Final looks for Archy and Mehitabel!
archy and mehitabel
“archy and mehitabel” (alternately titled “Skinbone Alley”) is a 1950s musical adaptation of the story of two fictional characters, Archy the cockroach and Mehitabel the cat, as written in a column in The Evening Sun in the 1910s and 1920s. The story is of Archy’s typewriter chronicles and his love for Mehitabel.
My approach to this musical is set in the 1920s in the underground of a New York newspaper/subway area. The theatre is the size of the Belk (large), and the color schemes are dusty autumn colors, lots of black and white/cream, orange and olive green.
Archy is an earnest, hardworking cockroach who loves to write and loves Mehitabel. He is funny, clever, and suave. Mehitabel is a tease of a cat, and knows how alluring and powerful her powers of flirtation are. They are fully realized anthropomorphic figures, as all but one of the characters in the musical are animals (the narrator is human).
Makeup and hair will help establish the animal details of these characters, as well as establishing character features like Archy’s masculinity or Mehitabel’s sensuality.
As the semester and my morgue book come to an end, here are the final looks on some of my favorite projects. 😊🎭

This is my research board for “the mysterious healer with magical powers in a devised work based on Grimm fairy tales for an urban teen audience in Charlotte.” My concept for the play is a group of high school gamers on a quest based on Grimm fairy tales, and for the mysterious healer I want him to be the online healer of the group and in person a mysterious but alluring teenage guy.
