Creative Critical Reflection Question #4 (Presentation)
For the fourth CCR Question, which is as follows:
How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?
I decided to present my answer in the form of a simple Slides presentation.

Creative Critical Reflection Question #3 (Timeline Visual)
For the third CCR Question, which is as follows:
How did your production skills develop throughout this project?
I decided to present my answer in the form of a timeline visual since the question demands a linear / chronological assessment of how my production skills developed over time.
Attached below is the timeline visual I made and also the text of my answer in its entirety in case it is hard to read (although the picture can be opened and the text easily read by viewing it at full resolution).
How did your production skills develop throughout this project?
WHERE I STARTED:
My ‘production skills’ prior to this project were limited to the random bits of information I had picked up from the internet while working on little passion projects, and all of it was limited to editing only. I had absolutely no experience when it came to the actual production process of a film- I had never tried my hand at filmmaking before, so doing camerawork was a total mystery to me. So this is how I went into the Media Studies course: armed only with my passable knowledge of editing and nothing else.
RESOLUTION & COLLABORATION:
Because of this, there was a lot to be learnt if we were to successfully pull off making this film opening. As such, I made sure to plan out everything we had to do in advance and to become familiar with the idea of researching anything I didn’t know about.
Since this was a team project, it was really important to us all that we include each other in every decision. Therefore, I was always vocal with my ideas and made efforts to listen to group members’ perspectives as well- in this way, we could generate ideas and collaborate better overall.
LEARNING:
Most of the skills required for filmmaking, we learned in class- including but not limited to editing, camerawork (shots and compositions), how to set the scene, and about sound and lighting. We also learned about production workflow and very soon had to put the processes into action for our film opening.
PRODUCTION PROCESSES:
We started off with genre and audience research through a questionnaire, as explained above. Then, we went through all the processes of production one by one: location scouting, casting, script writing, budgeting, and deciding on props. Finally, we moved on to actually shooting the film and then editing it, both of which came with their own sets of difficulties and learning experiences. The process of us doing all of these things is explained in more detail in my blog.
EDITING:
I was the one who edited the whole film opening; we’d decided that I’d do it alone. That meant lots of hours of scouring the internet for tutorials on how to do this one specific thing I wanted to and google searches about where to find the button or tab I needed in the Filmora software. I was actually really grateful for my small ‘experience’ with editing from before during this process since my learning curve was thankfully not as steep as it could’ve been.
TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES:
Editing truly felt like an endless path to walk on, and there were technical difficulties as well. For example, I ended up exporting the film around 4 or 5 times one day because for some reason, my PC refused to cooperate with my video editing software and the final film would have weird black frames and jumps in it. I simply had to keep re-exporting until I got a satisfactory export, and this was all just to fix one technical problem!
NEW CHALLENGES:
Apart from editing, script writing was something we had never tried before. I used a script writing software for the first time and found it to be quite straightforward- the UI was simple enough that there weren’t any challenges there. For the blog as well, since I am an enthusiast and have maintained multiple blogs since I was very young, I had no trouble and instead quite enjoyed the process of structuring my blog for this project.
CONCLUSION:
Overall, this project helped me develop my production skills immensely. I learned to actually put some of the previous skills I had to practical use (particularly, my editing and blogging skills), and the project also allowed me to gain some new skills and to learn how to do things I had never tried before. It was a very rewarding experience!

DUPLICITOUS | Editing ~ Seemingly-Endless 'Final' Drafts
After showing our first draft to our teacher, there were some (really good) points brought up and so, we decided to re-edit the credits of the film opening.
I settled into my desk again and worked at it. I sent the DUPLICITOUS 2.0 version to our group, and almost immediately, received feedback about such-and-such problems that needed to be fixed. This constant back-and-forth, though admittedly tiring, was necessary to make our film opening something all of us can be satisfied with.
Fabiha and I traded lots of opinions and ideas and were always in contact with each other. Her contribution towards editing was the 'ROADSIDE Entertainment' title which I ended up editing (with her input) to fit into the opening sequence better.
Even now, although I've made and exported roughly 7 versions of the film opening, I can't be perfectly sure that the current version will be the last. However, one thing is clear: there won't be a need for any major changes going forward, so that's great!
This film opening has truly been a labour of love so I'm happy about how it has turned out.

DUPLICITOUS | The First Cut
This is the very first cut of the opening sequence I exported- it's actually embarassing that I put the credits at the end like that; I have no idea what I was thinking, but thankfully, I'm almost done fixing it now.

DUPLICITOUS | Editing
Editing this film opening was... quite an experience. I would basically just sit down at my desk- lamp on, music blasting, and a bottle of water in front of me, and work on the film consecutively for like 6 hours straight.
I know it sounds ridiculous that it would take that long to edit such a short film opening sequence, but I found that when every little aspect of the video has to be chosen carefully and put together in a way that narrates the storyline well, that's just how it works out.
I spent countless hours painstakingly trying to choose fonts for credits and the film title, debated the merits of a warm-toned color grading versus a cool-toned one, rewatched the same five takes like fifty times only to finally settle on the first one i picked out, and listened to so much bubbly background music that my ears felt like they'd fall off.
And now, finally! I'm done with the first draft of the film opening. The feeling of relief that went through me as soon as I began to export the film was basically insurmountable.
I've shared the first cut with the group and already, there are changes they would like for me to make. I will gladly do as they wish, but for tonight, I shall sleep knowing that most of the work is finally behind me!

