2102 TOULANE AVENUE, CENDRE HOLLOW, LOUISIANA

A home that’s been in the Perroneau family for decades, it’s no surprise that the three bedroom, two bathroom home is willed to be left to James as soon as his mother, Ida, passes. Until then, three generations of Perroneaus occupy the building--Ida, James, and Maeby. The property is 1,936 sq. ft. and was built in 1930. The front patio is often occupied by Ida, who sips her sweet tea and reads her crime novels like it’s a nine to five job. The rear patio is often used to host dinners (mainly with the Dubois family) and is packed full of potted plants under Ida’s care.

“You’re the aide to the mayor, no?” James questioned with a lift of his brow. Shifting the package he held for the Vampire In Office so he’d have it free for a hand gesture, he continued. “I know you’ve only been loitering around Town Hall for a couple of years, but I assumed that meant you work here. I need this to get to Wilhelmina.”

James huffed as he heard the comment made, glancing from the man who he could tell hadn’t called the vandalism in but was witnessing it now to the broken, splintered fence in front of Joseph Lang’s home. “Joe’s divorced,” James started aloud to the stranger as he made his way over to the mess, picking up a piece of battered wood before continuing. “Ten years now. Left his wife for the Nanny and took the kids. Every year on the anniversary of their divorce, his wife drunkenly drives her pickup through his picket, but we never have any evidence to prosecute her on it. Nor do we really care to--Joe’s an asshole.” Dropping the piece of wood back on the ground, he kicked it into the pile of debris.

Miles glanced out through his own vehicle’s window and into that of the sheriff’s, trying to read the older man t no avail. “It’s grueling work, sheriff. You should know that better than anybody. Gotta take a break in between saving lives.”

“Right,” James murmured, eyeing the other with little to no expression lining his face. “As long as you’re doing work where work needs to be done, I don’t care what you do, pal.”

“If they’re with Maeby, I don’t know where they’d be,” James answered honestly. Even in a town so small, it was hard to keep track of his daughter now that she was grown and she knew it. “You check with Mags, though?”

Miles shot up from where he’d been lounging comfortably, eyes refocusing to the world as he tried to ID whoever had caught him sleeping in the passenger seat of his assigned ambulance. He’d been on the tail end of his lunch, he remembered, and had decided to close his eyes just for a second while he was still parked right off Main street.

“I’m a serious government employee, I swear.”

“Real comforting to see that you’re all doing important work down at the hospital,” James replied dryly from his squad car as he watched Miles shoot up. There was no teasing to his tone, but it was evident enough once you got to know James that he put little care into what happened around town so long as he didn’t have to deal with it directly.

“ hey, you — shh, shut up, just sit in the chair. let me test this out on you. it’s not gonna hurt or anythin’. ” mouth half full of a beignet and yorick panting beside her, adora leaned over the table at her little booth to call out to the nearest person. she’d finally set up the new airbrush machine. new, as in amazon had literally just delivered it earlier this morning.

“ i mean, unless i fuck up. but i won’t. proooomise. i just wanna have some fun with it before five kids in a row ask for a fairy or tiger stripes, or whatever the fuck it is kids want these days. ”

As soon as James heard shut up, he knew exactly who was talking to him. But he wasn’t quite sure who she thought she was talking to. Turning to face Adora at the booth he was glad Sylvia wasn’t running anymore--although he couldn’t imagine Adora’s run of the booth would come with any less complaints from the people of Cendre Hollow--he let out a ragged sigh.

“It’s only day one of the festival, Reveur, but if you airbrush any part of my body, I swear to Christ, I’ll arrest you again.”

“Hey! What the hell do you think you’re doing?” James exclaimed, watching as a group of teenagers dropped the stuffed animals they’d been trying to swipe from a ring toss booth set up in the center of town. The sheriff wasn’t in uniform--having opted for a pair of jeans and a thin henley to combat the humidity, despite the fact they were creeping towards the winter months--but the fact he remained strapped reminded him he was never really off duty. As the children he’d startled scattered, James begrudgingly made his way over to the discarded prizes, collecting them in his arms before offering them back to the older woman running the booth.

When he turned around to continue looking for the missing daughter he’d lost track of as soon as they made it to the Founder’s Festival, he found himself looking at a familiar face.

“Oh. Hey.”
