listen to me. hear me when i say this because I hate seeing this take continuously crop up:

sweetheart in the trilogy is not meant to be a term of endearment.

Sweetheart is a sarcastic, condescending, and mocking word used to undermine and tease Katniss. It is not a word of endearment:

By the end of the session, I am no one at all.

Haymitch started drinking somewhere around witty, and a nasty edge has crept into his voice.

"I give up, sweetheart. Just answer the questions and try not to let the audience see how openly you despise them." (THG)

And if that’s not enough, what about arguably the meanest scene in the whole trilogy:

Haymitch belches, filling the air with white liquor fumes. "What is it, sweetheart? More boy trouble?" I don't know why, but this hurts me in a way Haymitch rarely can. It must show on my face, because even in his drunken state, he tries to take it back. "Okay, not funny." (Mockingjay)

It’s not Katniss being an “unreliable narrator” and not picking up on his tone. She understands Haymitch better than she understands herself. Sweetheart needs to be a nasty, condescending name to make the development of haymitch’s warmth more impactful. Over the arc of the first book, sweetheart develops from a rude name to a sweeter one. Having it start nice, always be nice, deprives Haymitch of that character change.

my recs are pretty much always something written by @the-sinking-ship, @thecouchsofa, @hoko-onchi-writes, @wolfpants, @tackytigerfic, @shiftylinguini, @dodgerkedavra, or @citrusses (this is not a comprehensive list by any means!)

for some actual fic recs though (not including anyone mentioned above; by default read all of their AO3s from top to bottom):

the first drarry fic that i read after getting back into fandom was Running on Air by eleventy7, and it still haunts me

adored Rookie Moves by peu_a_peu and gobbled it up in like 2 days (also has some of my favorite drarry lines)

Heartbeat by eight_of_wands; the atmosphere in this one and the glimpses of New Orleans are just stunning

You always open (petal by petal) by birdsofshore (actually this is another writer whose entire AO3 is highly recommended)

Stop All the Clocks (This Is the Last Time I'm Leaving Without You) by firethesound (mind the tags!)

Grounds for Divorce by Tepre, which is i think the second drarry fic i read after RoA? i can't remember but yeah loved this one too

The Claiming of Grimmauld Place by bixgirl1 (sentient houses! sentient houses!)

ok i'll stop there BUT i guarantee you every single person who's mentioned in this post has their own favorites as well bc there's SOOO much drarry out there. there's truly something for everyone, and i don't think i've ever met two people with the same favorite fic? we all sorta read the same things here and there but there's so much variety that everyone really finds their corner and vibes there.