DUPLICITOUS | 'Editing' Meeting
For the past week or so, there had been some discussion amongst the three of us regarding how we were going to approach editing for our film. So, in order to decide on all the little things we had to before we could start editing the film, we decided to hold a meeting.
Initially, we were supposed to start editing the film together in this meeting, but as it turned out, not much actual editing could happen since there was so much more to figure out than expected.
We decided on lots of little things like a name for our very own production company: ROADSIDE ENTERTAINMENT, we wrote out the credits list that would be edited onto the film opening, and ironed out other miniscule but important details.
I took the sole responsibility of editing the film since I was confident in my editing skills and, admittedly, because I am a bit of a perfectionist and control freak. Thankfully, Fabiha and Khizer are willing to humour me and let me do my thing. I'm going to make sure to keep them in the loop at all time while editing and also to take their opinions and preferences into account during the process.
We ended up choosing Filmora as our editing program of choice since I'm most comfortable with that for now.
It was overall a fruitful meeting and I'm glad we met up today.

DUPLICITOUS | Shoot Day 2
Although we had not planned for our second shoot day to happen almost a month and a half after the first one, this is how it came to be due to the unavailability of our actors and other factors.
Still, we were all very pumped for our second shoot day, especially since the scene we were to film was so crucial to our film opening.
There were a lot of preparations to be done for this shoot, preparations I had to pay extra attention to since we were only actually able to film at the warehouse location courtesy of my father.
I did my best to get all the props we might need ready to be taken to the location, hoping until the end that I didn't forget anything.
We were unfortunately late to start today's shoot as well; since the location was at quite a distance from Fabiha and Khizer's homes, it was understandable, but still unfortunate.
We briefed our actors and started shooting for the scene. This scene actually went through a lot of on-site changes wherein we scrapped some parts of the narrative that we felt didn't fit, and added some shots we felt were needed.
The problem though, was that our tardiness had a visible impact on our shots- the warehouse was not particularly well-lit even with the sun out, but as the sun set, the lighting became absolutely abysmal.
We had to resort to using three or four mobile phone flashlights to light our later shots, something I'm really worried about having to fix in post. My biggest concern right now is that the footage we shot might end up being completely unusable since we don't have the time to reshoot.
Still, the shoot overall was a successful one- only the last few shots we took have the lighting issue; the rest are good. Hopefully, I'll be able to make those last few shots work while editing the film so that we don't have to resort to a reshoot.
Here's to hoping, anyways!

DUPLICITOUS | Script
The first rough draft of what was to become the script for DUPLICITOUS was originally written out on my phone in the notes app. It was from those ramblings that had frantic ideas for shots Fabiha and I wanted to include and the general storyline that our final script was born.
Fabiha and I both formatted the script into a screenwriting software to get our final product. Unfortunately, we were only able to get this done after we had already had our first shoot day, so for that first day, we relied on my rough draft (which wasn't all that different from the final, thankfully).
We went through an edit or two, but the script remained largely unchanged through the process- except for the warehouse / murder scene, which we imagined and hoped to execute quiet differently at first.
Following is the final version of our script, and the one that will hopefully guide us well through our last shoot:

DUPLICITOUS | Shoot Day 1
It's finally happened! The day that had been a long time coming- the one we prepared so extensively for: our first shoot day.
It actually took us a little longer than planned to gather at Fabiha's house due to traffic and other issues, but we did eventually get there and manage to start filming.
As planned, we filmed the kitchen scene first, trying out different angles and discussing how best to film the small dialogue sequence. The kitchen shoot went very smoothly, although it did take us a little longer than expected, which (combined with our already-late start) did not put us in the best position for our shoot at the second location of the day.
After that, we hurried in a race against time to get to the park since daylight was running out quickly. We managed to find a park fit for what we had in mind quite easily, though, so that was a relief.
At the park as well, although we were hurried by how quick the sun seemed to settle into the horizon, the shoot went smoothly. Looking at the shots we took now, I really believe that it was in our best interest that we reached the park a little later than planned; we couldn't have gotten all those gorgeous sunset shots if not for our tardiness.
Finishing off a hard day with ice cream, we all made our way home and that marked the end of our first shoot day!

DUPLICITOUS | Shooting Schedule
Today, we all had a meeting to figure out logistics for our first shoot and work out any kinks in our plans before that. Keeping in mind the availability of our actors, we've settled on December 19th for our first shoot day.
We've only roughly decided on the schedule as of yet, since we don't think that planning everything down to tiny increments is actually going to help too much; giving ourselves enough time to be able to try everything we want was our main priority when deciding ont he schedule.
This is why we chose to shoot the relatively simpler (the kitchen and the park) scenes together on the first day, thus leaving the more complicated and crucial warehouse scene for day two.
So, roughly, our schedule for Day 1 will go like this:
3:00 pm | Gather at the location for the kitchen scene and lightly discuss the plan for the day so everyone (including the actors) is in the loop
3:30 pm | Start filming the kitchen scene
5:15 pm | Finish filming the Kitchen scene and head towards the second location for the park scene
5:45 pm | Start filming the park scene
6:30 pm | Finish filming the park scene in daylight
The planned schedule for Day 2 is similar, but with less moving around:
3:30 pm | Arrive at the warehouse to film
3:45 pm | Brief the actors on the scene we're about to shoot and what is demanded of them
4:15 pm | Start filming the warehouse scene
| Finish before it gets dark
Hopefully, we will be able to carry out the shoot as planned. I'm actually really nervous about the shoots, but here's to hoping for the best!
