"He gave up the avatar state for her!!!" And i unironically cannot name a better way to piss katara off. Imagine your buddy gives up his ability to end a war thats lasted 100 years and ravaged your homeland, all because he wants to kiss you, and you aren't even sure if you return the sentiment. All of your and the whole world's hopes are riding on him and he just doesnt give a shit. Id kick his ass so hard
this argument is so incredibly narrow because it's clearly an intentional misunderstanding of their relationship, because aang tried to let katara go not once but TWICE, like the first time upon seeing her in danger and he reacted immediately to save her before he had even learned to let her go in order to access the avatar state, and she trusted he would save her like we can even see her face light up with hope in that very scene, and the second time he actually did let her go, he literally DIED!! it wasn't just katara but he had to let go of all earthy attachments beyond himself and his avatar power to unlock it, while yes it's his duties as the avatar and aang also loves katara and because his duties also meant he held the responsibility of protecting her life as much as protecting the world! because he loved her enough to prioritize her but also enough to let her go, he's done both of those things when it's necessary. so it's honestly baffling how people ignore the fact that there's an episode where katara opposes aang accessing the avatar state because of how much she cares about him and much aware of the toll it takes on him, and given how emotionally exhausted she already was during the serpent's pass there's absolutely no way katara would've wanted aang to let her go!! katara loves aang regardless of whatever circumstances the war brought with it and regardless of what people who don't ship them together choose to believe and losing him was one of the darkest moments of her life and she would've never wanted him to let her go just because it would help him reach the avatar state !
do you just troll tags all day or what
zutaraanti is such a loser desperate to get a good dunk that she harassed an Iranian woman who has been absent from online spaces because she is surviving bombardment. This is the type of special, deranged person who we're dealing with here.
Trigger Warnings: holocaust mention, anti semitism mention, hitler mention, nazi mention
Have you noticed how it's always "zutara is a son of Hitler/Holocaust survivor ship" and never, "zutara is a permanently disfigured son of Hitler who was himself thrown into a gas chamber by Hitler as a child, for daring to express empathy for young soldiers who were to be deliberately used as cannon fodder, who is likely permanently disabled (loss of sight/hearing on one side) from his Hitler father, who at 16 made his own decision to turn against his family, who went out of his way to throw his weight behind the resistance/allied forces, who risked his life to free high profile POWs and who did everything in his power to ensure a Holocaust survivor got to mete whatever justice she saw fit against the man who murdered her parents, and finally received further disfigurement when he almost died catching a grenade that was intended for her in the middle of a battle he was fighting to oust his genocidal family from the regime/Holocaust survivor ship"?
The weird thing is, when you put it like that, the whole real world comparison exercise starts to feel incredibly absurd, like one of those bizarre Trolley problem variants that are so far removed from reality that any conclusion you can draw from it feels practically worthless. It starts to sound like the kind of thing that's counter-productive to even try to construct real world parallels to, especially for the purpose of judging or condemning it as morally insupportable, precisely because it's difficult to come up with any historical, grounded examples that could provide even a tangentially similar frame of reference. The entire thought experiment starts to feel disrespectful, because of how divorced it is from reality, which is rather inconvenient when you're trying to do a "let's use a real world example to show how icky this ship is" thing in the first place.
On the other hand, if you get rid of those troublesome details and just keep it as "son of genocidal regime/genocide survivor", then that's simple enough for someone to picture, and then it does sound pretty icky. There's even room to gesture vaguely to a redemption arc while you're keeping fingers pointed squarely at those who ought to be ashamed of themselves.
Sure, people might accuse you of making shallow whataboutisms, or even being outright intellectually dishonest, but you can always pre-empt any allegation of bad-faith if you just loudly accuse your opponents of doing it first. Bonus points if you declare that only someone engaging in bad faith could possibly take any issue with your gritty reality checks, cuz then it will sound like your clever insight struck a nerve and now your properly-chastised critics can only childishly deflect.
But I'm sure none of this is intentional.

Zutara Family
figured out why k/taang bothered me as a kid.
