âTwenty dollars right now, all yours, no strings attached,â Sol states, holding up the twenty he spoke of, before adding one string adjacent caveat, âIf you can guess the weirdest cause of a fire Iâve ever uncovered. One guess maximum. Go.â
âHmm...â Maia furrowed her eyebrows together and pursed her lips as she contemplated the most outlandish cause of a fire possible. After deliberating for a few moments, she sat up higher in her barstool and launched into the imaginative tale sheâd thought up. âAlright. Iâve got it. A dog jumped onto a kitchen counter, accidentally turned on the toaster, which then eventually caused a fire somehow. Possibly with some kitchen towels?â

âI mean it was kind of a win win for me. I donât know if youâve noticed but dogs, they are so much easier to deal with than dogs. More enjoyable too, so when I stumbled into all of this I just kind of knew it was the right fit. Plus it really catered to that no self control thing,â He joked shaking his head. It was probably insane to someone looking in on it but Austin was happy, he had a good life, and to him this was all he needed. Watching as she noticed the sleeping puppy her reaction brought the biggest smile to Austinâs face. This was the kind of thing he lives for, seeing just how happy a dog could make someone. âThere is a lot more where that came from. Although that one is particular is a bit of a chewer, I imagine its gonna be a big fan of shoes.â Austin warned with a knowing smile.Â
Maia smiled fondly as Austin spoke about his love for dogs. âItâs good you found your true calling, especially one youâre so passionate about. Most never do,â she commented. Luckily, she could say the same for herself when it came to her writing; not only was she able to pursue a career doing what she loved, but she was also able to make a good enough living from it as well. Maia looked back down at the puppy, who was sleeping soundly in the pen. âIf thatâs the case, it deserves all the shoes in the world. Those puppy dog eyes could literally convince me to give it anything.â With one last look at the dozing puppy, she focused her gaze back to Austin and offered him a smile. âI should probably tear myself away from these cuties now before I leave here with all of them.âÂ

âIâll ask first,â he says, nodding before taking a moment to think. âAlright â whatâs your favorite memory? Like, all time. You think âbout it and you canât help but smile.â
âOh, thatâs easy,â Maia replied with a smile, and placed her drink down before she continued. âItâs not really one memory, actually. When I was in elementary school, my father used to pick me up on Fridayâs and walk me to the closest park. Weâd feed the ducks with the stale bread from that week and spend an hour or so there. Of course, we eventually found out that bread isnât good to feed to ducks, but we loved our routine, so we switched to feeding them oats or leftover lettuce. I think thatâs how I got conditioned to love Fridayâs so much.â Maia said with a light chuckle. âAlright, my turn. What hobby did you have as a kid?â
dixieschafferâ:
âDonât get me wrong, I still love Romeo and Julie, I just donât think that itâs top tier level of romance,â she shrugged, âand if weâre talking about Shakespeareâs romance, A Midsummer Nightâs Dream has to be the top.â
âMidsummer is okay,â Maia conceded with a light shrug. âBut Iâm reluctant to call it top. To me, falling in love shouldnât require the use of magic. Itâs a delightful play, but that aspect of it isnât my favorite.â
rory-reillyâ:
âI mean, Iâll admit I havenât had many bosses in the world, but I can tell you with certainty that Nash Gordon is the best of âem. Heâs a real pal, and a real role model. Iâm lucky.â He glared over at her, but it was only in jest. âI canât help it that Iâm so pale! Youâd think with all this heat Iâd come out with a nice tan⊠but nah. This skin wasnât made for the sun.â
âI think the heat can be overrated, anyway,â Maia replied. âPersonally, Iâm more of a fan of the winter months. The best holidays are then, and the climate is much nicer for staying indoors with comfy blankets and hot drinks. Snow and rain are by far the best types of weather.âÂ
eddiexmillerâ:
âI tend to work on more commercial work. I do a lot of retail and entertainment complexes so they tend to be pretty extensive projects. Hence while Iâm here for three months initially although I will no doubt have to come and check up on things a few more times too.â Eddie took a final drink of his beer, âWould you like another drink?â
âAh, I see,â Maia commented with a nod. âThough, three months is quite a long time to be away for. Do you have to travel often for projects? Or do you try to stay in Chicago as much as you can?â At his question, Maia looked down at her glass, which was a couple sips from being empty. âIâd love one. I think Iâll go for a beer this time around.â
leosadlasâ:
âah, really? i remember hearinâ about some of my colleagues from university out drinkinâ with some of our professors.â leo chuckles. âwasnât me though.â
âI couldnât ever - not when just emailing one of my professors made me anxious enough. Though, I will admit, there were some that I felt wouldâve been excellent friends. They always tended to be from the humanities department, interestingly enough.âÂ
catherinexbristolâ:
âThe hydrageas,â she answered, picking a stem up. âI cannot tell you the many times my family has stopped at the dinner table and smelled the roses. Iâve brought them home so many times that theyâd expected it.â Catherineâs smile started to light up as she thought about the times sheâd seen her family stop and smell the flowers each time she comes home with some.Â
Maia nodded at her judgment with a smile. âThen, I think Iâll go with the hydrangeas. Iâm not one to question an expert opinion,â she replied. She looked back down at the flowers and began to focus on the hydrangeas specifically to see which bundle she liked the most. âI have a pretty neutral dining room at the moment,â she commented, and tore her gaze from the flowers to look at her. âMostly white with some darker accents here and there. Iâm not sure if thatâs enough to go off of, but is there any particular color thatâd go well with my space?â
harrisonforresterâ:
âI bet you were the worst. I just guarantee it.â He shrugged, tapping the bookshelf as he tried to think. âGod, 18 years? Iâm really getting old. Been too long.â
âOld sounds a bit harsh. Experienced sounds a lot better. 18 years is quite a long time, though I think it shows dedication moreso than anything else.â Maia commented, and tilted her head as she asked, âHave you ever thought of doing something else?â

Listening to her list the different places around New York to try out. It did cause his stomach to rumble a little, he chuckled at that and placed a hand over it as a way to prevent it from happening again. âAll those places sound amazing. I am gonna make sure to try them out if I ever end up gong to NYCâ
Maia chuckled softly at the sound of his stomach grumbling. âDonât worry, just the thought of those places is making me hungry, too,â she replied. âIâm just glad I havenât had any specific cravings for them yet, especially since itâs a good 1,000 mile trip from here. If you do try them and love them, then youâre welcome in advanced. If you hate it, though, I didnât say anything.â
gidasterâ:
âIf you ask me, sheâs got plenty of names,â Gideon said. Names such as⊠Head Bitch, Miss Attitude, and Deviant Little Shit were all included. However, that was probably not what she was really asking for. âHer name, for when she is being less rude, is Hera.â
Maia raised an eyebrow and smiled at the name. âHera? Thatâs a lovely name for a chicken. Did you name her after the Greek Goddess for any particular reason?â
