Trigger Warnings: holocaust mention, hitler mention
Antis: zutara is a son of hitler/holocaust survivor ship and zutara shippers are racist cowards for refusing to acknowledge that dynamic! Zutara shippers who don't honestly address this deserve to be harassed!
Me: lol this is obvious bait but fuck it, why not, I'll "acknowledge" your analogy. In fact, I see your shallow, disingenuous Hitler analogy and raise you one that actually reflects the sacrifices and abuses these characters endured, which you neglected to include for some reason - say, wait a minute, doesn't this whole exercise feel really insensitive, disrespectful, performative and intellectually dishonest? Do you think maybe these types of analogies are really distasteful and maaaaybe we shouldn't be invoking Godwin's law for a fucking ship war?
Antis: ...omg whaaaaaaat how dare you construct Hitler analogies to defend your ship! How insensitive and performative! Disgusten!!!
Yet another horribly stupid thread from a non-Buddhist that uses Buddhism to "defend" Aang. Apparently OP was even buying followers to increase the engagement of their account so more people could be exposed to their blatant misinformation. They had an alt account that they deactivated when they were caught confessing to it.
They share similarities but that doesn't mean Buddhism is just a branch of Hinduism, Buddhism arose as a rejection of Hinduism. The two religions are oppositional. This is like saying Christianity is just a "branch" of Judaism when Christianity has a deep history of violent antisemitism.
Many Tibetan Buddhists (such as myself!) have expressed their dislike of ATLA, particularly Aang and the Air Nomads for playing into the Shangri-la stereotype. Tibetan Buddhists don't object to priests getting married because they are NOT monks. On the other hand, Air Nomad society is composed entirely of monks and nuns. His Holiness the Dalai Lama has said that Buddhist monks getting married is completely forbidden, and the Buddha himself has said that non-celibate monks will go to Hell. It is completely blasphemous to our religion. A monk being a celibate is FAR more important than him being a vegetarian. Are you a moron?
Really showing your ignorance here. Both are called "monks" in English but they are not actually monks at all. A monk must follow the Vinaya. The warrior Shaolin are not monks and in many cases they are not even Buddhists, they are like secular guards who live in the monastery. Meanwhile Japan has no tradition of Buddhist monks whatsoever. All Japanese "monks" are actually priests. Bryke didn't know about the difference because they are idiots, and so are you.
You do know that many people have spoken up against the Fire Nation for being a mix of different cultures too, right? At least the reason for the Fire Nation being a mix of cultures was so that they wouldn't be creating a direct parallel to a real world culture since they were portrayed as the villains of the series. But you're coming in here with the claim that Aang is a Buddhist, therefore making fun of him for being bald is racism to Buddhists even though Aang himself is a racist caricature of Buddhism.
Of course Buddhists would reject to their religion being considered Hinduism? Some Hindus will claim Buddhism as a branch of their own religion to deny a unique Buddhist religious identity because India is plagued with fascists who want to create a Hindu ethnostate, and Buddhism's disappearance in India can be attributed to the assimilation of Buddhism into Hinduism.
What the fuck is the claim of Korea and Japan coming from the same culture as China? Korea and Japan are heavily influenced by Chinese culture but they didn't just arise from China, all three are separate nations with distinct histories. Holy shit, this is even more ridiculous than saying Buddhism is a branch of Hinduism.
Aang being bald has nothing to do with his religion, being bald is a choice for Air Nomads to allow them to feel the air better. Bryke appropriated Buddhist aesthetics and none of the meaning. Once again, you go on about his vegetarianism when vegetarianism for monks isn't as big of an issue as celibacy. The Vinaya explicitly allows monks to eat meat, but under no circumstances can they ever be sexually active. Next.
Fellas, is is racist to mix up Chinese and Japanese culture because they both have similarities like using chopsticks, logographic writing, and Confucianism?
"you cannot speak for an entire group of people" Yet here you are speaking on behalf of Tibetans and Buddhists when you are literally neither of those things yourself.
