Eating as Offering
For whatever reason, many pagans and witches can find themselves unable or unwanting to leave uneaten food as offerings to deities.
I’m one of these pagan witches. I’m a broke college student, I’ve got nowhere to leave out offerings or bury them, and I don’t want the little food I’ve got to go to waste. So, when I want to give food as an offering to my gods, I eat a meal with them.
This works fantastically for me, as it gives me time to sit down with my gods, so to speak, pray to them, or communicate.
My general ritual is as follows:
1. Prepare the food. You can do this with the intention of giving it as an offering, and if you want, cook accordingly. Sometimes I’ve just grabbed a snack and have it halfway to my mouth when I realize I should give it as an offering. Both work. (As a hellenic pagan: If I’ve planned ahead, I’ll wash my hands with lustral water, if I’m on the fly I’ll just make sure my hands are clean.)
2. Mark the food as an offering. If I’m in public, I won’t say anything aloud. If I’m alone, I will often greet the god(s) I intend to give the food as an offering to and ask them to receive it.
3. Eat! I get rid of distractions (put my phone to the side, etc) and begin to eat. While doing so, I will pray to my god(s), usually in my head as my mouth is full, keeping them at the forefront of my mind.
When I’m done with the food, I will thank the gods and ask that they accept my offering. This method works for me, my gods have never shown displeasure at how I personally practice.

Artemis
Artemis is an amazing female icon and a very strong Goddess as one of the twelve on the council (otherwise known as the Olympians). She is the daughter of Zeus and Leto and twin to Apollo. In the lore of their birth, Leto was on the island of Delos alone when she gave birth to the twins and Artemis, being the firstborn, helped Leto to deliver Apollo seconds after she was born. Artemis and her brother are otherwise known as the Twin Archers as they are both depicted as wielding a bow and arrow.
Artemis is the maiden Goddess of the moon, the hunt and wild animals, chastity, wilderness, and in some cases fertility/childbirth. She is seen as the protector of women, especially those in childbirth. Artemis is the head of a group of immortal girls known as the Hunters of Artemis. These women are asked to take a vow of chastity in order to join the hunt and they go around with Artemis hunting wild game and even protecting young women. It is important to note that men can and have worshipped Artemis, those who have lost their virginity and continue to have sex while worshipping Artemis are a thing too. You do not have to be a female virgin to worship her.
General: Crescent moon (new moon), bow and arrow, sandals, clouds, three pillars, and blue sky, menstrual blood.
Animals: Dogs, guinea fowl, elephant, horses, bear, dove, deer, and bee.
Plants: Anemones, flowering almond, hazel, ranunculus, honeysuckle, thistle, laurel, and fir tree.
Perfumes/Scents: Jasmine, aloe, ginseng, lemon verbena, and camphor
Gems and Metals: Moonstone, pearl, quartz, crystal, silver, turquoise, iron, aluminum, and diamonds.
Colors: Silver, white, red, green, and turquoise
Things To Pray For: ask her for strength against men, a good goddess to pray to if you have been abused, ask for strength in general or self-restraint, help with your temper, help you with sick or injured animals or to take care of nature, help with pregnancy/childbirth.
Invocation of Artemis
Artemis I sing thy praises. From thy woodlands great I call unto thee. I have answered thee In the dark of night. Thy hands have fed me, And I am full. Thou huntress of Night, Divine Protectress, Keeper of all mysteries Let thy light flood me with wisdom And thy presence fill me. I have answered thee In the early morn. Thy song has comforted me And I am strong. Great Goddess of moon and magic Mistress of the deer and owl Be thou my guide and inspiration. Teach me thy mysteries And lead me in thy ways For I have seen thee beneath the cool dark night And I have answered thee.
Personal experience: Artemis acts swiftly and justly. I asked for protection for my mother, so she realized that she was in a very abusive situation and wasn’t harmed trying to leave, and the strength to make it through this ordeal and within two or so days I got the news my mother was beginning to work on a safe exit plan to leave her boyfriend. I didn’t have anything that would be a “good offering” for her so I gave her a dried rose head from a flower arrangement my mother had given to me for my birthday. She accepted it and dealt with the problem right away.
Artemis is the Goddess I look to when I need strength and acceptance. She’s not above going the extra mile for someone she see’s is suffering and loves her followers. I’m pretty sure her favorite thing is to punish abusers, especially if they’re men. She can have her mean streaks, don’t get me wrong, but overall I haven’t had an issue with her that couldn’t be fixed with an apology, offering, and a show of humility. Also yes, I have had sex and will probably continue to do so. She doesn’t care as long as you haven’t sworn chastity to her.

Many, many, many other things not said here
There are two kinds of Justice.
She did not know that in her youth as her mother put herself through law school at a later age in order to stand on her own two feet. But she felt it.
She did not know it in high school as she researched thoroughly and battled valiantly for her Mock Trial team. But she felt it.
There was no other degree for her to consider. Law was in her blood. In her soul. No, Justice was- came a distant and haunting song.
She needed Athena. She needed Artemis. Those early adult years learning Pat Benatar was absolutely right- Love Is A Battlefield. She bore the scars inside and out. She needed the straightforward comfort and support of Them.
But there are two kinds of Justice.
And her blood and heart and soul was meant for another.
Finding her own schism in the earth to lead her down was startling. And the unknown was frightening.
But the icy waters felt like home. The blood drenched oaths and dreaded iron felt like armor.
There are two kinds of Justice. And Styx is her kind.

