I was listening to this editor who said that the hallmark of an amateur and immature writer is their reluctance to put their characters in a lot of conflict. Because there isn't enough in them by way of being able to resolve said conflict well in the book, due to lack of experience, and because they are terrified of judgement, they tend to not put their characters in situations which could be viewed as objectionable. Therefore, whatever conflict there is, it's simple, easily resolved, and lacks in any gravitas.

Which made me think of Gwynriels. We always say that Gwynriels have no imagination. And that their main 'plot' is some non-existent Illyrian conflict which really has no impact on either Gwyn (especially Gwyn) and even Azriel (because he always has an 'escape route' back to the NC if things go sideways). And the rest of the 'plot' is 'training, House of Wind Gang, and gently falling in love, with Azriel being careful, kind, loving and protective. No conflict. No barriers. No obstacles.

Furthermore, the negating of Nesta's story and the transfer of attention to the unproblematic Gwyn, is another tell. Much easier to deal with Gwyn and fantasize about her, than the complicated, complex, sharp, aching, angry, hurtful and hurting Nesta.

And I think that this is another example,e of not really understanding how ans what SJM writes.

She LOVES putting her characters in extreme conflict.. Internal. External. Endless. Painful. Violent. Conflict. Her characters are tortured physically and emotionally, psychologically and romantically. And it never stops with one torture. It just keeps going. SJM is certainly not an amateur writer. And though she likes her HEA, her characters go through hell.

I am honestly not sure if Gwynriels are even prepared to read about Gwyn going through her. Gwyn making difficult decisions. Gwyn not being her perfect selfless self. Gwyn being in conflict.

I was again reminded that Gwynriel is a work of pure fantasy and headcanons. Nothing about it screams 'this is how SJM writes'.

I think Lucien giving Elain those magical gloves just made the mating bond worse in elains mind because above all else she wants someone who truly sees her and that proved he doesn’t pay attention and he doesn’t know her.

Azriel didn’t have to have a thousand conversations with Elain to be able to see her and understand her and thats seems to be an important component to Elain.

All Elain wants for someone to look deeper than her pretty face. To see the real her. Her character.

Her mother? Only saw her pretty face and how to use it

The young girls from her childhood? They saw her pretty face and hated her because of it.

Graysen? Even tho he was with her the minute she turned to fae it all vanished. He could only see "what" she is rather than "who" she is.

Lucien? It goes the same way. He simply doesnt care about "who" Elain is as a person but "what" she is to him—mate. So he is only doing what a mate should...not someone who is interested in Elain should. And Elain notices that.

Azriel on the other hand...he listens to her. He sees her. He understand her. This is literally the most important part of it. To see deeper than the pretty face or what she is. Azriel understand who she is as a person and doesnt judge her for it or act according to please it. As Feyre said in acowar:

It made sense, I supposed, that Azriel alone had listened to her. The male who heard things others could not … Perhaps he, too, had suffered as Elain had before he understood what gift he possessed.

This is about more than just powers. This is about how they get each other. How Azriel gets her and understands her.
