OLD FASHIONED FUDGE
INGREDIENTS:
- 2 CUPS GRANULATED SUGAR
- 4 TABLESPOONS UNSWEETENED COCOA POWDER
- 1 STICK (1/2 CUP) UNSALTED BUTTER
- 1 CAN (5 OUNCES) EVAPORATED MILK
- 1 TEASPOON VANILLA EXTRACT
- 1/2 CUP CHOPPED NUTS (OPTIONAL)
DIRECTIONS:
1. GREASE AN 8-INCH SQUARE PAN AND LINE IT WITH PARCHMENT PAPER FOR EASY REMOVAL.
2. IN A MEDIUM SAUCEPAN, COMBINE THE SUGAR AND COCOA POWDER, STIRRING UNTIL WELL MIXED.
3. ADD THE BUTTER AND EVAPORATED MILK TO THE PAN, STIRRING CONSTANTLY OVER MEDIUM HEAT UNTIL THE BUTTER MELTS AND THE MIXTURE IS SMOOTH.
4. BRING THE MIXTURE TO A BOIL, THEN REDUCE THE HEAT AND LET IT SIMMER FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES, STIRRING FREQUENTLY.
5. REMOVE THE PAN FROM THE HEAT AND STIR IN THE VANILLA EXTRACT.
6. IF USING, ADD THE CHOPPED NUTS AND MIX UNTIL EVENLY DISTRIBUTED.
7. POUR THE FUDGE INTO THE PREPARED PAN, SPREADING IT EVENLY.
8. LET THE FUDGE COOL AT ROOM TEMPERATURE UNTIL SET, ABOUT 1 TO 2 HOURS.
9. ONCE SET, CUT INTO SQUARES AND SERVE.