How many times do I have to fucking say it? Aang and the Air Nomads in general are disrespectful of Buddhism. Their very existence in a highly popular children's television series is more racist than people calling them bald. Now you ignorant Aang stans are even spreading misinformation about Buddhism, a real religion, in order to defend your Orientalist fictional fave.
It is performative activism. You only care about Buddhism when people dislike Aang even though lots of Buddhists themselves don't like Aang. You will get mad at bald jokes because you claim it's offensive towards Buddhists yet you're a rabid Kataang shipper (because Buddhism suddenly isn't so important to you when it makes your ship look bad, right?). You are more concerned about a fictional character getting insulted than the character's very existence being the legacy of centuries of racist, Orientalist stereotypes that are disrespectful of real world Buddhist cultures.
I was raised Buddhist as a kid, and Buddhist monasticism comes up fairly frequently in Vietnamese folklore (Like in the stories of Quan Âm Thị Kính, Mục Kiền Liên etc). I can attest to everything said here and also provide a bit more context for people who are confused, because the point about Aang's chastity (and lack thereof) is actually NOT a "whataboutism" in regards to his hair (and lack thereof). They are actually symbolically connected - or at least, they're supposed to be. Let me explain:
So in East Asian cultures, hair is typically considered sacred and beautiful, for both men and women. Traditionally both genders wore their hair long, and only cut their hair during specific ceremonies/rituals. Monastic life is considered an extreme example, where both monks and nuns keep a shaved head for life, and the reason for this will make you laugh when you consider the context of this discussion ("stop saying Aang is ugly for being bald! His baldness is an homage to Buddhist monks and your mockery is racist!"):
Buddhist monks and nuns shave their heads to make themselves unappealing to the opposite sex, in order to commit to their lives of celibacy.
That is why they shave their heads. It is not an aesthetic choice nor is it incidental to their celibacy - it's literally a way to diminish their own sex appeal so they can remain pure and chaste.
So, to recap:
1. Bryke design their main character to have the dress and appearance of a Buddhist monks, including the shaved head,
2. They then create a romantic subplot for this main character, and give it such focus that they even bake the "will they won't they" into said character's character arc, and his ability to defeat the Big Bad (The Guru/Crossroads of Destiny),
3. They ultimately make this romantic subplot canon, either not knowing or not caring about the importance of chastity for Buddhist monks despite literally incorporating the visual symbols of said chastity into the character's appearance - again, I emphasise, the baldness that literally codes for UNATTRACTIVE -> SEXUALLY UNAVAILABLE -
4. (Some) fans who aren't thrilled with the portrayal of the romance and/or the Buddhist elements mock the character for having an ugly bald head, and then:
5. Aang stans get Very Upset, and write long diatribes about how calling Aang's baldness ugly is an insult to his Buddhist-coded character design.
The irony here is genuinely hilarious.
Celibacy is a defining distinction between monastics and the laity. Forcing monastics to marry has even been implemented as a policy to undermine Buddhist institutions and facilitate cultural genocide.