Most children's media I watched back then was primarily directed at young boys, and atla was no different. Aang is the main character, and the center of the main romance (although this was very much not the focus of the show), which is mostly shown from his perspective. The writers also talk about it from his POV. Katara is the cute older girl who sees Aang like a little kid she needs to take care of. She loves him "like a babysitter, like a little brother". But there's the wish fulfillment; even though you’re a goofy kid, the pretty older girl likes you back. I had seen that dynamic, that perspective, in kids media over and over and over again. It was always the girl who changed her mind. And as a girl who couldn't relate, it always felt like watching her get worn down. (disclaimer: these were my feelings, I'm aware they don't reflect the writers' intentions)
K/taang, from its inception, right from the mouths of the writers, was always about what Aang wanted, his wish fulfillment. What little boys would want to see.
The difference in zutara is that it’s not a male-centered fantasy. It’s not that the girl will come around eventually, it’s that the guy has to work and change to be her friend. It's female-centric. Even k/taang fans seem to recognize this, although they view it pejoratively. “You like Zuko cause he’s hot and you project onto Katara” Look, I’m gay so no I don’t want to date Zuko, but yeah womanhood is central to Katara's arc and so I relate to her more than I do Zuko or Aang. Of course the idea that someone would change to gain your respect is more appealing than being worn down into liking someone you just previously treated like your child. And hey! Romance is wish fulfillment! I’m sorry, is that supposed to be shameful?
K/taang fans have this constant misunderstanding that zutara is shallow and so are its fans. It's all about the aesthetic appeal of Zuko over Aang. Honestly the way they talk about it sometimes smacks of misogyny. No you can’t find this relationship deep or meaningful, you just think Zuko is hot. You don’t like their dynamic or development, you just project onto Katara because you think Zuko is hot. You dont like zutara over k/taang because they’re completely different kinds of ships that appeal to different tastes, you just think Zuko is hot and Aang isn't.
Because women can’t possibly think deeply about these things, they’re shallow and insipid, obviously. Do you hear yourselves?
I like Katara and Zuko together more because k/taang reminds me of every other male fantasy I had to see women be accessories to. Katara may be her own character in the show, with an arc and development and independence, but in her romance with Aang, she's just his girl.
He's so
Drawing Zutara to get me out of artblock 🙏
It Didn’t Really Matter Whether A.ang Was Right Or Not
TW: There’s a brief mention of weight loss in this post, so just a heads up for anyone who might need it.
Whenever it comes to shipping discourse in regards to The Southern Raiders, the main topic of a lot of the discussions is whether or not A.ang’s philosophy was right or Zuko’s. But frankly, I actually don’t think it really matters all that much in the grander scheme of what Katara needed from the people around her in that episode.
Aang may have been right that violence wasn't the answer, but that doesn't mean he knows what Katara needs emotionally, because she did not need to be badgered about forgiving the man who murdered her mother, that's for sure. She didn't forgive him and I can't see a way that Aang's words helped that situation. Like you said, they made it worse, because all he did was make Katara feel angry and hurt and damage his relationship with her.
After messing with this for days I’ve reached the conclusion that it just ISN’T GOING TO GET ANY BETTER and I give up. This is based off a gif that I lost, oops. I’m in the process of coloring it but WOW DOES THAT SUCK so who knows if that’ll ever actually happen
So basically, all you need to take away from this is that I tried!
Can’t believe my babies are engaged in the new film!!! Let me live in my delusion, it’s a happy place!
All credit for the below pic goes to @jellystreet. Not sure if it’s a screenshot or an edit but either way, it makes me happy.
Kind of actually wild to me that they finally voiced the issue of Katara being forced into a maternal role because of her mother’s death in season 3 and then had her open up to only one other character about the severity of how traumatic that event had been for her and it was in the episode where she was allowed to step out of that maternal role and try to reclaim apart of her childhood, facilitated by that same character. AND THEN! That character sacrificed himself for her in an extremely similar fashion to how her mother had, the woman whose role she had to bear, symbolizing him taking that burden from her and effectively putting her back in a position of being cared for instead being the caretaker while also granting her the opportunity to realize that if she had the power to save her mother she could’ve and would’ve through saving him.
all this then they’re not supposed to interact ever again bc zuko is JUST aang’s friend????? make it make sense
I could say something like "hardcore kataangers and zutarians should kiss and hold hands". But only one side of the conflict likes "enemies to lovers" so this would not work out.
