listen anyone who watched prodigal son tonight i'm just gonna say it's not bad per say, it's just different. i think they tried to shove so much shit into the premiere that it backfired on them and adding in the things from the real world was good it's good to see that but the way they didn't just didn't really hit the spot. it was all over the place and it just wasn't cohesive enough for me. there was hardly any Nathaniel Blume compositions and the ones that were there were the basic ones from season one. the other music didn't fit right and the case didn't have enough explanation. malcolm hardly profiled at all and it felt like the actual case was the secondary plot which is fine but it was just too much of a secondary plot to have to focus on that as well as all the other shit happening.
on the other hand if these slight differences were on purpose then i definitely see the point. if we're thinking of the show as a reflection of malcolm's mental state then season 1 was about him trying to overcome the trauma and repressed memories that came from martin right. but the actual show focused on the team and their relationships as well as solving the murderers being bright's only form of escapism. gil said that murderers are his hunt and it's like his obsession to solve them right. but that need strove directly from his fear (also as soon as gil said that my brain went DAISY from the magnus archives but not the point) of becoming like his father. now though, because he's covered up ainsely's kill and used his fathers advice to get away with it. he isn't sure if he's the same person, he doesn't know if he liked it or if it was so tramuazing that his brain is just trying to tell him he liked it out of fear or repression. so in filming the show like they did they showed how bright's mind IS the show. which is actually a very interesting way to do things and i think that that idea would be very fucking (EMO) satisfying . b u t if that was what they were going for it wasn't e n o u g h o f i t. like if you're going to do that then make sure we know that's what's happening and not just give subtext as if we're supposed to understand everything all at once as soon as a ton of information is shoved into our faces (what do you think this is? supernatural?). i also really enjoy the idea that malcolm will become a serial killer because i think that'd be so interesting and perfect but only if they still focus on his mental state and the way he views murders instead of bringing the story into so many subplots that there isn't a main focus at all and that it doesn't have any parallels.
i do honestly think the reason i liked season 1 so much was because each murder had its own character counterpart. because character building is what i enjoy most of a story usually. them giving us a random murder that only probably slightly means anything (but also probably not) wasn't what i was looking for. the parallels switching from murder&character to real world&character didn't feel right to me. like bitch i use this show for escapism i don't need it to remind me of all the shit happening in the world exactly as it's happening. because yes i absolutely love what they're trying to do with jt because it's fantastic that any representation is happening but they could've done it so much better. i think if they'd implicated things before going all in with new storylines it would've made more sense and given us more time to process. and yes love me some subplots i really do but where's my psychological warfare? where's that spark I felt in season one that kept it so interesting because this show was different from everything else i've ever watched or read or seen happen in real life. where's that flame that built all these fascinating characters just to have them playing out a story with no meaning? or meaning that at the very least isn't executed well enough to fit?
yeah ya know, just some thoughts
so we all agree malcolm is an adrenaline junkie right
did gil or the writers forget that jt has a baby ?
my boy (derogatory)
this foray into commentary about police was...not well done. i think it’s important for media to say something!! but gil swooping in and essentially saying “we believe you even though i didnt see this happen” is not what we want to see, even if its in favor of our protagonists. quite frankly not sure how this got past their pr team
why take such a stab at acab huh? you realize the acronym is about the system and not an individual right?
