out and about?”
You look at your shoes, then back at her with that look.
“Yeah… about that. I was just so tired, you knowww.”
“Excuses, excuses.” She scoffs at you but gives you a worried smile.
You make your way past her to the lockers to sling your bag in and get ready for work. You hear the night shift departing. Part of you wants to ask them how it was and, you know, have a chat. Who are you lying to? Basically all of you wants to go talk to them. Talk to anyone.
It’s kind of odd, but you hear the hustling of the ER and snap right back to reality. You hang your stethoscope around your neck and walk right in, seeing the rest of the day shift. You plaster a small smile on your face.
Robby already assigns you to room 4 and gives you a quick patient description.
“63-year-old man saying he’s been feeling nauseous, has a high fever, and abdominal swelling.”
You nod and turn around, bumping straight into someone. You don’t even have to look. It’s Dr. Langdon. You can just tell.
“Oh shoot, sorry,” you laugh.
Langdon looks at you and you laugh together. Then Robby adds, “Oh, and take Joy and Ogilvie.”
You grit your teeth to yourself. “Yeah, yeah. Of course.”
Still really close to Langdon, it takes you a second before you look up. He’s already looking at you. His hair falls perfectly into place.
Your friendship was kind of like that. You joked around, whatever. But you kind of hoped for more. You hoped that with most people around here. You really needed friends, and these people made you feel at home. Maybe even better than home sometimes.
But Langdon…ugh he was so beautiful. And he was so great at being a doctor. And looking hot while being one.
It was just hard to reconnect with him after what happened last year, with the whole addiction and rehabilitation. It was hard on everyone. You really tried to bond again, but your awkward friendship felt like it was mostly him trying and you just… not.
He was having a hard time with most people too. Especially Santos and Robby.
Whatever work. Get your mind back into work.
You keep heading to room 4, Joy and Ogilvie following right behind you.
“So, what do we think this could be? I’ll say appendicitis,” you say, slightly turning your head back to look at them.
Ogilvie steps in. “I’ll say kidney stones. Pretty common in men around this age.”
“No, I think Dr. Y/N is right. While they do have similar symptoms, it’s more likely appendicitis,” Joy argues.
You smirk to yourself as they bicker and open the door to room twelve with a smile.
“Hello, Mr. Smith. How are you holding up? My chart says you’ve been feeling pain in your abdominal area, severe nausea, and a high temperature.”
“Yes… my stomach has been killing me, and it seems to be quite swollen. More than just me being a fat old man,” he lets out a chuckle. “But, uh, I’ve had a fever for a day, and my wife got quite worried and said I needed to go to the doctor. Well… I didn’t want to worry her too much, so here I am.”
Ogilvie tries to butt in and say something stupid probably about his weight, but you step in as the higher-up, and he stops in his tracks.
“So, if it’s okay with you, I’m going to ask you some questions just to make a clear diagnosis. But I also forgot to introduce myself and my medical student. I’m Dr. Y/N, and this is Ogilvie and Joy.”
“Yes, of course. You can ask me some questions,” he replies.
“Okay, let’s get started. Where did the pain start? Did it start around your belly button and move to your lower right abdomen?”
“Do you have trouble passing gas or loss of appetite?”
Langdon walks past and can’t help but take a double take into your room while you’re with your patient. He does this with most people he likes to observe others, see their strategies, and maybe incorporate them into his own way of working. But, of course, there’s also the bonus of just watching you from afar.
He always knew you thought of him as a friend, and after getting sent to rehab, he wasn’t even sure he could call you a friend anymore. He hoped he could, at least. He knew it would be tricky to crack your shell open and rebuild your friendship, and almost everything felt awkward which made it worse.
He couldn’t help but think about how your life had been while he was in rehab. Wild as it was, he knew he shouldn’t even be thinking about this, he was married and had kids… well, recently divorced. Little did he know, things had been rough for you. Even after he came back, you hadn’t really been doing much. It wasn’t just because he went to rehab and left; life had sort of fallen apart for you after that, with family issues, work piling up, and everything in between.