Ideas for worshipping Athena
- Cross stitch, weave, crochet, anything with needle and thread. - When you walk into a library, greet her. - Of course, research her myths and stories. - Play games that are meant to stimulate your mind - Read books about war and/or wisdom (of course, right) - Listen to music that makes you feel pumped and powerful. - Wear jewelry and clothes with owl motifs. (Spiders work to) - Dedicate your exercising and work outs to her. - Become politically aware. - Use your strengths to fight for those who need help. - Add olives/olive oil to your diet. - Look at/make maps of Athens.
Offerings don’t have to be big.
My offering to Athena this morning: The first few sips of my Earl Grey. A candle and some crystals that remind me of her.
My offering to Nike this morning: A bowl of herbs that capture her essence. A candle and some crystals that remind me of her.
Athena Worship
I have seen many blogs and people who worship different Greek gods and it is great that they share their experiences with everyone else. But what about Athena? I have not found any information about her, I asked her in a prayer to guide me and until now with her symbols I have been able to collect all this information. Athena is the goddess of military strategy, but do not compare her with Ares, she knows when to stop or when it is necessary to fight. It also represents crafts and knowledge. She is an excellent protector, and you can always ask her for knowledge. She was the protector of many heroes, gave them the strength to fight for their ideals. If you show her courage and are not afraid of the hardships she faces in life, rest assured that she will be proud of you.
What can I put on my altar?
Besides that you can put a small statue that represents it, you can also join the symbols of the snake and the owls, that represent their wisdom.
You can put a little olive oil to decorate your altar.
Crystals and herbs that represent protection and wisdom.
golden and red candles! They are her favorite colors. It may seem a little like Christmas, but concentrate on knowing how to combine them.
Offerings:
Crafts! Like origami, papercraft, cards, sewing or anything else you can do on your own with your hands. Even paintings and drawings.
Olives and olive oil.
Any type of food, formerly sacrifices were made in her name but now you can just leave her some cookie or whatever you want. If you share with her, she will thank you.
Prayers:
You can ask for strength to overcome a situation where you feel you have to fight for something. Something with friends, family or whatever kind of weight you have on top of and you need to fight for it.
Ask for knowledge for important exams.
Ask for her presence when you need creativity in crafts and then show her and thank her! She will be proud of you for putting all your effort into that.
You can always ask for clues or inspiration, she is very generous with the signs.
Personal experience:
The first time I spoke directly with her, I asked her for signs in dreams. They were dreams too heavy and full of symbols, I could hardly sleep but I felt rested.
Once I was desperate looking for my sketchbook, I could not find it anywhere. Internally I asked her to help me get it and I literally found it two seconds later where I never thought it could be.
When I feel fear for the presences in my home, it is enough to ask for strength to feel brave again. She reminds me that I am a hero, the hero of my own story and it helps me focus on myself.
Request your presence whenever I need to draw or work on something that requires creativity, makes me feel more agile.
While I write this I asked for your presence, it took a long time without making an offering for time problems and I wanted to write this for her. I hope it serves you and share it!
Hoping this help you!
Athena wants you to work hard, but she also wants you to take care of yourself.
I just made myself something to eat and took a study break and I could feel Athena looking over my shoulder and nodding approvingly, This is the closest I have ever been to communicating with her and it was her approving me taking care of myself!
Remember that the gods love you and want you to be healthy and happy and successful.

Lunar Blessing
Thou Moon, Who shinest brightest in the night, I pray thee, Guide my path with your light.

This was one of the biggest barriers I faced when starting to get into Irish myth (back in the days before Youtube, unfortunately), so hopefully this video by Lora O’Brien will help some folks.
A friend asked me to pair the Irish deities with the Major Arcana for a book he’s doing… so I came up with this list (under a read more). Let me know what you think! A few of the deities were pre-assigned in a way that I agreed with, most were not ^^;; I have reasoning for each pairing, even if it’s a bit of a leap in some cases.

Write your Witchcraft
The thing is, we change. We are not the same person we were five years ago. Hel, a lot of us are not even the same people we were last week. We change, and our beliefs, favourites, thoughts and the way we see ourselves changes with it.
The same is true for our witchraft, religion and spiritual beliefs. This is why I have a list of question that I like to answer for myself every couple of years. I first started this when I came across a list of questions by Juniper from Walking the Hedge (site no longer in use) in 2008, yes, over ten years ago. Every few years I filled in the questions and looked back at the answers I gave before. Some never changed, some changed quite a lot.
When our coven started a new lesson plan, I gave out the list of questions as well. We sealed our answers in envelopes and plan to fill them in again, once we finish our lessons. Then open the envelopes and look at the answers side by side. To see how we have changed.
I looked at the list last week and found it actually lacking a bit. The questions were very deity- and spiritual based, so I was missing some more questions about my personality and witchcraft. So I decided to make my own list of questions!
Since I wanted to make this more a weekly journaling/grimoire prompt for myself I put together 52 questions. These can be answered weekly (maybe every year) or you can work through the list in one go and repeat that every few years or so.
Some notes on the wording: I consider myself both a witch and a pagan, but to keep it easier to read I only used wording like “witch” and “witchcraft”, they can however be substituted for “pagan”, “paganism” or even “my path”, should that fit you better. When I talk about “sacred space” this can both mean a ritual space like a temple or casting of a circle, but also just your home or outdoors witchy environment.
I’d love it if you would tag anything you feel comfortable with posting online with the tag #writeyourwitchcraft!
