Greener pastures

I have some news! Over the last few months Matt and I decided that Are You Alone? would be the last Majical Cloudz record, and that after doing some touring we would be moving on to other projects and adventures.

Matt and I played our first show together in March 2012. At that time the project was just a few songs and some inspirations. As of March 2016 we have released 2 LPs, 2 EPs and toured all over the place. Doing all these things made real what had been a dream for both us, and so the band was an opportunity for us to grow into the kinds of people and the kinds of artists we wanted to become. We both feel it to be the completion of something very positive.

So thank you very much to everyone who has taken interest in the project, listened to the music, bought the records, come to the shows, etc, to everyone who believed in us, gave us a chance, worked with us!

I will be releasing music and playing shows under my own name, Devon Welsh. I’m working on things right now that I’m excited about and that I’ll be releasing online throughout the year and probably playing a bit live here and there. If you’re interested, find me online or come to a show!

Matt will be making music under his new project, The Dahlia, which he'll be sharing with the world soon enough. At the moment, he's composing a film soundtrack and producing a couple of records which you'll be hearing about in the next few months!

We put together this “EP” of songs that we recorded when we were working on “Are You Alone?”, but which didn’t fit on that album for one reason or another. They aren’t more recent than the songs on AYA — they date from different periods of time, one of them is among the earliest songs written for AYA and others are more recent. Despite the fact that it’s a collection of songs that didn’t make the record, I think there is a feeling that links them all together (which is maybe why they didn’t fit on AYA). We hope you enjoy these songs!

We are going on tour in North America and then in Australia in January and February. These are the only dates we have planned right now, so if you want to see us, definitely try to come out to one of these shows. I know some of them are sold out. We tried to move the show into bigger venues where we could (and we did in Vancouver) but in some cases we couldn’t make it happen. So sorry if the show is sold out and you wanted to come.

She-Devils are going to be supporting us on all our shows in North America, which is really exciting. They are really good, so if you’re coming to the shows make sure to come early enough to see them.

It will be our first time in Australia, and it’s difficult to imagine the next time I will be back there (through music or not) so if you’re in Australia and are into our band, this is the time to see us!

We filmed performances of a couple of songs prior to our album release show at National Sawdust in New York in October. This is a live version of 'Game Show'.

The song was one of the earliest ones from Are You Alone? and went through a few different phases. The lyrics were quite different initially. Emotionally it's not like the rest of the songs on AYA but the song is one of our personal favorites.

This is a video I made with my friends Maya and Chris when I was in Toronto for NXNE. They asked me to talk about my influences/inspirations so I talked a bit about Andy Kaufman and Chris Burden!

So yes indeed, today is the day our album “Are You Alone?” comes out!

The title song, “Are You Alone?” was written during the winter prior to the release of Impersonator. The rest of the songs were written in periods spread between Spring 2013 and early 2015, in Uxbridge, Montreal, and Detroit.

Matt and myself worked on many different songs, and the ones that ended up on the album are our favourites. Some of the ones we didn’t choose are also interesting and hopefully we will get them out there somehow relatively soon!

If you listened to any of these songs when they were works-in-progress, thank you! The memories I have associated with the composition of these songs are too numerous and personal to name, but thanks to my friends for supporting that process and for being sources of encouragement.

Also very big thank you to everyone who has ever come to one of our shows or listened to our music. The project “Majical Cloudz” began with intentions that have been greatly exceeded, and it’s fun to let go of the music and watch it take on another life in the hands of everyone who listens to it.

We will be playing some shows following the release of “Are You Alone?”, and I think they will be really fun! If you live in one of the cities in which we are playing and you’re reading this, you should come!