You had stopped going to yoga and art classes you once enjoyed and always talked about at work because after he left for rehab, your shifts got longer. With one less experienced doctor on staff, you had more responsibilities, and slowly, your life unraveled. Now, it was just a plain cycle of work, eat, sleep, repeat.
Langdon didn’t know any of this. From the outside, it looked like your life hadn’t been great this year, but this was only his first week back. Oh boy, he would be in for a story when he finally understood why you were ever so slightly different.
Anyway, back to you. You confirm that Mr. Smith has appendicitis, you were right, like usual and Joy looks smug that Ogilvie was wrong, but you couldn’t care less. You’re focused on helping your patient.
“So, just to be sure, we’re going to need blood and urine tests, and we should do a CT scan,” you explain. “If this is truly appendicitis, we’ll need to prepare you for surgery.”
“And, um, if you need help with the urine test, Ogilvie can assist,” you add with a small smile. “I’ll be back once the results come in, and a nurse along with Ogilvie will help run the tests.”
Ogilvie gapes at you, clearly shocked, and you and Joy laugh as you leave the room. Your eyes drift toward Langdon, talking to Mel, but the way he’s standing arms behind his head, bouncing on his heels. Biceps… Whatever, you’re thinking, shake it off.
The rest of your shift passes slowly. A few traumas come in, but nothing disastrous. Later, you sit in the break room, chatting with Santos and Whitaker.
“Ugh, come on, come hang with us tomorrow after your shift me, you, Huckleberry, Crash, Mohan-”
Langdon walks into the room, and Santos goes quiet. The awkward tension is palpable. He reaches for something, and you give him a soft look, almost like I’m sorry, but I’m not forgiving you yet. He nods slightly and leaves.
“Anyway,” Santos continues, “Mohan and us just a little hangout. Come on, it’ll be so fun. You never get out of the house anymore since, like, last year, actually.”
“Heh, I don’t know,” you mumble, searching for an excuse. Your eyes flick around the room, and Whitaker notices but doesn’t say anything.
“I have to call my mum after my shift tomorrow. Just family stuff at home. Maybe next time,” you add, giving them both a hopefully forgiving smile before standing to head to the lockers.
Of course, Langdon's there. You approach your locker, trying to keep calm, hoping he won’t start talking but you know the possibility of him actually talking to you is through the roof. It’s not that you dislike him. You want to be friends again, you just don’t know how.
“So, how was your shift? How’s your cat at home? And your art classes have you been enjoying them lately?” he asks, falling into step beside you.
“Uh… it was okay, the usual,” you admit. “My cat’s good. I took her to the vet last week. And… my art classes? Uh, I haven’t been to one in a while.” You don’t know why the words just slip out; it’s been a long day, your only defense to your inner self.
“Whattttt? But you loved going. Don’t tell me you quit your yoga too.”
“I… I don’t know. My life kind of fell apart. Oh, look, it’s my car. Gotta go, see you tomorrow,” you say, giving him a small, polite smile as you walk away. Obviously trying to get out of the conversation.
He smirks to himself. Maybe you hadn’t said much, but that was the first time you’d actually spoken to him all week. Progress.
When you get home, you shower and flop onto your bed. You glance at the clock: 9:45 p.m. Maybe Langdon was right, why did you stop doing the things you enjoyed? Why had you let your life become so bland?
You scroll through some websites, book an art and yoga class for your next day off, smile to yourself, turn off your nightlight, and fall asleep almost instantly.
That same alarm went off, except you were already awake. Your cat had woken you a few minutes earlier by licking your nose with her scratchy little tongue. You get ready, trying to make yourself look nice. You don’t exactly know what compelled you, but actually, you do: after work today, you have a date. You called Dana yesterday to let her know you’d be leaving a little early.
When you get to work, you greet Dana first.
“Hey Dana, you should be happy I’m actually leaving early today,” you say with a smirk, leaning your elbow on the counter and resting your head in your hand.
“Yep I got your call. You better have a reason for us being understaffed,” she chuckles.
“Okay, give me a drum roll,” you reply.
She gives you a skeptical look. “Come on, pleaseee.” you say wanting the sound effect to make it more interesting in your view.
Princess and Perlah immediately start drumming on the counter, because of course they were eavesdropping on your conversation.
“I have a date today,” you announce.
