A full look at my Harry Potter scarf progress. My Aragog and Dumbledore’s Army sections are in the shadow.
Knitting Lament
Recently I bought a Knitter’s Pride circular needle at Hobby Lobby. The packaging says Size 5 with a 32″ cable. It turned out the cable was too long for the hat I was trying to knit. So the needles were just sitting there waiting for a project. I decided I could use it to make a color stranded cowl (loop that you wear around your neck). When I was about on row 10, I was trying to fix four stitches that I’d done in the wrong color, and the needle snapped off.
I checked the time and I knew if I left right away I could get to my local yarn shop and replace the broken needle before the stitches all fell off. Since I didn’t know where the original needle packaging was, I went ahead and measured the broken needle while it was still in the project and got 27″. I could have sworn it was 32″ on the package label. And by the time I got everything together and got to the store right before it closed, I had found the original wrapper and it did indeed say 32″.
Remember this cowl was designed to use the length of that original circular needle. So at the shop the clerk helped me find a size 5 circular needle with a 32″ cable. At the shop I moved the project to the new needle and headed home.
I hope you are still with me.
I stopped at a restaurant and was knitting on the new needles and found out the stitches are very tight on it. So much so that it is slowing me way down trying to constantly get enough slack to knit. I measured both brands of needles and they are both 32″ so I don’t understand why the slack is gone. The other needles had plastic tips so that was a lot of drag. I thought with the metal tips I’d be able to go so much faster and I’m so much slower and I’m so frustrated. If I end up publishing this pattern, I’m going to switch to a 30″ cable but at this point I don’t want to spend yet another $11. on another cable. And the whole thing has distracted me from the original hat I was trying to make. I had the wrong sized needles for that one too. I needed a UK size five and got a US size five, so consequently that hat will be a child’s size instead of big enough for my fat head.
