The flavor on this card is pretty heavy handed, but it works. I don’t really sea any cannon-holes in the art, making the pinging ability perhaps questionable, but it could be that they’re only on the deck or on the other side, or maybe even the black things underneath the main sail are cannons. In any case, one damage seems a bit low for a giant ball of metal being hurled at a target, but as many have noted, small numbers lead to odd flavor in Magic. Case in point, this ship is a 4/3, meaning a mere three Squires could sink it, and one would even live to tell the tale.
The flag is also interesting, as it is clearly derived from a real-world symbol. Unless the Barbary coast is in Dominaria, I don’t particularly approve. A skull and crossbones is hardly an original concept, so it would not be unfair to give this a flavor pass, anyway.
Finally, it has long-since been errataed to be a “human pirate,” rather than a “ship.” I understand the reasoning behind this, as the ship itself isn’t the creature, but I don’t think I like it very much; there’s not much evidence that humans are aboard the ship, so I’d leave the typeline at “pirate” alone.