“Oh wow, kid, I’m surprised! You’re finally being yourself after what felt like forever,” Dana says with a grin.
“Yeah, yeah. Anyway, that’s why I’m leaving shift early,” you add.
Princess and Perlah slide back to their desks, pretending to focus on work, but you know they’re gossiping in Tagalog, trying to figure out who your date is with.
You head to the locker, set your bag down, and pop into the staff room to say goodbye to the night crew. Santos spots you and corners you.
“Hey, you said you’d join us yesterday, but you were a no show,” she says.
“Yeah, well, I actually had things to do. I’m not lying. And today, I have a date, so you should be proud your girl is out there again.”
You chat for a bit before heading to your patients, clearly too excited to hide it.
Later, you’re out on a case with Dr. Mohan, and Joy tags along. You all handle the patient expertly, and you can’t help but tell Joy about your date. You’re just so excited, and if it wasn’t obvious already, everyone in earshot probably knows by now.
After a few more cases, some of just your own individual patients, you’re heading back to room 6 to show your patient their tests, which are clear, meaning they can be discharged. But when you slide the curtain open, you’re met with someone else.
You were still looking at the clip board so you didn’t notice anything for a second. Then you look up. “Oh my, I’m sorry,” you say immediately, seeing Langdon shirtless, trying to clean a wound on his shoulder.
“Do you know where my patient went? I swear he was just here like ten minutes ago. I was just gonna discharge him.”
“Uhm, nope. The room was empty when I got here.”
You can’t help but stare a bit. I mean, dude it’s Frank Langdon, shirtless, in front of you. It’s something you’ve always wanted to see ever since you met him, but you kept it far in the back of your mind since he’s, you know, married…
“Do you need some help? What happened?” you ask, doctoring him.
“Uhm, a drunk patient stabbed me in the shoulder with a scalpel. It’s not bad; it’s just deep, so I don’t want it to get infected.”
“Let me help,” you say, putting on gloves and taking a look. You start treating his wound, and he begins talking. The conversation ends up with you telling him,
“Actually, I’ve been doing okay. I’m going on a date today, actually,” you smile, still cleaning his wound.
“Oh, and this might sting.” He grits his teeth as you apply the ointment, letting out a little grunt.
“You’re going on a date? With who?” His heart shatters a little; like I said before, he knew you saw him as a friend, but oh, how much he liked you it hurt.
“He’s this guy I met when I went to my art class, finally, after a while.”
“Oh, so you listened to me and signed up, hmm?” He smirks. “See, I really am that wise. Why would you quit something you enjoy?”
The conversation deepens; it makes you happy, your hands pausing for half a second on the gauze. Being this close to him suddenly feels… dangerous. And now you’re somehow repairing your broken friendship while tending to his wound. You push that feeling down he’s married, and you just told him you’re going on a date and you’re excited but something just makes your stomach churn. You know there’s no way Langdon could like you at all; he only thinks of you as a friend, obviously…
“Okay, done. You’re all patched up, good as new,” you smile, taking your gloves off and tossing them in the bin. You turn around, and he’s still sitting on the patient bed, smiling at you. Your stomach lifts again god, he’s so hot and bonus he’s shirtless. You stare, and it’s obvious.
“So, are you just gonna let me change, or do you wanna watch?”
“Shut up,” you scoff at him and leave the room. Still a little flustered, your cheeks feel warm, and you’re all giddy until you look at the time. Shit. You were supposed to leave early, twenty minutes ago. You grab your bag from the lockers and race to your car.
After what felt like hell, you rush to get ready, and there he is your date holding you flowers at the door. His name is Jake, and he’s cute. He takes you to a restaurant, and you have a great time, but you keep thinking about someone else. You can’t help it. It’s not that you don’t like Jake. You do, he’s nice but it just isn’t the same feeling you get when you’re around Langdon.
You have fun, and he drops you back home and waits at your door for a second, probably hoping for a kiss, but you say goodbye, and he turns around.
“Wait,” Jake turns back to look at you, hope in his eyes.
“You’re really nice and sweet. I just can’t date you right now, and I don’t want to lead you on. You’re a great guy; it’s just I’m thinking about someone else right now.” His face softens.