Celibacy Celibacy (brahmacariya) is a foundational discipline for monastics and is universal across all Buddhist traditions. The renunciation of sex, marriage, and reproduction is seen as the preeminent factor in separating the life of a monastic from that of a householder (non-monastic). Because celibacy is fundamental to monastic culture, the persecution of Buddhists has frequently involved forcing monastics to abandon celibacy and marry in order to assimilate them into lay society (laicization). Anticelibacy and pronatalist policies targeting Buddhist monastics existed in the Empire of Japan[11] and in Tibet under Chinese rule.[12]
Tibet While Tibetan Buddhism generally adheres to a Mahāyāna tradition that values vegetarianism, many Tibetan monks eat meat due to the harsh climatic conditions of the Tibetan Plateau, which make a plant-based diet difficult. This practice is consistent with allowances in the Vinaya, which permit monks to consume meat under certain conditions.[13] Before the annexation of Tibet by the People's Republic of China, a significant portion of the country’s male population was ordained. Today, this is no longer the case. Following the 1959 Tibetan uprising, Chinese authorities forced thousands of monks to abandon the monastic life and become "ordinary" citizens by marrying. Celibacy is a fundamental requirement for monks and nuns in all sects of Buddhism, and monastics may marry only if they renounce their vows and return to lay life.[12] In the Gelug school, monastic discipline is heavily emphasized, and the Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama are always monks.[14] The heads of the Kagyu school lineages are also usually monks.[15][16] However, in some schools of Tibetan Buddhism, there are some important clerical roles filled by lay practitioners who are allowed to marry. The Nyingma school has no central authority, and includes a mixture of celibate monks and non-celibate ngakpas. Ngakpas are expected to follow practices that differ significantly from those of monks, such as living in households rather than monasteries and wearing their hair long instead of shaving it.[17][18] In the Sakya school, the Sakya Trizin is a lay tantric and can never be a monk, as leadership is passed down through a hereditary patriarchal system among male members of the Khön family.[19][20]
Japan Japanese Buddhism is uniquely distinguished by its rejection of celibate monasticism and the absence of ordination under the Vinaya. Monks (bhikkhu) and nuns (bhikkhuni) do not exist in Japanese Buddhism, having been entirely replaced by ordained lay clergy.[3] In some Asian countries, an adage criticizing the lack of a true monastic community in Japanese Buddhism is, "Buddhist temples do exist, but there are no Buddhist monks."[32] Saichō, the founder of the Tendai school, preferred ordaining clergy under the Bodhisattva vows rather than the Vinaya. The Bodhisattva vows gradually spread throughout Japanese Buddhism and replaced the Vinaya, but the vows still maintained celibacy as essential to monasticism. The origin of non-celibate monasticism in Japan can be traced to Jōdo Shinshū, which allowed priests and priestesses to marry, influenced by the sect's founder, Shinran. The Vinaya lineage became extinct in Japan after being replaced by the Boddhisattva vows, making it impossible to ordain new monks. Since the Vinaya is fundamental to the ordination of Buddhist monastics, Japanese Buddhist clergy cannot be regarded as monks (bhikkhu) or nuns (bhikkhunī), but rather constitute a distinct class of lay clergy and temple administrators.[3][1] In Japan, non-celibate clergy are commonly referred to as sōryo (僧侶) and are regarded as distinct from bhikkhu, known in Japanese as biku (比丘). While they are often labeled “monks” and “nuns” in English, some consider this terminology misleading and offensive, as it conflates lay Buddhist clergy with fully ordained bhikkhu and bhikkhunī. In English, non-celibate Buddhist clergy are more accurately referred to as “priests” and “priestesses”.[33] However, the practice of non-celibate monasticism was never widespread outside of Jōdo Shinshū until the Imperial Japanese government enacted the Nikujiku Saitai Law (肉食妻帯) during the Meiji Restoration. Through the lens of Japanese nationalism, Buddhism came to be viewed as a suspicious and foreign religion associated with China. In an effort to secularize the Buddhist clergy and promote the newly established religion of State Shinto, it was declared that clergy of any Buddhist sect were free to marry.[34][35][36] Japanese Buddhist clergy were also permitted to drink alcohol, eat meat, and raise children in so-called “family temples”.[33] This movement, known as the Haibutsu kishaku of the Meiji era, resulted in the destruction of tens of thousands of Buddhist temples across Japan, the forced laicization of Buddhist clergy, widespread attacks on Buddhist doctrine and praxis, and other repressive anti-Buddhist measures.[37] The spread of non-celibate monasticism across the Japanese colonial empire was part of Imperial Japan's systematic efforts to eradicate the cultures of its colonial territories. Japanese Buddhist missionaries in colonial Korea declared that Korean Buddhism needed to be reformed under their guidance, and traditional Korean Buddhist practices were replaced with Japanese ones in an effort to assimilate Koreans into Japanese society.[38] Monks from pro-Japanese factions began adopting Japanese customs, including marriage, having children, and living with their families in monasteries. In 1970, the Korean Seon community split over this issue: the larger Jogye Order remains fully celibate, while the smaller Taego Order retains non-celibate priests as a remnant of Japanese colonialism.[39] The Empire of Japan also strategically employed sexual violence against Buddhist monastics in China as a form of psychological warfare to weaken Chinese religious institutions and resistance to Japanese imperialism. Because Buddhist monastics take vows of celibacy, Japanese soldiers raped Buddhist nuns and forced monks to rape women during the Nanjing Massacre in an effort to spiritually violate them.[40]
You can read more about this on Wikipedia.
