The scene where Azriel found out that Elain is a Seer is one of the biggest Elriel foreshadowing scenes.

It’s the way how sjm CHOSE to write this scene. The wording here is intentional. She had SO MANY options to write this scene.

Let’s look at some possible options how sjm could have written the scene:

Option 1:

—> Madja never says that a mate can find out whats wrong with Elain

—> She simply tells everyone to keep an eye on her until they eventually find out

—> Lucien is the one who finds out Elain is a seer

—> Not in the book

Option 2:

—> Madja never says that a mate can find out whats wrong with Elain

—> She simply tells everyone to keep an eye on her until they eventually find out

—> Azriel finds out Elain is a seer

—> Not in the book

Option 3:

—> Madja says a mate can find out what’s wrong with Elain

—> Lucien finds out Elain a seer

—> Not in the book

Option 4:

—> Madja says a mate can find out whats wrong with Elain

—> Azriel finds out Elain a seer

—> THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS IN THE BOOK

Sjm could have easily emphasize the importance of a mating bond by having Lucien discover Elains seer powers after Madja states that a mate could figure out what’s wrong. That would have directly supported the idea that mates are always the right choice.

But instead sjm decided to write the exact opposite.

Madja says a mate can figure out what’s wrong and then it’s Azriel instead of Lucien who understands what’s happening with Elain.

That wasn’t a random writing choice.

IT. WAS. INTENTIONAL

meanwhile what it actually has been the entire time is “elriel is endgame.”

This scene is so unnecessary for a non romantic pairing. And 4 characters being included here…I’ll never be normal about them 😫

if some elriels haven’t read it before, i recommend you guys to read the tharion bonus chapter from crescent city in which he has an interaction with a woman named hypaxia. it is eerily similar to the second part of azriel’s bonus. and spoiler alert: tharion and hypaxia do not end up together nor does their relationship develop romantically in any way or form.

to read the BC you can search up “tharion: HOSAB bonus chapter - erosophony” and read it on that page (i am reluctant to leave a link because i know some people don’t want to click on those).

also i found a reddit post dissecting it called:

“GA is less compelling as a ship when you consider the Tharion and Hypaxia bonus chapter.”

they did an amazing job so i will just post their analysis here:

in my opinion, the only questionable take here is thinking that gwyn and azriel were being romantic. as i firmly stand on, there was no romance there and her lightsinger powers, which were already hinted at in ACOSF, were at work.

and let us all remember: not every interaction is romantic 🫡 and bonus chapers are to be taken with a grain of salt, not regarded as the holy bible.