“It’s okay. I guess I’ll see you sometime, maybe?”
“Maybe,” you smile and close your door. You stand there, your back leaning against the door for a second. Did you do the wrong thing? You plug in your headphones, put your playlist on shuffle and, of course, the first song that plays is Take My Breath Away by Berlin. Oh, the irony. You lay in your bed, slowly drifting off.
A new day just like every other but was it? It was your day off, and you start the morning with yoga, which is in an hour. You get ready. You love yoga. It’s such a great way to start your day, and you like gossiping with the other people there, making more friends.
But when you walk into your studio, your jaw couldn’t have dropped more.
He turns toward you, his back now facing the two women he’d been talking to.
You start laughing, really laughing. He just waits for you to finish.
“I’m sorry, you’re doing yoga?” you giggle some more, and he watches.
“You have to be pulling my leg. There’s no way. Does your wife know about this?” His face changes slightly you could barely notice if you didn’t pay attention.
“Hah, yeah, she would probably laugh too,” you give him a smile, and the instructor starts the lesson.
The lesson is a blast. You both walk out together, laughing and having a great time.
“Well, I have an art class to catch,” you look up at him. You guys just stare at each other for a second.
“Oh, well, I guess you should be on your way. I’ll see you at work, I hope.” He smiles, breaking the silence, and waves as he walks in the opposite direction.
You stand there for a second, then start walking to your art class, your brain fumbling. There’s no way you could have sworn he looked at your lips, then your eyes, in that moment. Whatever. You’re just an idiot. He would never do that, right? I mean, he’s married.
Fucking alarm… you turn it off immediately. Your cat is sitting on the pillow next to you. You get up and get ready—it takes just a few minutes, and it’s about a 15-minute drive to work.
“Morning. How was that date two days ago, hmm?”
“It was fun, but I broke it off. I have other things on my mind.”
“Okay, kid, but you sure?”
You walk past Dana straight to the lockers, sling your bag in, grab your stethoscope, hang it around your neck, and walk out, seeing the rest of the day shift. Javadi and Santos run to you immediately.
“Soooo, how was the date and your day off???”
You huff before saying anything. “It was great, but I broke the guy off after the date.”
“Why didn’t you say he was cute, though?”
“He is… it’s just I have other-”
Almost on cue, guess who walks past you? Langdon.
“Um, doesn’t matter, ahaha. And oh, on my day off, I went to my yoga class, and guess who I saw there? Fucking Frank Langdon came to my yoga class. God, it was so funny he could barely stretch. He has the flexibility of, like, an old man.”
He interrupts, and Santos gives him a look while Javadi just watches.
“What? The instructor said I was looking good for my first class.”
“Yeah, just ‘cause you’re hot and she has a thing for you,” he smirks.
“Are you saying you think I’m hot? I’m flattered.”
“Oh my gosh, you’re insufferable.”
You walk away to Robby. He starts giving you a brief on a case immediately, you have to coach Joy. You can’t help but overhear Princess and Perlah whispering, for once not in Tagalog.
“Did you hear that Langdon got divorced?”
“No, I heard it was just before he got sent to rehab.”
Before they say anything more, they realize how close you and Robby are, and the possibility of either of you overhearing is high, so they switch back to Tagalog.
“Y/N, are you even listening?”
You look back at Robby. “Yeah, yeah, okay, I’ll take Joy, yeah.” You turn around and start walking to room 3, Joy following behind.
“Hi, Mr. and Ms. Walters. I’m going to be your doctor today. I’m Dr. Y/N, and this is Joy, she is a Medical Student. I’m going to ask you a few questions, if that’s okay with you.”
She looks at her boyfriend and then back at you. “Yeah, I’m good with that, but we aren’t married, haha.”
“Oh, sorry for that. Okay, anyways—you said you’ve been feeling quite nauseous and missed your period this month. First off, do you have an irregular period, or is this unusual?”
“Yeah, it’s quite odd for me to miss a period.”
“Have your breasts been swelling or feeling tender?”
She looks at her shoes. You can tell she’s embarrassed to answer in front of her boyfriend, but Joy already noticed and is telling him he can wait in the waiting room until she’s done. After he leaves, she quickly replies, “Yes.”
