Mai listen as Katara speak amber eyes flickering towards the palace grounds she watch as a family of turtle ducks slowly make their way to the pond the mother nudging her young in.

“I’m- I’m not the maternal type…no one would ever say I am.” She sigh turning her attention back to Katara “but thank you…. It’s different having you, Aang and everyone else so involved.” She’s silent for a moment analyzing her words and thinking things through before she speak “there’s another reason why I asked you to come…. It was Zuko’s idea and you can say no, I’m well aware flying from here to the water tribe can be a drag.” Her lips form an almost smile.

“Would you help deliver the baby…. Things are still tense with zuko taking the role as fire lord and there are vipers here still in the palace but he’s playing a long game he wants to weed them out slowly once he’s learned everything about them and his fathers relationship with them…. We’d both feel better if the person who delivers our child, is someone we both trust.

She watch him analyzing him for a moment about to question if he was alright after all he’s been thrown a literal flaming ship wreck as his birthright. While he continues to speak a snort leaves her unironically “you could always get rid of the old timers, I mean the future is made by the young, but I won’t push on that I know why you keep them.” She hold her hands up placating.

I wanted to spend time with you— that’s not a crime is it?

At the words she drops her suspicions zuko was transparent open at least with her there was never a play or ploy in his sleeve.

She nods “sorry, I just- you worry about the nation, the people, your family. I worry about you.”

That was the thing about Mai. She didn’t wrap concern in pretty words or dramatic gestures. It came out blunt, offhand, almost like a confession she didn’t mean to say out loud. But Zuko heard it, and it landed deeper than she probably realized. He looked at her then, really looked at her. The way the afternoon sun lit up the subtle gold in her eyes, the steady calm she carried even when she was teasing him about overthrowing the council, like she’d be right beside him if he ever actually did.

“I know,” he said quietly, his voice gentler than usual. “And I’m glad you do.”

For a moment, the weight of the Fire Nation, the throne, the history, and the expectations felt a little lighter. Like she was helping him hold it up just by standing there.

He shifted closer, gaze softening. “I don’t say it enough. But you’re... everything I come back to.” Then, in true Zuko fashion, his brows furrowed. “And for the record, I’ve considered getting rid of the old timers. But apparently, exile isn’t a sustainable leadership policy.”

She fights back the urge to laugh lips quirking in an almost smile as she shake her head “right, right sustainable leadership polices and totally not you wanting to avoid a judgmental look from Aang.” Her voice teasing as she shake her head.

“I’m not saying off them now, just slowly add on people You actually trust and like and remove them systematically your father had bad company because he wasn’t a decent person vipers dance with vipers all that.” She shrug knowing he’d understand what she meant as they continued walking.

“I expect a fruit tart after this as payment for my council.” She watch him from the corner of her eye noting his expressions before adding seriously “you do know you can tell me anything right zuko?”
