When Korben was a kitten and I’d had him around a week he jumped up onto my keyboard. I scooped him up and set him back on the ground because kitties who walk on keyboards don’t get desk privileges.
When I looked at the screen he’d perfectly typed “loki”. I know those letters are all right next to each other but it still seemed portentous as fuck.
I looked down at him and said, “I will call you Loki over my dead body, you’re Korben and you’ll like it.” He’s been the most troublesome and mischievous cat I’ve ever owned but I refuse to cave to omens.
Sans was notoriously hard to get information out of. Approaching him at work was a no go. Sans had put on a persona in work, only calling Undyne Captain. He appeared almost cheery as he went about his work.
Spotting him after work, Undyne figured it was now or never.
"Sans, can I talk to you?" Her voice was lower and serious, not the booming orders that Sans was used to from her.
He was immediately on edge, "uh, Undyne? I'm uh... just heading home."
"Listen, I want to check in. I'm worried."
"Why?"
"I've been trying to understand you two for a long time but everything I find out just makes me more worried. Between you two just showing up one day, the things Papyrus has said, to the other skeletons' gossip about your magic. I just want a straight answer." She caught his shoulder and immediately Sans grabbed his hood, pulling it up over his head.
"There's not much to say," Sans said, not looking at her, "I figured it was obvious."
"Sans... is there anyone with you two? A trusted adult? Someone?"
Sans broke away from the hand on his shoulder, walking towards the doorway, "I need to go, Paps gets worried if I take too long."
Undyne watched him, her hackles raising at the thought of these two teen skeletons being alone. No wonder Papyrus was always so worried if they were all each other had.
Sans stood in the open doorway, hood blocking Undyne's view of his face. "The wolves check in on us. If you want to know more, talk to Doggo." As he walked through the door, he made a short cut, a flash of blue light signalling his exit.
The human's curiosity was a marvel. You had always admired the species for their ability to bounce back so quickly, circumventing their fear in the name of curiosity.
Even this human child who has every right to never trust you or your crew. You have some idea on what this child has been through and none of it was good. You'd recently received the files back from the authorities after hours of back and forth. You couldn't check them out physically until more trust was made.
You were sat in the cell near the human as you read the files. The human stayed in their corner but they were occupied with the puzzle cube you'd given them. You could hear them fiddling in the background as you read.
That fiddling eventually stopped and when you looked up, you noticed they were staring at the doorway where another of your kind was standing there.
She was a more tropical variant to you, her plumage was lighter with brighter greens, reds and ultra-violets. Just looking at her put you at ease from your terrifying read. She let out a greeting trill which you returned before you stood up.
"Yinsin? What are you doing here?" You asked, leaning your snout on her shoulder as she trilled sweetly in your ear.
"I heard from Et-han that this human is another child." Her talons fiddled with your crest, releasing more tension you didn't realise you were holding. "I had to come see for myself." She stepped back to show off the tape measure she held. "Also they're in need of some extra insulation."
You nodded, "I'm not sure they'll allow you to, my love."
"We'll never know until we try, besides, they'll have to meet me at some point. I am head of this station." Her talons moved from your crest to the back of your neck, pulling you in for one more hug. "You could do with a break. If they respond well to me, I can take over for a while. Or Et-han can."
You just nodded, feeling the beginning of a headache forming.
The human child had been watching your whole interaction and didn't appear threatened when Yinsin started coming towards them. It was only when she reached the edge of their personal space that they tensed up, a small warning growl escaping them.
"I see," she nodded, inching away before showing off the tape measure in her hands, "look, I just need some measurements. Nothing bad."
The human looked at the tape measure and growled again so Yinsin showed on herself. She placed it on one of her arms, showing how the measurement was made, how it would go around her arm then her chest.
The child tilted their head.
You were so excited to see that curiosity but more importantly, the child was acting close to a chick of your species and a small motherly part of you saw your own offspring. Well, a big motherly part of you.
Yinsin brought the tape back to them and while they leaned away from it, they had extended their arm to allow her to measure it. Yinsin twittered sweetly, "lovely, you're doing so good."
You cooed too.