“Now, this might be a little embarrassing to answer, but have you and your boyfriend been having sex? Is it protected?”
“Yes, and yes, of course.”
“Okay, okay. I’m going to check your heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure.” You reach over and put your stethoscope on her chest.
“Okay, take a deep breath in… and now slowly breathe out.”
“Your breathing and heart rate seem normal, and Joy just checked your blood pressure, which is normal too”.
“So, I’d also like to check you with a urine test. I’ll come back to check on you after we get the results. If you need any help, you can ask a nurse, we have many around.”
You nod at her and walk out of the room with Joy.
“I think she might be pregnant,” you say to Joy while still walking.
“Yeah, the possibility of that is quite high…”
“Okay, you go work on another case. I just need to do something.”
You walk past and see Langdon talking to Ogilvie and Whitaker, probably about some other case.
“Hey, uh, Langdon, do you think I could talk to you for a sec?” He turns around, already knowing it’s you from the sound of your voice.
“Yeah, sure. What do you need?”
“I think it’s better if we’re in private.”
“Oh, oh, okay. Excuse me, guys, just keep working on the case. I’ll be back in a minute.”
You guys walk to an emptier corner.
“I know this is a really odd question right now, but I heard Princess and Perlah talking about it earlier… are you divorced?”
His face looks shocked. He doesn’t say anything for a minute.
“Yeah. We got divorced before I left for rehab.”
“Gosh, I’m so sorry. Why didn’t you tell me earlier?”
“It never came up. You never asked.”
Suddenly, Whitaker calls for Langdon.
“Shoot, I have to go. But yeah, yeah.” He swiftly turns on his heels and walks right back over to Whitaker and Ogilvie, who then go over to their patient’s room.
Before you can even catch your breath, someone tells you a trauma is coming in a few minutes and that you should be ready.
Around five minutes later, two people are wheeled in. Robby, Al-Hashimi, Langdon, and you are all there, immediately followed by Santos, Whitaker, Ogilvie, and Joy. The ambulance staff start explaining what happened.
“We have two people coming in, a male and a female.”
“Male, mid-40s, driver in a two-car collision. Found unconscious at the scene. Possible head trauma. Blood pressure dropping, pulse 120.”
The woman being wheeled in is screaming in pain while the man is unconscious, just as they stated.
“Female passenger, mid-30s. Conscious and alert but in severe pain. Complaining of chest and abdominal pain after impact. Suspected rib fractures and possible internal bleeding. Vitals unstable, pulse 115, blood pressure 95 over 60.”
Robby splits everyone up immediately.
“Get them to free rooms immediately. Y/N, Langdon, and Whitaker take Ogilvie as well, great learning experience. Santos, Al-Hashimi, and Mohan come with me. We’ll take the female. You take the male.”
You all separate as the ambulance team wheels the patients to the rooms.
“Transfer on three. One, two, three.”
You all lift the patient from the stretcher onto the bed. He still doesn’t react since he’s unconscious.
“Okay, thanks. We’ll take it from here,” you say as the ambulance team nods and leaves you with the unconscious patient.
Ogilvie passes you the scissors as you cut the patient’s clothes off so the team can make better examinations.
Langdon starts talking. “Airway’s clear. Let’s get him on oxygen.”
Whitaker puts the oxygen mask on the patient.
“BP’s dropping. Pulse 130.”
You think for a second. “Okay. Start two large IV lines. Hang fluids.”
Langdon nods and starts the IV fluids. He grabs a flashlight and shines it in the patient’s eyes.
You butt in. “Breath sounds decreased on the left.”
“Ogilvie, what does this show signs of right now?” you ask, testing him while still working on the patient.
“Uhmm… a possible collapsed lung or lung injury?”
“Correctamundo,” Whitaker adds.
“Prep for needle decompression.”
Langdon looks up at you for a second to make sure you’re sure, then grabs a needle and inserts it into the man’s chest to release the trapped air.
Ogilvie looks at the monitor. “Breath sounds improving.”
Whitaker also glances at the monitor. “Blood pressure’s coming up, 110 over 70.”