Adding on to this because it’s mindboggling that zutaranti recently made these tweets:
One of the policies involved in the Sinicization of Tibet literally included pressuring Buddhist monks to marry. This is well documented! How can zutaranti claim to care so much about Buddhism and even bring up the Sinicization of Tibet to defend Kataang? Do they not realize how contradictory that is if they genuinely believe Aang is a Tibetan Buddhist monk?
I saw zutaranti claim to be Buddhist, but I’m calling bullshit on this because they were chatting with someone who referred to themselves as “part Buddhist”. That’s simply not possible because Buddhism is not an ethnoreligion. The person who claimed to be “part Buddhist” is obviously ignorant, and the fact that zutaranti didn’t notice how strange it was signals to me that they don’t know anything about Buddhism either.
I am not Tibetan, so I hope I am not overstepping, but it really is shocking how performative (and outright wrong) their “activism” is.
I thought Zutaranti was "taking a break", is she back already? That was a short break 😂
Also wrt the whole "using Hitler analogies to defend shipping", istg she better not be talking about my meta that was specifically a rebuttal to an anti who had invoked Godwin's law to attack zutara and zutara shippers with. My post that literally deconstructed how insensitive, disrespectful, performative and intellectually dishonest it was to make comparisons to some Nazi/Jew romance "archetype" in order to bash a fictional ship and the shippers who shipped it 💀
i’ve only followed from the outskirts, but it’s crazy how many people are surprised that the zutaranti story ended this way. the last few weeks have been such a mess of cruelty towards zutara artists and bloggers, harassment, bad faith engagement, trivialization of real life issues… it was obvious that someone was going to take it too far. zk accounts were WARNING zutaranti&co that that certain jokes were problematic and harmful, that mistagging was inappropriate, that the use of real life issues to “win” arguments was hurtful, insensitive and racist. fell on deaf years until it got to such a bad point. and kas are still insisting with this stupid lie and justification of “fine, one of us got too far but zutaras are bad/annoying/harassers and started it!!” yet they can never name one guilty account unless they are taking a screenshot of someone who HAS THEM BLOCKED and dogpiling on them. they’ve spent so much time insisting with this narrative that zks are the “bad apples” of the fandom and therefore deserve any and all harassment that their space has turned into a cesspool and they don’t even notice.
same. i didn’t want to involve myself knee deep into that horrid hellhole of repeated, hateful, illogical discourse. the reason why zutaranti was given such a huge platform to spread her bs takes is that kas - on a general scale - agreed with her! they loved the numbers and the ratio and the constant dogpiling that targeted any notable zk acc - they loved infiltrating zk spaces and harassing users and using real life issues to justify their awful, toxic behavior, all in the name of propagating the Superiority of their Canon Ship. zutaranti did all of that - the minimization of real life issues to fit their narratives, the constant harassment and bullying, the problematic jokes and memes - for a…..cartoon ship…….that aired in 2000s…….like that’s what’s flabbergasting to me. you do not see the same kind of anger or vitriol or dedication in advocacy for actual, real-life issues! they bank on their Moral Superiority Tug of War when atla itself was created by orientalist white men who smushed varying asian cultures into stereotypical portrayals and called it a day! they’re backpedaling now by saying they’ve always called on her bs (but was too afraid to “speak up”, whatever the fuck that means) or that it was two-sided, both zks and kas are at fault - or somehow they go as far to stretch that they look “as bad” as zks now. well, no, they look fucking worse. even now, their apologies are half-meant and barely apologies at all. they’re genuinely weird people who are so convinced of their own superiority and Rightness that it’s just - polluting the fandom. zks take to their own spaces - kas have no idea how to do that. this was a lesson in the making but i’m pretty sure barely any of them will pick it up. lol
Hello Zutarians! As you may know, this month has been particularly rough (with that Zutaraanti account.)
