The Truth of the Youkai
"Youkai in general are a quickly disappearing species... humans don't believe in us anymore... or are afraid to recognize we exist... its like the story about how fairies come to be, that...baby's first laugh and everything... only for us?
I think a human writer named Shakespeare said it best.
'Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air; And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud capped towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve, And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life Is rounded with a sleep.'
... in short? Youkai... Yomi... Gods... we all exist through the belief of others... when humans stop being afraid, or stop 'seeing' or 'believing in us'...we stop existing... we begin to fade...die... some Youkai, the Yomi, are far more violent about that fact than the rest... they want people to see us... fear us...remember us... because they don't want to simply cease to be... so they influence fears...nightmares...while others influence imagination and dreams.
There are two sides to every coin...on the one hand...
I can see and understand what Xiaoyin was trying to do... by forcing me into his will, he would have had leverage over my grandfather to make things happen the way he wanted, to force mortals and humans to see us, know us, and remember... on the other?
My grandfather has fought for us to exist /peacefully/ alongside the mortals that don't remember... he's watched them bloom and evolve, and with the passage of time and wisdom, they become more creative and create even more fantastical creatures of their own accord, this imagination and creative spark is what keeps us living... not thriving as much as we might have ages ago... but... we're still living.
Xiaoyin wanted power...influence... my grandfather wanted peace... and prosperity.
Its what caused the war in my home... one that still lingers."
