becky albertalli has written a coming out article and it breaks my heart that it’s titled “i know i’m late”. there’s no such thing. i hope she (and everyone reading) knows that. there shouldn’t be pressure on anyone, public figure or otherwise, to come out before they’re comfortable.

and maybe it’s a lesson that when it comes to lgbt characters, good rep is good rep, and we can judge that based on the text itself without demanding the author confirms their sexuality for us. maybe we put their privacy before the need to be “unproblematic”.

i’d like to add that this isn’t the first time that an author has been pressured to come out because they were writing gay characters. this happened to ve schwab too. yeah, queer characters written by lgbtq+ people are great! i agree! but we need to stop harassing authors who haven’t clarified their sexualities or come out yet for writing queer couples.