After seeing the Zutaraanti account make anti Black statements (which affects me as a Black person) I've decided to do a deep dive on the Zutaraanti and their gaggle of friends.
If anyone has any documentation on the Zutaraanti and any of their "friends" I'd appreciate it!
The reason I'm doing this is because a lot of them who I know are harassers, have been deleting posts, pretending like they were ALWAYS against them.
And it's pissing me off. The rest of the fanbase are either condoning or ignoring the rampant harassment campaigns they've been going on.
I've only joined the fandom since April and the hell I've witnessed has been far too great for me to ignore.
So if you have anything you'd like to contribute, I'd appreciate it. 👍
I have receipts for you, can I dm them to you?
Why Do Certain Ships Become So Popular? (And Why Should Writers Rethink When They Do?) - Part 1
(Damn, look who’s showing up ten years late to this discussion with Starbucks…)
Hey guys, just want to start with a preface here: I’ve recently been in several separate conversations about why certain ships become so popular, what leads people (and woman in particular) to ship so much, why certain fandoms become over-zealous in their shipping, and why so many slash ships manage to appeal to female viewers… And while I certainly don’t have scientific or even very thorough answers for most of these, I came across a line in a scholarly journal article recently that struck me like lightning, because it managed to express in just a few words a very complex idea that’s been slowly ruminating in my mind for months:
Many fans, particularly women, are disappointed by the contrived romantic story lines that are appended to ‘buddy’ series and movies in which the real emotional energy is between the heroic male leads (or between hero and villain) (McLelland 2006). [Source]
Emotional energy. There it is, the exact phrase I’d been looking for when trying to talk about the extreme popularity of ships like Klance, Sheith, Soriku, NaruSasu, and even het ships like Zutara.
Why do so many ships that have minimal chance of becoming canon become so beloved in fandoms? Why are so many fans attracted to potential relationships between characters the creators never intended to write romantically (or at least never intended to deliver on)?
I’ve said it before and it bears repeating: there’s no one, simple answer for shipping. People ship for an uncountable number of personal, unique reasons, and any attempt at “explaining” shipping will always be reductive and over-simplified. Nevertheless, once this hit me, I couldn’t unthink it:
Look at where the “real emotional energy” is in a story… And that’s where you’re most likely to find the fandom’s most popular ships.

Zuko + Katara parallels in Crossroads of Destiny and The Southern Raiders
Something tells me that they wanted to make sure that if the audience didn’t get it the first time, they’d get it the second time.
How I love me some rule of three 🥰
"Sorry to burst your bubble, but Zuko paid more attention to Katara as a genocide survivor than Aang ever did."
people expect those affected by the fire nation's crime to be perfect victims while zuko's active participation and his family being directly responsible for katara's trauma so taking accountability on his part is literally necessary, like this is equivalent to saying zutaras paid more attention to zuko as an abused child than they ever care about aang or katara as genocide survivors (but it's facts) lol
Aren’t you the one who mocked an Iranian Zutarian last week while she’s been under bombardment for months
this is the main thing i do not like about zk’s (especially on on here). you guys are so wholly illogical in many of your arguments. all you can do is resort to cheap ad-homs about things that have no logical bearing on the current topic at hand.
it is so funny that you guys are accusing op of caring “only about pixels and not real people”, when you yourself are not actually defending any iranians from harm but instead.. using them as rhetorical cudgel to feign moral superiority in a ship war… how odd. is that defintionally even more performative?
also not even to add what an absurd take this is? why are you equating a snarky "haha you you were wrong" quote tweet to somebody making fun of iranian bombardment. she didn't say "your country is being bombed your opinion doesn't matter". it's a tragic situation yes, but tragedy does not render somebody immune from disagreement especially in what is (and i qoute) a "cartoon ship". nor does it make said disagreement harassment. all you have done is snuck in an unsubstantiated claim that the tweet was even about the iranian zutara's suffering at all. a completely useless point of view that can't even be applied universally because it would be frankly insane! please, just use words correctly.
