Hello!

Welcome to MakeMiskates, a blog for all the things that Kate makes!

I'm just your average hobbyist who likes trying out creative things. I go where my whims take me, so it's going to be a wide variety of crafts. Some will be older, going as far back as 2010! And others are what I'm working on lately. So if you enjoy following people's artistic journeys, or if you're just curious what a fellow tumblr user gets up to in their spare time, give me a follow! <3

[makemiskates]

Well, normally I would post a little craft or decor project at this time, but guess what? I don't really have anything to show! I'm sure there are many from way back that I haven't dug up, but I've actually covered all the images I readily have access to.

And lately I haven't been doing as many of these kinds of projects. Most of this year has been running a fan zine, and now I'm about to get started on some halloween costumes. So all my creative energy is going to that and not they kinds of things I would share here.

So that means I'll be going on hiatus for a bit. If I get my external hard drive and go through it, I'm sure I can get more posts going. And of course I'll be making more little art things in the future. But until then, I hope everyone has a nice fall. Thank you for following along with all the things that I've made, and I'll see you when I see you.

This was done before I had the cricut, so everything was cut by hand. I wanted to leave a shelf in the little green closet I had decorated, but felt like it didn't look the coolest. So to just give it something extra, I put these cut-outs between two pieces of shelf lining so that even when the shelf is full, I can see some cute little flower shapes.

January, 2021

I've since moved into a different room, but this flower and vine arch is still there even if all the other stuff isn't. It was surprisingly easy to put this up. It was a pack of fake wisteria and little sticky wall hooks. Wired them together and that was kind of it! I know fake flowers can get very dusty, and no I don't clean this basically ever. But idc. I love it.

Not an actual craft project, but I did spend a lot of time painting with colors! I have a decent number of topper polishes and I can never remember what they look like on top of the other colors I have, so this was the solution. Each one has matte coat on the bottom half too.

There was a while where I really wanted to customize my light fixture but not do anything so invasive or permanent that it was going to potentially be a problem. So I came up with this. It's lace on a low gauge wire for each petal, and all were attached to a hoop that rests on the light shades. Not sure how safe it is as far as maybe getting to hot? But it looks cute and I've never had any issues with it. I think another layer of a different color lace with slightly smaller petals would be a nice add.

This one was a very small wood project borne out of necessity. I wanted a place to rest my phone so I could easily watch and charge it, but it was in a little room (closet) that didn't have tables or really any furniture to speak of. So I designed this to hold a pop socket, and the inner part could hold the remote for the fairy lights in the room. I've since taken this down because the room is used for something else now, but it sure was handy when I needed it!

I drew this sticker waaaaaaaaaaay back. It was one of several that I did before going to my first con, which I made to give out to people. In the end I was too shy to go up to hardly anyone, so most of the stickers came home with me. I found them the other day, and had just bought some holographic sheets, so gave this one a little update.

I had this fabric forever. Like decades. As we entered the pandemic in 2020, I started looking for projects to fill my time at home, so I pulled these out and finally made something with them. It's super cute, and I actually don't know why I don't wear this more?

March 2020

[makemiskates]

This one's another rubber stamp I carved based on a comic book character. In fact, the design here is taken directly from a panel of the current New Gods run. It was such a memorable moment! I've used the stamp to make some bookmarks, though in the end I wasn't as pleased with the quality of the metal. And I did make myself a bottle opener.

When we moved to the house we got an electric mower, but wanted to protect the electronics from the elements. So I made a little box for it to sit in, and figured I might as well decorate it a bit. This was several years ago now, so the plies on the box have started to peel and darken, so it may be time to make a new one soon.

I made this as a gift for my mom. I think it turned out so lovely, if I do say so myself! The pieces were all cut using a jigsaw, and then hand painted, which I remember taking a long time to blend everything smoothly on the wood. The second image shows better that it's meant to be a little holder of some kind. My mom ended up hanging on the back patio and keeps a remote for the outdoor fan there!

I really haven't been doing much creatively lately, but I was tinkering with the idea of making sublimated keychains. Here's a prototype I did with markers or a comic book inspired galaxy. It turned out okay, but I with the markers blended better. I think that's kind of my biggest complaint with how I've been doing sublimation. But I've got some other methods to experiment with that maybe you'll see in the future. For this one, I also added a glitter layer that flashes different little stars in the light!

Before I made the patches I posted not long ago, I did this as a first prototype. I wanted to mail it to someone in Europe to get a good feel for price, time, and shipping quality if I used regular post. It took about three and a half weeks if I recall, but it made it! Interestingly, another item I sent at the same time to the same address took only like two weeks. Anyway, this is Guy Gardner, a Green Lantern from Earth, and what better time to share this than right after the Superman movies is out!

This was a very special one that I made for a dear friend! It's a plywood shelf of her adorable little dog, Jolene. I had fun painting it and trying to get the blending right on some of the colors. You can't really tell from the photo, but there are lines engraved with a rotary tool. I think painting it kind of made those not stand out as well, but up close you can tell. I hope I did Jolene justice!

I kept seeing pinterest posts of people making baskets by zigzag stitching rope. It looked so easy and in the end created a cool useful thing. And guess what? It was pretty easy!! Getting it started and then ensuring its not stitched loose enough to leave gaps had a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it you could really churn these suckers out. I made this one, which I store ink stamps in, and another larger one that has lotions and skin care stuff in it. And I bought some black rope too, but never made anything with it. Maybe I should bust the sewing machine out and do another basket some time.

More jigsaw and rotary adventures from a few years ago. Our good friends bought a big house, and to commemorate it I made them this little plywood ornament. It's kind of boxy because it's the actual silhouette of their house. And yes, they have a silly last name.
