TRANSASIA TURBOPROP PLUMMETS INTO TAIPEI RIVER

TransAsia Flight GE 235, bound for Kinmen, crashed into the Keelong River in Taipei yesterday morning, barely 3 minutes into its flight. The plane’s last seconds in the air were captured on video by a car’s dashcam as the low flying aircraft suddenly careened towards an elevated freeway and clipped a taxi as it somersaulted into the Keelong River near the Taipei Songshan Airport. As of 9:45 am today there were officially 31 dead, 12 missing, and miraculously, 15 survivors. Out of 53 total passengers, 31 are from the Chinese mainland including three children. Incredibly, the taxi driver and passenger survived the collision with the wing tip of the plane, with the driver sustaining a head injury and concussion, while the passenger escaped with minor injuries.

According to an aviation official, the pilot issued a distress call to the air control tower , ”Mayday, mayday, engine flameout,” seconds before impact. There has been much speculation as to why the plane lost altitude so quickly and took such as dramatic turn, at one point with the wing perpendicular to the road…