Yinsin moved slow when taking all the measurements needed, "I'll still make it oversized, they'll need the growing room."
"They're very undernourished so it's best. Probably make the fabric soft too, just to cushion everything."
"I will." Yinsin trilled, "I'll get to designing but first," she stood up again and faced you, her talon booping the end of your snout, "you need a rest, my dear."
"Are you ok to sit with them? They don't like to be alone."
"I will be fine," she smiled before slipping her hand into yours, taking out the data pad you were previously reading off of.
"Wait, wait," you reached for it.
"I mean a proper rest," she trilled scoldingly, "no more reading until you've had some sleep and reconnect with the rest of the station. The kids are missing you."
You looked sadly at the data pad then back at her, "fine. I will, but by next cycle I need that back. There's still a lot to go through."
"That's my girl." Yinsin pressed her snout into the side of your face, "go get some rest Yarrow. Love you."
So I'd put Alphys and Sans in the same age range here, around 16-18.
Alphys is a young genius who started working in the castle as part of some initiative of the royal family to create education programs to promote sustainability within the kingdom. Alphys would have been young talent they'd discovered in those programs and brought on permanently.
Sans had no formal education but he picks up on things quickly and he's very smart for his age. His father was a scholar and he has odd knowledge of different things. Letting Alphys talk at him is oddly nostalgic and he lets her teach him some things, even if he doesn't think he'll need the info.
I'd rather he'd betrayed me with a smile on his face. Anything to get the image of that wounded deer look out of my head.
I crawled out from the hole he stuck me in, I clawed my way through the ranks with his blood still under my fingernails. I braced the blows and bore the bruises of long training sessions, gaining attention of unsavoury figures just to stand against the one I saw as my closest ally, the one I'd once offered my complete trust.
He didn't even recognise me at first. Standing on a stage surrounded by heroes and civilians, the gala was in full swing and the opening acts had finished their performance. Now they awaited my song.
My eyes scanned the crowd for that silvery outfit of Emerald city's darling Megaman. He had one of the best seats in the house, a beautiful balcony to witness the villain he had created.
The band began to play, a song he knew well. My eyes landed on his face wondering if he'd figure it out. After all, I was wearing a large black hat with a veil. My attire was similarly dark, I used to be so colourful for him.
Then I started to sing.
I looked away as his head shot up. He was too late to stop me anyway. My smile grew as everyone who heard me froze in place, their eyes glazing over. The only people still moving were my team, their ears plugged as a precaution but I had enough control to spare them anyway.
And I had enough control to allow Megaman to remain conscious but unable to move.
I stared him in the eye. His face was able to contort into pain as he realised I was alive before him. Not only had I survived his power, but he would not survive mine.
My team struck, pulling valuables off of bodies and putting power cuffs on any heroes. I stayed where I was, staring at the man I once knew.
Part of me felt the twisted satisfaction of getting back at him, it wanted me to do more, to make him hurt like he hurt me. The other part brought tears to my eyes and a waver to my voice.
I thought so highly of him. I'd told him things I'd never told anyone else and he'd done the same. I once felt safe around him.
I watched tears slip down his cheeks, creating wet patches in his mask. For the whole song, we just stared at each other. I hadn't even noticed my team had finished their heist until one of them jumped up on stage.
"Mystique," they said, "it's time to go."
I stopped singing, looking at the younger super and nodded silently. I followed them out of the theatre, giving Megaman a final look before disappearing.
I had thought I'd feel good after revealing myself. I really wanted to rub it in his face that he'd turned his closest ally into his worst enemy. That the council had worried so much about my power that they'd created their own self fulfilling prophecy of destruction.
I thought I'd feel free from that wounded deer. But all I'd done was create a new face to haunt my dreams.
like the betrayal’s always going to be worse if they cared about you and it didn’t matter. someone discards you because they didn’t give a shit, then you can be angry about that, you can feel vindicated in that, you can get over it. but if they can look you in the eyes and say “I love you. I would make the same choice again.” You will never sleep peacefully again, is all.
“I thought they cared about me, but they were lying this whole time.” <- tired. boring. removes all the nuance of this relationship to make it easier to move on from.
