To anyone suffering with MENTAL ILLNESS: You are one badass mother fucker because nothing is more terrifying than battling with your own mind every single day.
This was a post on Instagram by geekstrong and it really made me feel better so I wanted to share it.
*Trigger Warning: this post discusses mental illness including suicidal thoughts, depression, PTSD, etc.*
So I was recently hospitalized and I wanted to rant about how mental health is dealt with in our society. Many people do not understand mental illness if they are not affected by it, in a similar way that if you are not part of the queer community or if you are not a person of color, you probably don’t understand those people’s culture, oppression, etc. Even the nurses at the hospital were invalidating, saying things like: “Oh, you’re just faking it,” “You’re doing it for attention,” and shit like that. Many of the patients, myself included, were confused as to why these women were nurses in a mental health facility.
Also, I just have to say, YOU DO NOT SAY THAT TO SOMEONE! You don’t tell someone you is suicidal, depressed, in a flash back, etc. that their doing it for a attention or that their faking it! If you’ve ever said that to someone who is struggling, YOU ARE AN ASSHOLE.
But I’m just venting. I guess the main point of this post is to raise awareness for mental heath issues and those struggling with them. As someone who suffers from depression, anxiety, and to a lesser degree, tourettes and ADHD, I understand how difficult it is to deal with this shit. It is more than anyone should have to deal with.
I just want everyone out there to know you are not alone.
You are amazing and beautiful and loved.
If you’re looking for a sign, this is it. Please don’t take you life.
