Jane’s smile was bright as a star’s light at the sight of Ellen. Ellen had taken care of her and her brother most of their lives - especially when they were rebellious children. Jane loved her like she was her mother. The young woman went to hug the older maid. “And I miss you.” she hummed. “But I’ll still be around the home - especially now.” Michael’s wife passing was still fresh on her brother’s mind and her niece and nephews. “How are you, Ellen?” she asked, gesturing to the flat.

It was a modest thing. One bedroom flat with a small dining room and parlor. She was lucky she had the place. Mother and Father helped her get it years ago - primarily with Mother‘s aid. She wanted to be independent - frankly, Mrs. Banks supported that more than her father did.

          things at the banks home  were darker than they had been in a long time.  the passing of michael’s wife had hit them all hard, and ellen truly felt for the family.  it was going to be such a struggle to make it with the way the world was now.  ❛ they need that support more than ever.  those children are already trying to fill the roles which their mother played. ❜  they’re only kids, they shouldn’t have to be so grown up.  but they want to help their father, and nothing will deter them.

          ❛ i’m just getting by you know.  doing what i can at home.  though michael seems to insist on doing a lot of the work himself...  can’t imagine why. ❜

      ❝    hey ,  ellen ,  everything  alright  there ?    ❞   carefully ,  the woman questions ,  placing her purse on the couch while making her way towards the kitchen .  the scene she came into was funny ,  to say the very least .  ellen wasn’t the most skilled maid ,  some could say ,  but tammy still couldn’t think of a better person to take care of things while she was gone .  above all ,  she trusted the woman ,  and that was the greatest point of it all .    ❝    why  don’t  you …  why  don’t  you  sit  a  little ,  hmm ?   i  could  really  use  a  little  tea  right  now ,  so …  maybe  i  can  prepare  you  some ,   too ?    ❞    and that would also get the lady away from her plates ,  which was a decisive point of her night’s end .    ❝    please  don’t  leave  me  alone ?!   i’ll  end  up  having  wine  instead ,   y’know .    ❞

         if there was one thing  ellen was skilled at, it was taking care of children.  one really should think she should’ve been a nanny instead of a maid, but why hire a nanny when you can hire a teenager for half the pay, right ?  so maid work is where she’d went.  she was good at it, at a time anyway.  when she was younger, but as she got older her mind was starting to slip, not as sharp as it once was.  she tried though and that’s what counted.

          ❛ oh blimey. ❜  she utters as a plate slips from her grasp.  no where near as strong as it used to be.  she steps down from the step-ladder, off to get the broom when tammy’s voice sounds in the kitchen.  ❛ good evening ma’am.  it’s all alright, don’t you worry.  just a little slip of the hand is all.  kids are all up in bed sleeping, got them to bed at eight you see.  one story and they were out like lights. ❜  she’s sweeping the bits of broken china into the dustpan when the suggestion is made.  ellen could make the tea, but tammy seemed rather insistent on getting her to sit down.  ❛ alright alright, if you insist ma’am. ❜

          ❛ couldn’t have said it better myself. ❜  a warm drink always did soothe the nerves.  that or a stiff drink, but something tells her that wasn’t the mary poppins way.  ❛ you didn’t have to do all this, i could’ve done it myself.  thats my job isn’t it ?  wouldn’t have been no trouble. ❜

                 a  smile  does  find  it’s  way  to  his  lips  in  spite  of  himself  .  even  in  the  gentlest  of  words  ,  she  knew  how  to  make  him  smile  .  he  was  more  than  grateful  to  still  have  her  as  a  part  of  this  household  .   he  only  wished  that  this  household  would  remain  a  part  of  them         that  responsibility  now  rested  atop  his  shoulders  .  ❛  forgive  me  ,  ❜  he  murmurs  in  return  ,  doing  his  best  to  smooth  the  furrow  between  his  brows  that  leaves  lines  upon  his  forehead  .  she  was  right  .   ❛  it’s  just  so  hard  to  find  something  you  haven’t  misplaced  . ❜  it  was  maddening  ,  truly  .    

          it was hard  on the banks family.  times were tough, money even more so.  everything seemed to be going wrong in this house, only making matters worse.  she understood the worry that they all face, she worries too.  but no good can come from moping about.  ❛ i’m sure you’ll find it michael.  and even if you don’t, you’ve still got the kids.  family is the most important thing, right ? ❜