“I thought they cared about me, and I was right, and every minute they were there for me, every time they said they were proud, every laugh we shared leaning against each other bruised and breathless, all of it was real. and they still left me behind. They could put their love aside. I couldn’t.” <- insane. will never leave you alone. reminds you that even the worst people are still people and can still care about even the ones they hurt the most and that undoes neither the harm nor the love.
So I think I've got an idea on what I actually want to do with some of the drawings I've made for Undertale. So firstly, this is an au where monsters never went underground and they won't be going underground in this au.
While Sans is part of the royal guard in this, he's not a swap Sans. If anything he was unwillingly conscripted.
Sans and Papyrus started out as street kids, having to steal to survive so they both got very good at blending into the background. Sans would usually be the one to steal then pass anything off to Paps since his shortcuts would keep him out of trouble if he got caught.
He'd normally let them chase him away so that Paps could get far enough away from everything before he'd shortcut away. They ended up being very successful in this method that Undyne herself had to get involved.
And she was far more successful in catching him.
During sentencing, the king and queen realised that he was just a kid trying to survive so instead of locking him up, they gave him a job in the royal guard and a place for him and his brother to live. Even then, money was tight and Papyrus ended up getting a job in the royal sentry to help out.
The core has not been invented (yet) so monsters and humans have a lot of energy bills and other such bills to pay. While neither of them had to pay for the house itself after the king and queen gave it to them, Sans had to get another job to make sure they had enough money for food.
Papyrus doesn't push Sans to do things or think he's lazy as he can see Sans' energy limitations. On any days off, he let's Sans sleep for most of the day, knowing the royal guard job is far too hard on him.
He worries a lot for his brother and wants to do more but he doesn't have a lot of skills. He only ever knew how to fade into the background and sneak around which works well in his sentry job but not if he wants to take on a second job to let Sans have more time off. So the only thing he could think to do was go to Undyne and ask her for help to train him to be more confident and able to cook and take care of Sans
Papyrus does not want to be part of the royal guard in this au since he sees what it's doing to his brother and he can't also be too tired to look after them both. He just wants to learn how to cook, clean and gain more confidence so he could apply himself elsewhere.
Undyne agrees as a way to keep an eye on these two skeleton children.
I had a reader that managed to figure out where I was going with a few of my fics by pure accident and it was amazing. A couple times in the comments I was just like "are you in my computer?" I gave them a crumb and they found the bread

Due to Sans' low health and energy levels, Undyne decided it best he didn't fight with the rest of the royal guards and made him a scout. Similar to the sentries just with more training and reporting directly to her. She would use him as an 'eye in the sky' during any altercation or have him evacuate civilians while she dealt with a threat.
Similarly, Sans would rely on intel from his brother to help him do his job.

My girlfriend and I are laying quietly in the pitch black bedroom. In a soft whisper with no inflection, I said, “Someone is here.”
My girlfriend’s whole body stiffens and they go, “What the FUCK!”
They didn’t feel the little kitty feet I felt or have the context so instead of understanding a cat was joining us in bed they thought I was signaling the start of a horror movie.
i actually disagree! not to bring back a certain children's hospital and say "it's literally color theory" unironically, but... it's literally color theory. both of these color palettes are virtually complimentary and look pretty nice together
youve got reds, greens, and blues:
and purples, blues, yellows, and oranges:
(you'll have to click on the images to see the full thing, i don't want to put them one after the other and make this post even longer than it already is. sorry for the low resolution im doing this on my phone)
of course there's variation in the values and saturation, but imo that's a bit of a given ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
not to re-rail a post that OP himself intentionally derailed but I wanted to try out the palettes. The first one is made with the Girl Colors with no changes made to the values/saturation.
i think its ok.
The second one I tweaked the saturation and values a to my liking. Both are very low effort but as you can see I kinda got into the second one. Anyway I really like orange/purple/yellow as a color scheme so I had fun with this
wait omg it would be so cool if there was a different character for each color and they were all in one friend group together, i would LOVE to read a story about that
There's everything in that post. Colours I can't see because I'm colour-blind. Homestuck jokes. Casual transphobia. A children's hospital. That's history