Langdon lets out a small sigh. “Good. Keep the fluids running.”
“Pressure’s improving, breathing’s stable. Let’s prep him for imaging.”
Finally, after he’s stable, not conscious yet, but stable, and he’s being sent for imaging. It’s not in your hands anymore.
You look up at Langdon. “Good job.”
“Thanks. You did great out there.”
You smile and then look at Whitaker and Ogilvie, who give each other a knowing glance.
“So what have you learned from this, Ogilvie?”
“This week was a lot less boring than I thought it would be.”
You laugh a bit. Then you all take off your gowns, toss them in the bin, and peel off your gloves.
“Okay, back to our other patients. Great job, team.”
Before you walk out, Ogilvie and Whitaker are already gone. Langdon gives you a little pat on the head.
“Hey, I’m just congratulating you.”
“And, uh… you were really calm in there.”
“Not everyone can do it like that.”
You scoff and walk back to room 3 to check on your patient since her tests have come back.
“Hi, Ms. Walters. I’m back with some news… This isn’t easy for me to say, and I know you’re quite young, and I don’t think you expected this, but… you’re pregnant.”
You look down at your shoes finding your composure and then back at her with a serious face.
She’s still sitting on the bed, eyes wide. You can see the fear in them.
“I’m pregnant? What? You have to be joking.”
“When we got your urine test back, it showed signs of pregnancy, and your symptoms also lead to it. Just to make sure, we’ll take a qualitative hCG test to confirm…”
She looks at the floor, then straight up at the ceiling. You see tears starting to form in her eyes.
“Do you want me to leave? I can call your boyfriend back in, or I can call your parents or any relatives.”
She doesn’t say anything at first, then gives a small sniffle.
“Can you just call my mum? I don’t want anyone else.”
“Yes, of course. I’ll get someone to call her number and tell her to come down. She should be here soon. If not, you should hear more information about this from the nurses.”
You walk out of the room. Oof… that was something. She’s just so young…
The next patient you’re assigned is a young little girl who’s been feeling quite nauseous. You go to room 2.
“Hi, I’m going to be your doctor today. I’m Dr. Y/N. What’s your name?”
You look down at the kid sitting on the edge of the bed, then up to give her mum a nod.
You smile at her, and she gives you a small smile back while still holding her stomach.
“So I hear your stomach has been hurting and you feel like you’re going to be sick?”
She looks up at her mum, who nods at her.
You look up and start speaking to the mum.
“I think she’ll be fine. We can run some tests, and I’ll check her breathing and heart rate in a second, but I don’t think it’s much to worry about. If you want, you can stay here until she feels better, just in case anything actually happens.”
“Mummy, I feel really, really sick.”
You look at the mum, and she gives you an acknowledging nod.
You kneel down so you’re eye level with Emma and use your stethoscope to check her breathing. But as soon as you press the stethoscope against her chest, she vomits all over your scrubs.
“Well… at least she hopefully won’t feel sick anymore,” you say with a little chuckle.
“I’ll be back after I’ve cleaned up. I can get someone else to help you.”
You turn around and walk out of the room straight to Joy, who’s standing with Santos and Javadi.
“Woah, what happened to you?”
“Yeah, haha… a little girl vomited all over me. Can one of you go talk to the mum and finish the examination? She’s in room 2. Please.”
“Fine, I’ll go,” Santos says. She looks like she’s about to pat your shoulder but pulls her hand back. Yeah… no one wants to touch you with all that vomit.
You walk past them and scan your ID to get new scrubs. You take them and find a free room to change.
You take off the top of your scrubs and then your undershirt. You search in your bag to find a spare. Always bring a spare undershirt—you never know what’s going to happen.
Then you hear the click of the door and someone walk in.
Shit. You forgot to lock it.
You turn around to see Langdon. Of course it’s him.
He looks confused, and heat starts rising up his neck.
“Why are you half naked in a free room wasting space that patients need?”
“Well, that’s a bit rude, isn’t it? When I caught you half naked in an empty room, I helped you patch up, not just stare.”
“I’m not staring, and that was different.”
“Yes, you are. And how so? What, so a man is allowed to take up space but a woman can’t? Is it because I have boobs which you can’t stop staring at?”
