It's just a look, it doesn't mean anything.

Arthur is in a meeting, frustrated beyond belief that his nobles have their heads so far up their arses, that they can't see reason. Magic. Isn't. Dangerous. He's just about to pull his sword when he glances sideways.... And there's Merlin. A quick nod and Arthur feels that rubber band in his chest loosen. That need to scream dissolve.

But it's just a look.

Arthur is out on the training field with his Knights, and nobody is listening. So naturally, he pushes harder. All he hears are complaints. He's about to knock Gwain upside the head when he looks up, and there's Merlin. Smiling at him. Suddenly his shoulders relax. He takes off his helmet and calmly adresses the knights. Going forth they have a good training session

But it's just a look.

He's in the great all for a feast, thrown for a visiting Duke. This man has asked him no less than 4 times why he's not married yet. And isn't his daughter just so beautiful. You need a queen you know. Arthur has had his fair share of wine, in an effort to tolerate this conversation. He's feeling more than a little drunk when he raises his cup to be filled again, and it's Merlin at his side. But wait, he's filling it not with more wine, but water? A quick glance up and Arthur sees a softness. A longing. Arthur Thanks him, and excuses himself to bed a half an hour later.

But..... it's just a look?

Later that night, alone in his chambers he lay in bed and remembers all the emotions he's read in Merlins eyes over the years. The disappointment, the frustration, the humor, and more recently, the soft longing. The love. He wants to see more of that he thinks.

Jumping from bed he puts on a robe and starts for Merlins chambers.

Maybe it's not JUST a look.

when it was revealed that agravaine was a traitor, arthur asked merlin if he, merlin, knew that. in response, merlin, who had tried so hard to tell arthur (only to be treated absolutely horribly in return), didn’t say “i told you so,” or “yes, obviously i knew,” or anything that would make arthur feel worse. he just said that he suspected it. because arthur was already so hurt and merlin just wanted him to be okay. could you ever love anybody that much? insane.

day 3: first time

also sometimes i remember that “just hold me, please” is an actual canon line said by the most emotionally stunted man on the planet. like i forget it’s not from a fanfic or something. he actually said that. that was arthur pendragon’s dying wish. get fucked, bbc merlin writers. and thank you.

That gif and tbh that episode was such a gift because it showed us, in much detail, what happens to Arthur when Merlin comes close to dying and goes missing.

We just have to think about when those rocks fall and Arthur looks like his entire life has just crumbled around him… and then that scream of Merlin’s name…

Anyway then you’ve got an Arthur who will order his knights who have just scoured a forest to scour it again. Who will not even let his uncle say that Merlin is dead, that will not accept a new manservant, that will plan to go out on his own to look for Merlin, who admits he can’t accept that Merlin is gone and that he wont rest till he’s tried to look for him.

And that’s just after Merlin is missing.

Oh and I could mention so many more instances where Arthur will put everything on hold for Merls. Like in 104 or when he wanted to abandon the quest in 402.

Could you imagine if Merlin died? And Arthur had to watch?

Arthur wouldn’t have handled it well. He would try to be strong at first but he would crack pretty fast and Merlin would know this and would probably want him to go to which Arthur would refuse because if Merlin is going to die, he won’t be alone.

And fuck, Arthur would at least have tears in his eyes or would actually be crying the entire time. He would then try to be strong again but then, Merlin is dying would hit him and he’d be set away again.

I don’t think Arthur would be able to compute once Merlin died. He’d be in steadfast denial for a long while. He wouldn’t be able to take it, I don’t think. He wouldn’t move, he wouldn’t do anything. If his whole world crumbled just when he and Merlin got separated, then his whole life would just be dust blowing in the wind if Merlin had died.

This is absolutely true. He’s emotionally stunted only in the way he has a hard time properly expressing them or getting words out, but he has so many and they are strong. He’d be a “heart on the sleeve” type of person if his father hadn’t thrust so many unfair expectations and lessons on him. Merlin and Arthur are ride or die. Merlin at times is Arthur’s sanity and responsible for it because he treats Arthur as a human being, not a prince or Pendragon.
