While I was studying abroad I was lucky enough to be in towns and cities with lots of open spaces. Hanging out on lawns or streets wasnt taboo because I was a girl. I loved this time on my own, to take a walk, to read, to write, to meet random people by chance.

I missed all that when I moved back to Karachi. As a woman here I have never been encouraged to be alone, or even taught how to be. It isn’t always comfortable but I’ve started reading and writing or just chilling on roadsides, dhabas and similar spaces. I’ve made some new friends this way, gotten rid of old fears, and realised that there is no reason for women to miss out on an essential part of citylife. Our paranoia is self inflicted, in most cases.

This may be part social experiment or what have you, but really, it’s as important to me that I experience a city on my own terms, and to have spaces for creativity and breaks that aren’t out of sight, protected, or prescribed for me by others.