“No, no, of course not. Can you just change quicker or whatever?”
“You’re such a perv, my gosh. Will you leave then, or do you want me to take my pants off in front of you too?”
He stands there with his mouth slightly open and doesn’t say anything.
“There’s no way you’re actually thinking about that. Get out.”
He turns around and leaves, closing the door.
You smile to yourself and quickly change into the new scrubs.
You get back out there and tackle a few more cases and traumas, you and Langdon working as a team. You smile, he smirks. You order, he reassures, it was perfect.
Except then you guys are left alone in an empty room, and the tension is high since you just finished a trauma. The way Langdon handled it was hot, and his hair was all messy with sweat beading on his forehead.
You were about to leave when you hear his voice.
“You never answered my question.”
“What? You never asked me one.”
You scoff again, but you feel your face getting warm.
Then you notice a little bit of blood on his cheek and grab a paper towel, reaching to clean it off his face. You guys are so close it would almost look like you were kissing if someone saw it from a different angle.
Then you hear the door click.
She looks up, and her face goes through every emotion possible.
You step away from Langdon.
“It’s nothing, I swear. He just had blood on his face and I was going to wipe it off, I—”
She slams the door shut before you can finish.
Fuck. Fuck. No one needs to know, and if she knows, everyone will in a matter of minutes.
You leave the room right after her, leaving Langdon standing there in surprise.
You follow after Santos and finally catch up to her.
“Santos, Santos, why are you so mad?”
“What the fuck do you think you’re doing, Y/N? You should stay away from him. You know he was an addict.”
“I know he was, but that was a while ago.”
“Not fucking long enough. Are you mental? God, don’t tell me the reason you’re actually doing stuff with your life again instead of being lazy and blaming everyone else is because he’s back.”
It takes her a second to realize.
“Wait… Y/N, I didn’t mean it like that.”
You stare at her. Your stomach twists a bit. Sure, you’re mad, but you’re also really fucking tired and you just want to cuddle with your cat and go to sleep.
“It’s fine. I mean, you’re right, I guess. But I wasn’t doing anything with him, I promise you.”
“You’re such a fucking idiot,” she laughs, putting her hand on your shoulder before walking past you.
You smirk. Your shift is about over anyway, so you go back to the lockers to grab your stuff.
You put your AirPods in, turn up the music, and walk out of The Pitt, giving Ellis a high five as she’s coming in for the night shift. Completely unaware of someone walking behind you.
You keep walking to your car and shuffle your playlist again. It lands on Every Breath You Take by The Police. You smile to yourself, it’s your favourite song.
Unaware, Langdon is also walking to his car, a bit behind you, watching every step you take, thinking about whether this is the right thing to do.
He jogs up to you and taps your shoulder.
You take out your left AirPod. “Langdon?”
He runs a hand through his hair, pacing once like he’s trying to decide something.
“I wasn’t going to say anything,” he says finally. “I told myself it would make everything complicated.”
He looks at you like the answer is obvious.
“…I think I’m in love with you.”
What. No, he didn’t just say that, did he? I must be hearing things. Your stomach flutters and you feel your face getting hot.
“I couldn’t help it. I thought about you while I was in rehab. I know I shouldn’t have, but I did. And it was kinda sad when you ignored me on my first day back, but it was all worth it since now I feel like I’ve never been closer to you. And you’re so pretty and smart, and I could listen to you all day.”
“I love you too, Langdon.”
“Frank. Please call me Frank. I hate when people call me that.”
He steps closer. Your back bumps against your car door. His hand hesitates, like he’s asking permission before touching your face. His hand slides to your jaw, warm and steady.
“If this ruins everything…” he murmurs.
And then you kiss him. You have to stand on your tippy toes to reach him, but wow, that was everything you ever thought it would be.
He whispers against your lips, “So you still think I’m not hot?”
“I think you already know…”
He pulls back slightly, both of you breathless.
“My place?” he asks with a grin.
You get straight into his car. You guys keep kissing at every red light, basically tearing each other’s clothes off. As soon as you reach his apartment…
“You don’t understand how long I’ve dreamed of what comes next.”
The end. The rest is up to your own imagination.
