“Oh god I totally understand that. I moved to the US at 18 and was so disappointed! That kid though is my hero.”

“I mean there are probably other ways for him to get it but he is only 15. She might just be paranoid, I don’t recall ever being interested in alcohol until I hit 17.”

“Oooh mister bad boy!” she teased and smirked. Placing a hand over her chest, she shook her head. “Oh that would be horrible though. So your secret is with me to the grave” she assured him and winked.

“I have no idea who she is, other than the fact that her name is Penelope and she has a 15 year old grandson. She also blames the gays for her grandsons sudden turn to alcoholism. Sweetheart is living in the wrong town if she’s thinking like that.”

Leaning against the table as she listened to him talk, she slowly nodded. “Riveting” she said and smiled. “Alcohol is overrated anyway. Yes, sure it tastes amazing from time to time. But it’s overrated” she added.

“I prefer other, less legal highs.” He told her in all honesty and gave the girl a smile. “Although if I ever told the grandmother on the other end of the phone call that I think she might have died of a heart attack.”

“It’s a fucking stupid law, that’s for sure. What, when you turn 18 you can buy cigarettes and a gun and watch porn but you still can’t drink? It’s ridiculous. But that is…an interesting plan. I don’t think I ever would have thought of that. I do know some guys who did it in hotels, though. Like, drank the bottled water and then filled it back up with tap.”

“The fact that some people can get away with that shit is crazy. I was never that sneaky, I think I lost all of that as soon as I hit 18 - it was like I got clumsy all of a sudden. Or I just got too damn big.”

“Stealing liquor from an actual liquor cabinet? That is the bougiest thing I’ve heard in my whole life. Like when I was fifteen, I was trying to sneak beers out of the fridge and hoping my dad wouldn’t notice ‘cause he drinks a couple every night anyways, not stealing aged whiskey from a crystal decanter or whatever. But hey, it’s all about life experiences, yeah? The legal age here is a whole other thing, but it’s pretty easy to find someone to buy your liquor. You would have no problem with a face like that.”

“What can I say? Everwood Radio gets some damn fancy listeners.” Major joked, “I thought all grandparents had liquor cabinets? Except I always assumed it was usually filled with sherry and that one bottle of red wine all grandparents have and never open.” He pushed his hands into his pockets and stood there with a slightly amused grin on his lips. “Good job I’m 24 then and don’t need to worry about roping someone into doing it for me.”

“I think I must have just had a lot of older friends when I was that age. It helped living in a college town. My parents were kind of New Jersey old folks, though, you know? I was allowed to have wine with dinner. Where are you from?” 

“My parents let me, most of the time. We are from New Zealand so they still stuck by our old laws for a while, with my younger sister they were a lot stiffer with the house rules.” Major gnawed on his bottom lip a little before smiling. “Poor girl didn’t know what hit her.”

“You know, there are ways to drink alcohol here before you’re 21 that don’t involve stealing from your grandmother.  With a face like yours, I know of several bartenders who’d still serve you.”

“I’ll have you on the show next time, you can help the kid out.” Major joked before raising an eyebrow at the mans next comment. “Really? Well, it’s a shame that I’m of age now and can’t take advantage of that.”

“You know what’s really weird about that situation? I’ve heard stories about parents who have filled their alcohol bottles with water so it looks like they didn’t drink so much.. Can’t trust the teenagers just as much as you can even trust the adults.” He said to the male as he shook his head slowly. “That had to absolutely suck, but I just drank illegally until I was twenty-one.”

“I suppose you do have to set a certain standard when you’re a parent. It’s just one of those life lessons - I think if parents didn’t make such a song and dance about it being taboo then we would never have been so interested.” Major suggested with a slight shrug of a shoulder. “I mean, of course I drank illegally but I was expecting to be able to get out and go to bars with my own ID by the age of 18. My parents didn’t care, they brought alcohol for me.”

“We had a caller in today that is convinced her  15 year old grandson is stealing alcohol from her cabinet and topping it up with water. Kudos to the kid, I was not that smart at that age. Which sucks since I grew up expecting to be able to drink alcohol by the age of 18 but then my parents surprised me with this lovely move to the US and I had to wait a few more years.”
