New Kids On The Block
Magic University has been all abuzz since the auditions for the new Junior Jocks went down. We only got to catch glimpses of their energetic personalities and wacky talents during the screening process, but needless to say, their enthusiam was infectious and everyone has been excited for the new kids to learn what life at Magic really about! Last Sunday, DJ Pat welcomed the freshmen to the station and gave them their first taste of how the Junior Jock program works, what to look forward to, and how to make the most of all the opportunities offered at Magic University.
They were excited to discover that beyond making playlists, mashing buttons, and wearing ultra cool headphones, they'll actually be attending workshops on things like acting, TV hosting, writing, courtside reporting, and even stand-up comedy! (Click those links to see the videos!) These all bring out various aspects of the communication skills they will need to become good DJs, event hosts, and maybe even TV personalities!
Excitement filled the radio booth and everyone had questions; From serious to very strange, DJ Pat was eager to answer them all with the detail and precision of the master samurai that he truly is.
“What is the schedule like? “ “Who picks our JJ names?”
And the question on everyone’s minds...
“WHEN DO WE GET ON AIR???”
The answer lit a fire in their eyes.
It was much sooner than some of them had thought.
At Magic, Junior Jocks get the opportunity to host our very own show (Sunday 6 AM- 10 AM y'all.)
But they also get to sit side by side with the best of the business, and practice their bantering skills on the The Big Meal, Strike Zone, and Positive Note.
The new batch will first tackle the responsibility of News Delivery, a task that might sound simple but is actually a critical skill for any up and coming DJ. Before the JJ’s go on air, they will have to prove that they have a good grasp on the communication basics, clarity of thought and speech, and most importantly, confidence.
The Junior Jocks then got to try their hand using the board equipment, transitioning between one song to another.
DJ Pat put on a little pressure playing a song and giving them only 50 seconds to choose a song that fit well and plug it a the right moment. Some handled it well, others were overwhelmed, but they all cheered each other on thru the thrill as the seconds ticked away and songs came to their end.
Some of the JJs began to express their feelings of excitment suddenly pairing with nervousness and anxiety. But DJ Pat made it very clear, The Junior Jock Program is not a competition to the top. It’s a process of personal development with mutual support. and that he and the other DJs will fully prepare them with knowing all that they will have to do in order to deliver successfully. And that’s when DJ Pat hit them with the secret of all secrets! “The secret of radio is... There is no secret!”
The Junior Jocks learned that though they have natural talent and charisma, honing their skills will still take practice and once you accept that making mistakes is part of the learning process, fears of judgment, failure, and criticism will disperse. (Though according to some famous DJs, pre-show jitters may never go away) Once relaxed and confident, the aspiring DJs will get to explore and experience the fun it really is, playing with listeners imagination and becoming the skilled conductors of Radio: “The Theater of the Mind.” Stay tuned in to Magic 89.9 and keep track of our blog for more updates, developments and insights on the behind the scenes journey.
Welcome to the Magic University!
It's the First Day of Training for the newest batch of Junior Jocks this year, and we're expecting big things from them! And rightly so: Many of the alumni from the program went on to do great things; some of whom we are now featuring in our 'Graduates' page. Do check it out, and please tell us what you think!
We'll also be adding interviews and Q&As with these graduates in the future, but for now, see if you can spot some familiar names & faces! :)
Auditions 2013: Hello, Stranger!
This year's Junior Jock Auditions was as amazing as every other: Scores of hopefuls lined up, signed up, and sweated it out to compete for the chance of becoming part of the Magic University!
The number of people who showed up was overwhelming. Red Box Eastwood was full to bursting, and for a time we had to regulate the number of auditionees coming in so as to avoid clogging the maze-like hallways. For the second round, we clogged up the halls outside the Magic 89.9 studio and caused all sorts of trouble.
The auditionees this year went all out, bringing lots of loud and sometimes slightly crazy talent to the table. But it’s not something that we Junior Jocks here at Magic would complain about. To quote a great inspiration of mine,
The bigga the betta
The bigga the betta
The bigga the betta
The betta the bigga!
-Nelly Furtada, 2012
One notable audition involved the crowning of a Miss Magic 89.9 2013 from the Junior Jocks, while another involved an incredibly avid superfan who confessed undying love for Junior Jock Gia.
Of course, nobody will be able to forget all the friendly people who congratulated JJ Champion, thinking that she had won! (Much time was spent sorting this out; she had to explain quite often that it was her moniker.)
And to add to all that, we even had Junior Jock Alumni come over to visit; DJs Tino and Justin (Who are now working at 99.5 Play FM) and DJ Boy Dale (of Wow FM) all hailed from the Junior Jock Program; they served as living proof of the efficacy and skill with which the program is handled.
We saw how everyone threw everything that they had at the auditions and how many of the hopefuls showed sass, spunk, and potential. Sadly, our DJs still had to make the difficult decision of picking the best of the best.
After Hours of sweating it out in the waiting rooms with the crazy Junior Jocks, 2 Rounds of Auditions, they finally made their decision.
For everyone who made it in, see you at the training sessions! For everybody else, we really do hope to see you next year (you insane beautiful people, you).
Without Further Ado, It is our pleasure to welcome these lovely people to the Magic University!