but let’s not talk about the war on iran without some aid:
Middle East war forces families to flee. We provide life-saving aid in Lebanon, Iran and the region. Donate now to save more lives and reduc
Iran
Sneezy was directly quoting me, a Palestinian, and other Arab friends of Yuki's, the Iranian in question. I had no spoons to answer, so she did it for me. MAYBE don't make assumptions where someone very much, the day before, was mass-called out by the WANA community for being racist because of pixels. If you don't know what happened, shut the f up and look into the situation instead of defending a known harasser who equates real genocides with fake and can't even properly apologize for it without victim-blaming and going into whataboutism:
im sorry to say it but you being palestinian and your friends being arab literally does nothing against my point? it’s ad-hom and a completely absurd take coming from anybody, your ethnic background doesn’t suddenly give you a position of authority here. i also really like how you immediately resorted to identity you cannot say somebody was “racist over pixels” without sufficient proof of it. the word racism has a meaning it isn’t just something you’re offended by that attacks somebody you like. i could say you telling me to l shut the fuck up” is racist, because i’m a victim of war too. infact i just had somebody i know die because of it yesterday. i thought that grants me immunity of criticism according to your logic. but does that make anything i said true? no. lmfao please be normal.
the tweet you’ve shown me doesn’t matter either tbh. who are you to police somebodies emotional reactions to a fictional and real life genocide? you think you hold this weird moral superiority over when she herself is deeply affected by it? is that not blaming a victim for what she feels… hmmm… sounds a lot like victim blaming right. yeah don’t be weird babe. clearly that care doesn’t equate to giving them the same moral weight, let’s put our thinking caps on.
again, all you’ve done is asserted my original point that all you guys do is spout illogical nonsense and expect people to agree. show what actual racist thing zutaranti said (and not just something performative bs). so no i won’t shut up you absolute weirdo.
Whataboutism, media illiteracy and your own WANA racism, I see, by declaring what's racist against us or not over us (and for pixels). The victim herself spoke out about this, btw:
And Zutaraanti deleted her original post because of mass reporting for racism. You can see the screenshot Sneezy sends. You can also check Zutaraanti's Twitter for her replies, double-downs and awful non-apology, because she's proud of her racism. I'm not doing it for you because you're lazy and think this is about a ship war. Also, to make this bigger for others who actually care, look at the dates of the tweets and what's being asked—"I didn't know" my ass.
Me telling you shut up wasn't because I was worried about what you had to say, but a warning you'll expose your own stupidity and bigotry. You use these words but obviously have no idea what they mean. I recommend learning about micro-aggressions, passive racism and even stochastic terrorism, which both you and Antizutara are courting in rhetoric.
And FYI, I call out bigotry against my own regularly on this blog, no matter the topic. I could give less crap about fiction when real people get hurt (which is the CORRECT priority—I don't care how you feel about fake genocides, but if you go after real people for a fake one, congrats, you're an ass at best, imperial DARVO at worst). Anyway, those who want to seek the truth, here is Antizutara's Twitter:
I advise blocking both these clowns. If your takeaway from this is, "West Asians are fake activists over a ship" rather than "West Asians are angry one of our own under bombardment is being harassed for a ship," then block me, too—I have no need for trash.
All of this over drawings btw

How many times do I need to mention Iran before I can call out zutaranti?

What’s the weirdest insult you heard as a Zutara shipper? Me personally I had someone call me racist for saying Katara did not want to be a healer and had to grow into that aspect of her bending.
Not an insult per se, but I did once get a comment that started with "the problem with zutara is it's just too interesting" and that lives in my head rent-free to this day. 😂
Trigger Warnings: holocaust mention, anti semitism mention, hitler mention, nazi mention
Have you noticed how it's always "zutara is a son of Hitler/Holocaust survivor ship" and never, "zutara is a permanently disfigured son of Hitler who was himself thrown into a gas chamber by Hitler as a child, for daring to express empathy for young soldiers who were to be deliberately used as cannon fodder, who is likely permanently disabled (loss of sight/hearing on one side) from his Hitler father, who at 16 made his own decision to turn against his family, who went out of his way to throw his weight behind the resistance/allied forces, who risked his life to free high profile POWs and who did everything in his power to ensure a Holocaust survivor got to mete whatever justice she saw fit against the man who murdered her parents, and finally received further disfigurement when he almost died catching a grenade that was intended for her in the middle of a battle he was fighting to oust his genocidal family from the regime/Holocaust survivor ship"?
The weird thing is, when you put it like that, the whole real world comparison exercise starts to feel incredibly absurd, like one of those bizarre Trolley problem variants that are so far removed from reality that any conclusion you can draw from it feels practically worthless. It starts to sound like the kind of thing that's counter-productive to even try to construct real world parallels to, especially for the purpose of judging or condemning it as morally insupportable, precisely because it's difficult to come up with any historical, grounded examples that could provide even a tangentially similar frame of reference. The entire thought experiment starts to feel disrespectful, because of how divorced it is from reality, which is rather inconvenient when you're trying to do a "let's use a real world example to show how icky this ship is" thing in the first place.
On the other hand, if you get rid of those troublesome details and just keep it as "son of genocidal regime/genocide survivor", then that's simple enough for someone to picture, and then it does sound pretty icky. There's even room to gesture vaguely to a redemption arc while you're keeping fingers pointed squarely at those who ought to be ashamed of themselves.
Sure, people might accuse you of making shallow whataboutisms, or even being outright intellectually dishonest, but you can always pre-empt any allegation of bad-faith if you just loudly accuse your opponents of doing it first. Bonus points if you declare that only someone engaging in bad faith could possibly take any issue with your gritty reality checks, cuz then it will sound like your clever insight struck a nerve and now your properly-chastised critics can only childishly deflect.
But I'm sure none of this is intentional.
I'm sure someone has already mentioned this, but the fact that waterbenders are more powerful on a full moon is so interesting, zutara wise
Because the difference between the moon phases (new -> waxing -> full -> waning) isn't related to its position above or below the horizon, but specifically how much sunlight is reflected to the planet 😂
(No sunlight = new moon, maximum sunlight = full moon)
Katara having peak power when Zuko's element is providing maximum "fuel" is some intriguing symbolism even if I'm sure it was never intended as such 😂
PLAY THEIR FUCKING SONG AND LET THEM FUCKING KISS YOU FUCKING COWARDS
Zuko told Katara about how he got his scar in the crystal catacombs. It is so heavily implied I would basically say it is canon. She is the only person in the gaang he felt safe enough to tell, or anyone at all, really, even though they weren’t even friends yet.
This complements how Katara only opens up to Zuko out of the whole gaang about the vivid details of her mother’s murder.
In this essay, I—
Okay time for the essay.
So we start here basically.
Katara is yelling at Zuko after he's thrown into the "cell" with her. She starts going on about Ozai, which prompts Zuko to respond, given what Ozai has done to him — because at this point, Katara has no idea about Zuko or why he's hunting Aang or what got him out here. That's how the scene sets.
It's then that she is understandably enraged at this response, and brings up her mother. Then, Zuko tells her that he, too, lost his mother at the hands of the Fire Nation — at the hands of Ozai.
So when we head back to this scene, it's heavily implied they continued talking. Zuko simply saying "I'm sorry, that's something we have in common" would unlikely take Katara from her upset anger back down to calm empathy.
Given that, we can deduce they kept talking about what happened with the Fire Nation, their mothers, and based on the next part of the conversation — his scar and Ozai.
……did it just take us 20 years to figure out something glaringly obvious
I don't actually think this necessarily implies they went over the scar? Because, like, we know they didn't go over Katara's mother, because Zuko didn't know what happened in TSR. I think they must have talked about something, but I always assumed Katara just stopped yelling and they were just... there with each other for a while, before Katara decided to apologize, maybe with a tiny bit of discussion of some adjacent stuff.
@sneezypeasy do you have any insight from the Crossroads of Destiny script, by any chance?
Unfortunately the script was very vague about this. Iirc it just described what we saw and there was nothing to hint at what (if anything) could fill the gaps. I was curious too, but oh well.
